Good Food, Bad Waste: Let's Eat for the Planet
A deep dive into why humans waste so much food and the consequences for people and the planet
Around the world, a billion tons of food gets thrown away every year, even when hundreds of millions of people suffer from hunger. A lot of what we don't eat ends up rotting in landfills which contributes to global warming. The good news is that many governments, communities and individuals are working hard to tackle this giant problem. You can be part of the solution, starting in your own home—and working together, we can decrease our overall waste and make sure all people have food security. Plus, by reducing food waste, we can also fight climate change!
With inspiring profiles of food-waste activists and tasty tidbits on things like best-before dates, Good Food, Bad Waste offers much food for thought.

Erin Silver tells kids like it is. She provides nuance and clarity about complex climate change topics. She gives kids guidance for how to act and move forward. She did it last year with Rush Hour: Navigating our Global Traffic Jam and she's done it again with Good Food, Bad Waste: Let's Eat for the Planet. We are lucky to have Erin Silver writing for kids!
You will learn a lot by reading this book -- how food waste is a major contributor to climate change, that some institutions across the world are working hard to change how much food we waste, that individual households contribute the most to food waste, and some important steps we can take to reduce our individual food waste. She includes interviews with Food Waste Heroes, short information about how to compost, how to start a community garden, and how cows contribute methane to the environment. She's trusting kids with the difficulties while still giving them momentum toward a better way. Bravo!
