Mary Berry is an English food writer and television presenter. After being encouraged in domestic science classes at school, she went to college to study catering. She then moved to France at the age of 21 to study at Le Cordon Bleu school, before working in a number of cooking-related jobs.
She has published more than seventy cookery books (her first being The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook in 1970) and hosted several television series for the BBC and Thames Television. Berry is an occasional contributor to Woman's Hour and Saturday Kitchen. She has been a judge on the BBC One (originally BBC Two) television programme The Great British Bake Off since its launch in 2010.
I use this cook book a lot when having a crowd over for dinner. Great recipes made to impress your guess and help you to make as much in advance as possible making your dinner party go with no stress .
Got this out of the library, and so good, I had to buy it when I found it drastically reduced, brand new in the sales! Like to dreamily read it, fantasising about all the parties I'll probably never throw, and all the guests who'll probably never taste this wonderful food. I will be such a proper woman. Reality comes crashing down when I realise:
A) I can't cook B) I don't enjoy people coming round to my house (the place is in such a mess because we're in the middle of renovating and have been for the last 8 years, ha ha ha ha ha) C) Even if I get over the above 2 obstacles, if I cook a tiramisu for 12 people, I will eat the lot before it gets anywhere near the guests. Likewise for Creme brûlée. And the pavlovas. D) I am extremely intolerant to most of the food in the recipes (2 days of acute pain & exhaustion is not worth it even for the mouth watering Roasted Vegetable Risotto, Cheese topped Dauphinois Potatoes, Butternut Squash Lasagne or Chocolate and Orange Mouuse Cake). And there is no way I am going to nearly kill myself with stress, even when Mary Berry reassures us that this book will make any gathering stress free and easy, if I can't stuff myself silly with the fruits of my stress free and easy labour.
But I really love Mary Berry, and in another life I would have been her daughter, and joined the family business, and my name would probably be on the cover of the book, as her co author and business partner. And I would be urging you to buy this brilliant book.
