The first third of this book was amazing. I thought, "I have found another brilliant YA author who is HILARIOUS that I can now Google relentlessly and stalk online!" Really, the beginning of the book was hysterical. I was laughing out loud at least once per page.

Then the book got a lot more laborious for one of two possible reasons. I am still not sure which one it was. Possibility #1 is that the book actually got worse and gradually started to suck more and more until it dwindled to a logical yet unsatisfying ending. Possibility #2 is that I found out the author (real name Jeremy Jackson) is actually a pretentious MFA grad who is married to incomprehensible literary fiction (the kind with no plot and words you've never heard of) who wrote this book for, and I quote, "a relatively easy paycheck."

Screw you, author. I hope your teen fans who genuinely love this book go egg your house so you don't feel tempted to stoop to the level of YA literature again, because obviously it is SO much less worthwhile and valid than your putrid, steaming pyramid of literary dreck.

Desperate for a prom date, Jack Grammar tries his own version of speed dating. It starts off with his awkward conversation with Pamela who seems interested, then weirded out. She turns him down. That’s when Jack’s friends Natalie, Dan, and Percy decide that they should run a personals ad for him in the school newspaper to help him get a date and help him meet new people. He finds out about it the next week when they inform him that 140 girls have responded to his ad. Jack is stunned. How can so many women be interested in him? Soon, girls are calling him, emailing him, running up to him on the street and in the hallways at school trying to get his attention and trying to be his prom dates. His friends weed the responses down to 24 from which he must make his prom date decision. It’s kind of scary at first, then kind of fun, then kind of overwhelming. And Jack doesn’t seem to be getting a whole lot closer to finding his ideal woman. There are a few strong contenders – one “Fancypants” who keeps emailing and IMing him; she’s intriguing and quirky and wise, but she’s not even on the list... There are a lot of surprises in store for Jack, not all of them unpleasant (like kissing lessons). And he does eventually find a date for the prom…but it’s not who you’d expect.

Do any guys really really want to go to prom? I guess it’s possible. But I wonder if it’s really about the dancing or just about the opportunity to hang with their friends or get some action? And this sort of turns into Jack’s desire to find the ideal woman, rather than just a date to prom (it’s the search for THE ONE) which is probably too much to expect for/from a first relationship.

A fun fast read - everything is compressed into this one week of frenetic activity and you’ll get caught up in the energy and moved right along with it. Entertaining and full of silly.

Excerpt:
First off, Jenny Wester. Junior. Cheerleader. Even during summers she spent her time at cheerleading camp. She also liked movies, dancing, hanging out with her friends, and kittens. I told her that in all honesty, I thought those things were pretty fun, too. I asked her what her favorite class was and she asked me to repeat the question.

“Like, which class is the one you look forward to most?” I said.

“Huh,” she said, as if it was something she’d never considered before. She shrugged,
“Math? Is that the right answer?”

“Well, there really isn’t a right or wrong answer per se. I’m just trying to get an idea of what you like, what your favorite things are.”

“Oh! Some of my favorite foods are buffalo wings and French fries.”

“Yum,” I said.

“And pizza!”

“Oh, man, pizza’s great,” I said. “So great.”

“My favorite color is berry.”

“Berry?”

“It’s kind of half purple and half pink. See?”

She showed me her fingernails, which were indeed painted a berry color. “Very fetching,” I said, and as I struggled to figure out how to fill up the remaining 12 minutes in our date, a rubber ball came flying through the air and hit Jenny in the head. It was the kind of ball that didn’t hurt.

“Ow!” she said, looking around for the perpetrator. The kids were milling around together, and it was difficult to tell who had thrown it. Then Jenny said an impressive thing: “Which one of you stupid little snot-nosed brats threw that?”
And thus our date ended.

Jack Grammar has it all: the brain, the humor, the cute look and great friends. Surely getting a girl to prom isn't a big of a deal to him, no? But as it turns out, that is the skill he's lacking of: girls. So with prom's approaching and he's still dateless, his two best friends, Percy and Natalie step in to solve (or meddle in) his problems.

description

It all started out as a joke. They put up an advertisement in the school webpage to find Jack's potential prom partner, and Jack is totally clueless about it! He was furious at first, thinking how the whole school would now laugh in his face at his desperate approach. But when he unexpectedly receives tons of responses, even from girls he doesn't know, he decides to just play along. So the plan is to go on a date with each girl and choose the girl he likes most. But with over a hundred responses, how would he manage??? To make things easier to handle, Percy and Nat narrow the list down to the best and most attractive 24 girls, of whom he would date within 7 days time. Hence, the title.

The dating part is the worst part of the book. They are all so random and boring and repetitive and not fun at all and, oh my god, the girls!! There are just too many of them, I was having a very difficult time remembering who was who, and what's special about them. I may or may not have jotted down their names at one point (I literally did). And with a lot of dates going on, the author gave up on dialogues. The dating part lacks actual conversations but instead goes on with descriptive texts, it feels like reading a text book. Here's an example I made up. It's not from the book, but you'll get what I mean:

"She says her name is Sarah, and then asks me what my name is."

Instead of,
"Hey, I'm Sarah. And you are?"

I mean, please. This thing goes on forever!

Now back to the story. Jack suddenly started to receive emails from a stranger known as FancyPants. She warns him about those girls he dated, that most of them dated him with a motive, and only a few of them are genuinely interested in him. Sure enough, there is a motive but I'm not gonna spill the beans here. But in the end, I liked who he ends up going to the prom with. It's very chivalrous of him.

I had fun reading this book. It was enjoyable and down right funny at times. The dating part was my only complain, so yeah, I'd say I recommend this if you're up for a quick light reading!

"We're very young, aren't we," she said after a while. "We really are. We don't know what's going to happen. Maybe what happened to us this week is like a grain of sand that gets stuck inside an oyster and over time it becomes a pearl. We don't know. Or maybe... maybe..."

"Maybe it's just a grain of sand," I said.

"Maybe," she conceded. "But that's not bad."

"No," I said. "I like sand. Usually."

"Sand is pretty cool," she agreed.

"Yeah," I said.

"Yep."

"Glass is made of sand," I said.

"Sure is."

Jack Grammar reminds me of this guy for some reason:

I cannot simply express how much I love this book. I have read this novel at least - at least - twenty times and still laugh, still have those "aww" moments, still identify with and adore the lead character, Jack Grammar. It's a book about growing up, falling in love, learning life's shitty lessons, and that's just in high school.

The narrative is hilarious! Jack's thoughts are random, some may even call it spastic, but yet still easy to follow. He's funny and dorky in a way that makes you love him all the more. His slightly flighty behavior makes him seem more real. You forget you're reading a book. It's like watching one of your crazy best friends or your even crazier boyfriend jump right into an adventure. He IS the holy trinity of what a girl wants - sweet, funny, attractive. I relate to his character even more because he has this way of doing things that aren't perfect. He says things he doesn't mean and things people don't understand (transgenic forces of springtime!) but you know he does it with a good, somewhat confused heart.

I loved the action and all the memories he shares; I love how open he is with himself, but his social awkwardness that makes you yearn to give him what he wants - his dreams! I like that he gains self-confidence throughout the novel, but it's not suddenly there and overwhelming. Jack takes things slowly and I like that he never knows when to think things through or just jump in. For example, he has his doubts about kissing but nothing about "marrying" Pamela when he finds out she was his kindergarten sweetheart.

As you read along and really get close to the character, you find himself experiencing everything he is and feeling the same way - how stressed out he becomes by everything that's happening. How funny he feels when the relationship with his best friend is put to the test. How completely sideswiped he is to find out the secrets that lie behind the plot of 24/7. You want to hate Kaylee and Natalie; you want him to learn how to love the other girls like Callie, Sarah, and Adrian. You adore him for figuring things out as he goes, even if it takes him a while.

I actually turned this book into a play for my senior production in high school. That's how much I loved this book. I'd recommend it to anyone with a soft spot for cute, awkward guys with a big heart and big dreams.

I think this is the first 1 star rating I have given this year....
The book starts off really good! Until about page 60, then it becomes a repetitive boring mess. It's just a bunch of unrealistic perfect quirky girls going on random dates.

Sorry Reilly - I just couldn't get into this one. There were some twists which prevented this novel from being everything that you would expect, and for that reason it warrants the 2 stars, but I just didn't enjoy myself reading this one. I honestly just felt a little offended the entire time. It read more like an encyclopedia on all the ways that teenage girls are horrible than anything else. Our dashing male lead was fine, I suppose. A bit boring. How many novels have I read about the smart, 6 foot tall Leonardo DiCaprio lookalike with a great personality who for some reason gets ignored by every girl ever? That is generally not how it works in real life. If Jack is as perfect as the novel treats him, there is no reason that he should be struggling to get a date for the prom. Especially in a world where girls are as desperate and prom-obsessed as this novel claims.

I thought this was really really cute. It was very predictable, but I don't care. This was funny and entertaining and so much better than I was expecting it to be. Poor Jack had so much to deal with in the week before prom that I'm surprised he didn;t go crazy. One of the few complaints I have is that NAtalie was a really horrible friend, and I can't stand her character at all. This book was short and sweet and I'll probably read more by this author again.

Do you want to erase the silly things your friends do for you Like posting an ad of you on the internet In addition, I wouldn't like my picture on the internet because It would be a disaster. This books genre is realistic fiction.

This book takes place in the year 2008 at a school. Jack has a dream to go to prom but he doesn't have anyone to take, so his friends post an ad and suddenly it turns into a game to see who will jack take. Then he finally makes the decision that is right for him. Furthermore the conflict of this book is person vs. self because Jack has to decide which girl from the list to take to prom. The theme is relationships because Jack has to go on different dates with different girls to find which one is right for him.

The title 24 girls in 7 days (or 247) relates to the book because there is only 7 days until the prom and in those seven days he has to date 24 girls to see which one would be his future date to the prom. Only four girls can meet Jack a day likewise only 24 girls can be selected. One quote from the main character in the book was that's crazy because he thought the idea of 247 was insane.

I was surprised when all the girls Jack dated knew him when they were younger. After he met those girls for the first time he had recognized them from his past. I think that when Jack goes on these dates he realizes something he never knew before. I also think that this little competition makes Jack notice how special he is and how interesting he actually can be.

In conclusion I rated the book 24 girls in 7 days a three out of five because I think it could have been better with telling and describing the mysterious character in the book. I didn't like how he debated about weather to stick with The List or just go to prom alone. It makes me think he is confused about what decisions he wants to make in his life when he already said I don't need this. I would recommend this book to people who want to read about dreams coming true and to stick to their goals. So have you chose your decision yet Would you still stay friends with the people who post a silly ad on the internet that you didn't like

Blah, blah, blah. It was an okay book. Truthfully, I was entertained for the first part. Eh, maybe about... the first twenty to fifty pages or so. *Shrugs* But to be quite frank and honest, this book wasn't that big of a deal. You read it, it's over, you're done and move on. Nothing memorable, nothing that wasn't predictable. It's like that time-old movie that you see on TV that's been rehashed with just a different set of characters to fill the same stereotypical roles time and time again. Was it enjoyable? Eh, yeah. Sure. But it was so obvious that it took all the fun out of it. Everything was just like any other teen-romance, high-school prom setting. It's been done before, and because of that, there's really not much to say about it. Is it bad? Nope. But is it good? Nah-uh. Definitely can't say that. It's so "blah" that you can't hate it, but you can't love it either. It's one of those books you "do" instead of "read" really.

So is there anything else I want to say? And is my review REALLY going to be this short? Yes, and yes. If you want to read something that's not new and nothing amazing, then sure. Pick up this book. But please, save your money. Don't buy this one. Quaint as it is, it's just not worth it. The novelty wears off in the first couple of chapters and leaves you just reading because it's such an easy book to get through. Would I recommend you read it at all? Eh... Not really.

Really, save yourself the trouble. Go read something else. There's PLENTY more out there that's worth far MORE of your time and effort. Move on. Choose another book, not this one.

Rejected by the prom date of his dreams, Jack scoffs at the idea that anyone will respond to a personal ad placed by his friends, Natalie and Percy. When an overwhelming number of girls respond, Jack has only seven days to figure out whom to take.

Yea! A pop fiction teen book with some tension that doesn't automatically give away the mystery/ending. There were some parts I really liked (see quote below) and some parts that were OK. I think plenty of teens will like the premise and I know they'll like Jack. He's sweet, funny, and his personal development isn't annoying or heavy handed. Plus, it's fun to have a main male character who actually wants to go to the prom. I think readers will be cool with the ending, too.

"I don't even want to know the rest of that story," Percy said. "But I do want to return to our hero, Jack Grammar. I seem to recall how at the first sleepover I went to at his house, he mandated an hour of silent reading before bedtime." (p. 196-97)
AH! love it.

The first time I saw this book, my thoughts were: "Hmm, seems a little playerific for me. Misogynistic, in fact."
Fast forward a few weeks. Being in a library for two hours will make you very willing to read a seemingly...disturbing book. And that age old statement comes to mind...Never judge a book by its cover. Which wasn't intended literally...but that's how I took it.
So, I start reading. And it's not bad. Not horrible, anyway. Jack turns out to be a sweet, slightly dorky/nerdy kid. And his friends are kinda jerks.
There were several plot points I expected. Like Jack and his best friend getting together. Something to do with Adrian Swift, cuz goshdarnit, she's everywhere! And then, I figured out who FancyPants was. (I was right the third time.)
Overall, a predictable book--Oh, except who his prom date was. Now that was cute. At least theoretically. It's actually pretty creepy, and wouldn't be allowed at my school. Just sayin'. Anyway, back to the point. Predictable, funny, sweet...Typical. And not pimpilicious, strangely.

SWM high school guy looking for that special someone on prom night. NS, in great shape (avid runner), a little too smart for his own good. Will you be the one to wear his corsage?

A fun, lighthearted book with some romance from a guy's POV. Lots of humor, good character growth, non-pat ending.

Only one thing dates this book, which was published in 2006. Jack's friend, Natalie, still has dial up, which I realize is still around (especially in rural areas), but Natalie's family is rich and would've likely upgraded to broadband. The story is set in Iowa City, but I'm pretty sure they had broadband by then. This is super nitpicky though, and I'm probably the only person who noticed this.

disappointing. i loved the idea of the plot, and very interesting in reading this. the first few chapters were actually enjoyable to me.

CONS:

it didn’t take long to get boring. the writing wasn’t that exciting to me. and it just seemed bland. i only kept on reading for the ending honestly.

okay. it got so confusing with all these girls. like, i kept forgetting who was who, and it was annoying to me.

jack is just a bad character. the author tries too hard to make him seem like a “quirky guy??” (if that’s a thing). the way he treated the girls left a bad taste in my mouth.

there were a lot of quirky girl stereotypes that i hAtEd. the girls in this book are so bland and tasteless?? i can’t explain, but they’re boring.

i simply didn’t like the ending. it was predictable. i mean, yes. it was cute. but it annoyed me a little bit.

PROS:

uhhhh. there were a few funny lines that made me laugh. but like, there isn’t much else to say.

oH. OH. the first 5 chapters are okay.

——-

i honestly don’t recommend this book. it was a waste of my time. and the characters are bland (i’ve said bland 3 times. i’m sorry).

24 Girls in 7 Days by Alex Bradley is a 265 page book about a dorky, but sweet and smart boy named Jack Grammer. Jack is struggling to find a prom date, so his two friends, Percy and Natalie post an add to find a girl for him, meaning it to be a joke. When they get over 140 responses, however, they force Jack into a week of speed dating, going on dates with 24 girls in just under 7 days. Jack isn't really into any of them, except for one girl that keeps emailing him, even though he has no idea who she is. But Jack can't seem to find a prom date, and the girl that's sending him emails reveals some surprising secrets. Will he ever find the person for him?
I did enjoy the beginning of this book. It was very cliche, but it wasn't awful and there were a few funny jokes.
The didn't like how the author made the email girl his friend Natalie's little sister. She's only 13 and I felt like it would be better if they were from the girl who had a crush on him the whole time or someone else. I also didn't really understand some of the girls personalities and quirks.

ce passage est drôle car ça me fait penser à moi, quand j’aime bien une personne je me renseigne sur lui quoi !

Page 194 :
« C’est ça l’objectif. Ce qu’ils partagent. Peut-être qu’on est trop jeunes pour savoir comment y parvenir. Mais on peut s’efforcer d’accomplir la même chose. Voilà ce qu’on peut faire »
une belle définition de l’amour, je trouve cela à la fois rassurant et beau.

Page 202 :
« Et on s’embrasse. Pour de vrai, cette fois. »
Wouahhh enfin !

24 Girls In 7 Days is... Strange. (But in a good way!) The book is about a teenage boy named Jack Grammar, he struggles to get a prom date but then ultimately decides not to go. Until his friends, Percy and Natalie put up an ad online telling the world that Jack needs a prom date. Jack of course not happy with the news, confronts his friends about the whole ordeal. They talk it out and Jack finds out he has over 200 responses! Jack, now filled with determination, has to decide which girls to go on dates with. Natalie's sister, Bridget decides that he should get 24 dates in the next week. The way the characters act and speak feel natural and real, one of the many reasons this is my favorite book of all time. The jokes are funny and the emotional parts are the ones you feel most connected with. I felt immersed as I gave this book a second read. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone looking for a good romance novel.

This book is a undiscovered gem, was it very deep or had any realism? no. Was it still most entertaining, funny, and cute book ever? Yes! The second I started this book, I couldn't put it down. The main character, Jack grammar, was super funny and such a sweet narrator. Honestly put me on the list! There were so many mini plots, but it made it such a fun read. The only inconsistency that annoyed me a bit was how fast characters would change up there feelings, but it does make sense for there age and situations they were in, I could relate to how alot of the characters felt. It was like every kind of relationship in high school rolled up all into a week. You could tell the author understood how absurd this book was and just rolled with it. ALSO THE ENDING, It was sooo cute!!
Overall 4.5 stars

The first part of this book was great. It is really funny, the characters are relatable, and the plot flows along at a fast yet realistic pace. The problem starts when all the dates are introduced. They are all very one-note caricatures and I know them more by their traits than by their names. It doesn't help that by the end the author is incorporating themes about what real love is and how to look at oneself in regards to others but the plot (due to the main character's constant changing opinion) is very back and forth and what it is trying to be. It is enjoyable but once you get past that first part it is a bit of a drag. I only kept reading because there was one mystery that I wanted to know the answer to. Would pick it up as a casual read. Don't expect too much from this title.

I picked this book because it seemed like a fun teen romance to read during the summer. I was pleasantly surprised by how much more complicated the book was. In the book his friends put an ad online to try and get him a prom date, it starts off as a joke but then more than 200 girls respond. His friends whittle the 200 down to 24 and that's when it gets complicated. He can only pick one and keeping all 24 straight gets kind of confusing. And trust me you will not expect the ending. This was a great and realistic story about high school love

Could you keep up that pace? (point at a few boys – No, no, oh yeah, you could!)

Jack really wants to go to his senior prom but he’s terrified of asking anyone. His one attempt resulted in failure, and he’s not really up for more of that.

Then Jack’s friends (friends?) write an online ad asking for girls who’d go to prom with Jack and they get flooded with interested parties. So they launch Jack on the craziest round of speed dating – 24 girls in 7 days.

Read p. 61: “I put the phone up to my ear… “Bye, Jack.’”

I borrowed this book from my school library and I loved it so much I want to buy a copy 😍.

I loved how he's so awkward.
And how he seems to have a connection with so many of the girls, I didn't know who to rute for 😂.
his friends were comedy gold ,and just all together loved him, his personality, and how he grew was just *chefs kiss*.
The end with Natalie's sister was so sad,but so closure filled I couldn't be mad.
Plus, the end with him being still unsure of the future, but now okay with that fact was beautiful.

This book bring an interesting way to find a prom date, even though it was just a joke. The one problem I have is, is how does a nerdy kid - with the last name of Grammar - go from having no dates and few friends to 24 girls fawning over him? It seems like a bit of a stretch. And, typically, prom isn't something you can just up and go to, it takes planning and such. I didn't hate the book, but the realism of it can definitely be called into question.

This book was ok. It was kind of hard to root for Jack at times or really care where the storyline was going, especially after it seemed like actually every single plot line I could have expected for the ending...somehow all happened? So predictable and yet not since they threw everything I predicted as a possibility into one story line. Anyway, nothing to write home about, will probably forgot I read it in a few days.

I remember reading this book in high school and loving it. This year, I have been searching for it as part of a Goodreads challenge and it was impossible to find! I was so exited to read it again, but I was left very disappointed. The story is engaging enough, but I would like some more depth to the characters. Jack flip flops all the time on his opinions (I guess that is what a teenager feels like more of the time.) I would just love more inner monologue on how he really feels and why.

this book is so bad lol. almost every single character is terrible. especially the main character. jack is selfish and GOD HE IS ANNOYING! i love dorky guys. but how do you mess one up this bad? he isn’t dorky he’s just weird. he says stuff like “frick” and “spanktacular” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? that’s incredibly disgusting i wanted to vomit every time he spoke
