This book was too underwhelming for me to write a full review. In summary:
- Too much telling, not enough showing - Two-dimensional characters. The good characters were GOOD. The bad characters were EVIL. The lack of nuance or subtlety made them uninteresting - Really predictable plot. Nothing about it begged me to keep reading. - Under-developed romance. The hero and heroine didn't talk very much. The "romance" was almost all proximity lust, with too little discussion between them to show why this was once-in-a-lifetime HEA love. - Spotty period and setting details. I felt like the author kept forgetting this was Alaska.
I loved the pacing of this book. Even though it was a Harlequin Historical, nothung in the story felt rushed. I believed the chemistry and affection as it built between the two leads.
i loved this book, it isnt the kind of a book i usually read but kate really know how to draw her readers. it was so romantic w. willa and harrison has, the forbidden love that they were trying to do but failed bc they started to grow feeling for each other. harrison is 100% cowboy and def ever woman wants and w. willa being so beautiful and ever man in town wants her. it was cute that they fought trying not to fall for each other but in the end they gave in for there feeling for each other. i duno if i like how harrison had dreams about his late wife and seem like he was so confused of y he had these dreams of her while he has new feeling for willa, i kinda figure he should move on and it wasnt his fault that his wife got killed and he finally saw that willa would be perfect for him and the way she make him feel and all. def crowford is a pig and gross for trying to force willa to marrie him and try to rape her. damn that man does not have mannners at all w. woman. but it was nice to see that willa finally have a new man now and settle in a new town that she became to love and new friends to have. i def would read more of kate bridges books.
Writing was a little thin, but was ok. One thing though...this is supposed to be Alaska in the Gold Rush era...and it mentions a town florist. WTF? A TOWN FLORIST IN ALASKA IN A SMALL TOWN...BEFORE CARS? You know...being Alaska is known for its' flowers all year and all...
Um...how? Yes, I'm sure florists existed in big cities...but in Alaska before modern shipping and refrigeration in a SMALL town? This book was actually doing decently until then. The wedding dress was a tad modern too...but I just can't quibble about it like I do with the FLORIST IN THE GOLD RUSH TOWN! (I don't care if it's EVEN possible...it's just really unlikely!)
Sigh, I'm going to Alaska in a few months. Just feeling like a bender of Gold Rush/Alaska romancy novels and picking are surprisingly thin.
I love Kate Bridges work, and I think this is her best book yet. The story flowed so smoothly you just wanted to keep reading. The romance itself was wonderful....very romantic. No high drama, no angst, just a woman who needed to be loved and a man who needed to love her. The HEA was perfect and made me tear up. A big 5 stars!
WTH Goodreads? This was terrible. You told me this was historical fiction and recommended it to me, since I enjoyed other Alaska books. Um, this is a poorly written Harlequin romance. Now I'm fine with a good sexy book every now and then, but I want to know that is what I'm getting into and I'd prefer it to be readable. This book makes Alaska, brides, and the recommendation system look very bad.
I love books that feature Alaska, as it's one of the many places I hope to see one day. Full of colorful characters, a quick but slightly predictable plot, and lots of Alaskan wilderness this story was plenty of fun to read with a happy and cheerful ending.
A bride on the run who is looking for a job to support herself in the frontier. With great misgivings, Harrison Rowlan offers her the job of bartender.
Guy wasn't manly enough. Prefer men with more confidence. And Heroine didn't have any flaws. Gotta have flaws to be realistic and relate-able. Did not exceed expectations for a short romance.
