Here is my last review from a year ago that I had saved up for Valentine's day. I had way too many to post last year. I don't remember much of the story, but reading my review, I did seem to enjoy the story.
Review:
With a name like Ruby Valentine, she is either going to hate Valentine’s day or love it and our character loves it. She lives on a mountain above a village. She plans out a rockin’ party and then they get a giant snow. No one can get to her. So they take the party to the people.
The story is sort of like some Christmas stories like the Grinch, the reason for the season is people, not parties and such. Ruby learns this lesson in a great way.
There are hearts and colors and this was fun to read. I love the art style and it was a good story too. I have to say, I love seeing so many hearts.
Neither niece nor nephew needed to read this, so this year, it’s all on my own. I think it’s a cute story.
I liked this one even better than the first book (Love, Ruby Valentine) Here, Ruby Valentine moves to a new house high on the hill about Heartland and she and her pet/friend, Lovebird, plan a wonderful Valentine's Day party and invite all their friends from town. They have the best laid plans--but they failed to consider the weather. When a snowstorm prevents the townsfolk from making it up the hill, a sled and a go-with-the-flow attitude helps Ruby reach town. Will they enjoy a happy Valentine's Day, after all?
I really liked all the details in the illustrations (they are so cute!) and Lovebird is adorable. I could appreciate Ruby's sense of wanting everything to be perfect, her dismay when the best laid plans go awry, and the message that as long as you are with those you love the little messed-up plans don't matter. The rhyme scheme is pretty good, though a bit uneven at times. I did wish there was a bit of a resolution about the littering that was (inadvertently) done, but I know that is being picky.
Ruby Valentine Saves the Day is a totally cute book! My kids loved the illustrations. They especially enjoyed Lovebird and thought it was so funny that Ruby's best friend was a fluffy white bird. We're a "read and chat" kind of family. Some fun parts my kids talked about included:
* The cleaning scene. Ruby cleans her house in preparation for her party. My munchkins talked about how we clean our house as a family every Saturday morning. Also, because we have a birthday coming up, we talked about that things we do to prepare for parties at our house and why it's important to clean our home. * The sled ride. As you can see from the front cover, Ruby and Lovebird go on a sledding adventure. My kids laughed in delight during this scene, then started talking about their favorite memories of playing in the snow and their own sledding mishaps. * Celebrating with the ones we love. As a parent, I really appreciated the ending of the book and that it focused on how a celebration isn't necessarily the party supplies and preparations, but it's being with people you love that's really what counts.
Poor Ruby--she's always completely prepared for her favorite holiday, yet something always goes wrong. In this case, it's a hefty snowfall that threatens to doom her party plans. Thank goodness Ruby is inventive and persistent!
The first Ruby Valentine book is popular in our library. There aren't too many good Valentine books out there for kids, so that has something to do with it, I'm sure, but they'll like this one just as much. The illustrations are bright and colorful (heavy on pink and purple, of course), and the story is sweet.
My one wish: no rhyming. It wearies me. But it's still a nice little story.
This is a sweet story that emphasizes the importance of spending time together over material things. It has very colorful illustrations and a rhyming narrative that is fun to read aloud, even though some of the rhymes are a bit awkward. We really enjoyed reading this book together.
"If you're with the ones you love, that's all you need to celebrate."
The scene opens as Ruby Valentine and Lovebird are just getting settled into their new home. You see, they just recently moved to the area and are now residing in a cozy little cottage high above the city of Heartland...the perfect place for a family with the name of "Valentine" don't you think? Ruby's favorite holiday is fast approaching and being new in town, she's come up with the perfect way to celebrate this year...a party! She promptly makes the invitations inviting the whole town to the get together. Everything seems to be going well with the preparations...there's just one little problem. Ruby forgot to check the thermostat when making the plans and it's colder than usual so when the big day arrives....surprise! Snow...and lots of it. Will the big party be ruined leaving these two fine friends to spend Valentine's Day on their own?
The story is quick, the message from the heart. It's one of those books that you just can't help but smile the whole way through. Certainly an eye catcher for any little (and older) girl readers in your midst but not without merit for younger boys as well.
I love the details in the artwork. The subtle hints of pink in the overtly green landscape. The hearts for windows and half hearts for room trim on the house. The writing on the moving boxes, the tea cups and stamps, even the bushes lining the driveway...it's a virtual heart-a-palooza in the best and cutest way possible. Little ones will delight in finding as many hearts as they can while older readers will chuckle at the creative ways they are snuck into each picture. Wonderful attention to detail which makes readers pay all the more attention to it.
The ending is marvelous both in artwork and message showing us that the surprises in life are what really make it interesting and certainly memorable. Happy reading for the whole family. ^_^

My thoughts... This is such a cute story about a young girl and her love for Valentine's Day...I can see teachers, children and parents alike reading this book every year on this holiday. It really has a great lesson at the end...its not material things that matter, but the people who are there to celebrate with you. There is no better message than that when it comes to any holiday - even Christmas! I would recommend this book for pre-K age and up...but it could be used with younger children too I am sure! I would rate this book 5/5 stars!

SYNOPSIS: Ruby's favorite day of the year rolls around again, and she and Lovebird work feverishly to plan the perfect party for everyone in Heartland. But when Valentine's Day arrives, an unexpected snowstorm threatens to ruin all of Ruby's plans. Will Ruby find a way to save the day, or will everyone in Heartland have to wait until next year to celebrate?
Afqter reading and enjoying Love, Ruby Valentine, we couldn't wait to check out this sequel. Another Valentine's Day is drawing near as Ruby and Lovebird settle into a new house. They immediately start planning the absolute perfect party to help celebrate their favorite holiday. Ruby is so busy decorating, cleaning and cooking that she easily overlooks the fact that the temps are dropping rather quickly outside. Just when Ruby thinks she has everything planned just right, a snowstorm hits Heartland on Valentine's Day. No one is able to make it up the snow covered mountain where Ruby lives. She is so disheartened that her perfect party is ruined. Lovebird gently suggests packing up the party and taking it into town. Once they arrive, they realize that things still don't go as planned, but Ruby learns another very important lesson. Planning the perfect party is not what makes the holiday great. All that's matters is spending it surrounded by the ones you love. Another book with a great message, fun rhymes and really cute illustrations!
Ruby Valentine's favorite day of the year has her working furiously on party preparations--from designing invitations to painting her house. She loves celebrating Valentine's Day. Awaking on the big day, she is surprised by a snowstorm, which has squashed all hope of guests making it up the mountain to her house. With optimistic determination, Ruby decides to take the party down the mountain. Faced with yet another set-back when she loses all her "party fare" in the snow as she speeds down the mountain, will she once again be able to roll with the punches and keep a positive attitude? This title is a good lesson for children about maintaining a positive attitude in the face of setbacks. It's also cutely illustrated and attractive as a readaloud(heavy on the pink and more appealing to girls generally as a result).
Loved the illustrations, the story and the rhyming. And it was a perfect read on Valentine's Day. You have Ruby who loves Valentine's Day and when she moves to the top of a mountain she wants to throw a party! Which is such a cool idea that is until a snowstorm hits. But what she does to turn around the bad luck is pretty cool, and the message at the end where we learn that it is better to be surrounded by people you love that is a terrific message to give out. K enjoyed the story overall and the talking bird was his favorite.
This cute read introduces us to Ruby a young girl who loves Valentine's Day. She decides to host a big party but a snow storm blocks her from reaching the town. Ruby decides to sled down the snowy mountain but once she get ti the bottom she finds the presents lost but the community inspired by her act of friendship.
Ruby's special holiday is Valentine's Day. She goes about planning for a special party. But when the day arrives a snowstorm has prevented people from coming. How Ruby responds and what she learns are helpful lessons.
A terrific read aloud book about Valentine's Day with a life lesson about what is really important about this day. This rhyming tale will capture your audience's attention with engaging illustrations and fun and upbeat characters.
Ruby's Valentines party plans don't turn out the way she expected, but things turn out just fine. This is a cute story with cute pictures (lots of hearts) and a good message. My problem with it was I couldn't get the cadence of the rhyming to save my life, it just didn't flow very well.
Wait--is Ruby an adult or a child? She's awfully short and childlike to be an adult, but then, why wasn't she in school with the rest of the kids? I haven't read the other Ruby Valentine books, so maybe they would clear up this question....
uuummm excuse me.... I LOVED THIS BOOK! SO great!! Read with K. Could be read with younger I think. A good story book that didn't require a lot of explanation. Also super real cause plot twist--SNOW STORM.
This would be a great book to read around Valentine’s Day. I really loved the detail in the illustration. Especially when it comes to the part with the people of Heartland. Ruby decides to throw a party and wants everything to be perfect. Of course, this doesn’t work out. But she is pushed to overcome the challenges. It has a really amazing last line after everything working out after all she went through. The line is “If you’re with the ones you love, that’s all you need to celebrate.
Ruby Valentine Saves the Day is a very cute book that would be great for young children. Ruby Valentine absolutely loves valentine's Day, in fact it is her favorite day of the year. I really enjoyed reading this book just because it is a very fun and lighthearted book that children will love. I thought this was a fun book that would be great to read around Valentine's Day. This book discusses the struggles Ruby faces as a snowstorm almost ruins her favorite holiday. I love that Ruby has to problem solve and find a way to continue on celebrating her favorite day. Kids will be able to see how hard Ruby works to ensure that her Valentine's Day plans are still on.
This book would be great for a read aloud during the month of February. This would be a great book to read during a Valentine's Day party, and add some reading into the party. This book is not the most educational, so incorporating it into a party would probably work best. I think that this book is a cute story, that has a simple, yet sweet plot. This book is full of imagination and creativity, which will be very relatable for young children. I would say that this book would be the most appropriate for young ages, PreK- Second Grade.
Ruby plans a big Valentine's Day party, and works hard to prepare her home and all the food and decorations. Then a huge snowstorm blankets her hilltop home, and no one can get up the hill to Ruby's house. How can she find a way to celebrate her favorite holiday? Children will enjoy Ruby's creative solution to the problem.
Laurie Friedman's rhymes are lively and fun, and Lynne Avril illustrates this picture book with cartoon-style characters and bright splashes of color. A fun Valentine's Day book for ages 3-8.
This is a great book in read around Valentine's day. I would read it and talk about how Ruby overcomes the obstacle of the blizzard to still have a party with her friends. I love the statement in the book which she says as long as you have your friends and family the rest doesn't matter. I would talk about what that statement means to the children and the how we can relate it to the class.
Ruy plans a special Valentine's Day party! When the weather takes a turn for the worse, Ruby worries her Valentine's Day is ruined! Join Ruby as she tries to bring Valentine's Day fun to her town!
An adorable book to read for Valentine's Day. This is a rhyming story.
