Every teacher of reading plays a vital role in helping to catch those readers for whom learning to read does not come easily. If you have ever been at a loss for what to say and do when confronted with a child who struggles--this book is for you. "Bringing a Vygotskian perspective to teaching and learning, Pat and Katie have done a wonderful job of meshing theory and practice to produce a book that is both important and practical. I warmly recommend it to all teachers of reading." ~ Linda Dorn
An amazing book for anybody who wants to become a more effective teacher of reading. It is easy to understand, has great examples, and is filled with loads of useful information.
I found it to be a slow start into getting what I was looking for in this book. Chapter 8 onwards was more fitting and gave lots of insight to the needs of students and the lessons that would benefit individuals that are struggling with reading. I loved the insights added by the authors to get more meaning to the reader of this book.
I am currently reading this book which suggests that we analyze our own reading strategies before we start to analyze and share reading strategies with students. What is also helpful is to observe efficient readers who have developed good reading strategies, and then to observe the child who struggles. In the same way, I feel struggling readers also need to observe efficient readers to observe them as they read and share their thinking.
This is an excellent resource for any elementary teacher, especially if you are teaching grade one. It assists you to understand the reading process and to address those little ones who are struggling. The sooner you can address these students and meet their needs, the sooner they experience success!
Absolutely EVERY primary school teacher must read this book. This is the go-to guide for all things balanced literacy....This book made me miss teaching! I can't wait to apply some of the things I've learned in a few years when I go back to the classroom!
I am only on Chapter two and I have already learned so many things that I can try out with my students such as how to teach them how to build their own reading strategy system. One of the main ideas is to model based on the needs of the students. I will see where it goes from here.
WoW! Another excellent resource book for teachers who want to improve their reading instruction skills. This was an easy read with many great ideas that can be used in the classroom immediately.
Several staff members from my building are reading and discussing this book. It is a balance between theory, research, and practical ideas to support struggling readers in grades K - 4.
A fantastic resource for reflecting upon and revising your support for all readers! Very friendly read, with strategies immediately applicable to the classroom. Must read for all K-4 teachers!
Lots of really great tips. Honestly it's more for K-2 but if you have lower level readers in the upper grades it can help to uncover why. Highly recommend reading this if you are a K-3 teacher
