Where to start? Here are the basics.

Lakisha is an internationally selling indie cross-genre writer of science fiction/fantasy/paranormal romance/YA/children’s lit.

She started writing stories and poetry at the age of 8 and hasn’t stopped yet. She has always been a writer, but becoming a published author took a lot of work and dedication.

That didn’t happen until after she left her home state of Virginia, and moved to Florida in 2004.

Finding time to write while being a full-time mother and school teacher, can be difficult but Lakisha always liked a challenge.

She learned to not let life’s many roadblocks and speed bumps throw her to the curb. She can’t wait to dive in and continue to share the stories swirling around in her head.

Jewels was a surprising read. I enjoyed it quite a bit. In certain parts it reminded me of one of my all time favorite movies, Starship Troopers. Read it, you will not be sorry.

Unique read

This was a unique story to me. If I set aside my questions, it was a good story. There are parts of this future Earth and world that I have questions about though. Overall, I enjoyed the characters but still struggled to wrap my head around certain things brought up in the story. I thought the names were funny and helpful with figuring out species, at least for the aliens. Not sure if book 2 will fill in the blanks or not.

I would enjoy reading a prequel

This was a good storyline. I equally liked some and disliked other characters. I could easily see Jewels being just an offshoot of a more detailed grander story.

Jewels is mental strong but only has one problem, she cannot shield her own mind from other people’s thoughts. She needs to have another person called an anchor to shield her mind. Her and her anchor Jeremy has been pair together for five years. They are both called psionic, they can communicate telepathically along with being able to move things with their minds. They can also teleport too when they want to get somewhere. Jewels meets Dex when she gets posted to do a job at Fort Blackwater.
She brushed against the Felines minds ever so lightly and Dex felt her mind brush against his. He teleported right to the spot where she was. He touched her and broke the connection she had with her anchor and then Dex’s father the King came and touched her too. They both invaded her mind and she was in a lot of pain during this. Jewels almost died from this encounter, but Dex saved her life.
Jewels and Dex are both wanting each other and do not really know why until they are together a lot more. Dex just realized that Jewels is his bond mate for life. Dex finally claims Jewels as his during the choosing ceremony, because Jeremy can no longer be Jewels’ anchor. Dex becomes Jewels new anchor when they go into battle with the Lupines. Jewels blow up all but one Lupine ship and she tells Beta Lastbite that if he tries to harm her husband again she will kill him. After the battle is over Dex goes in front of the Psi-Ops and tells them that he is taking Jewels with him back to his home planet.
This book is fast paced and keeps you interested until the very end. I thought that this book was written amazingly well. Lakisha Spletzer is an amazing author that knows how to use her talent in writing. I really hope that there is a second to this book because I cannot wait to see what is in store for Jewels and Dex. This is one book that I think everybody should read, along with having it on their kindle or bookshelf.

I discovered the Adopt an Indie website, and I thought I gave it a shot. I love science fiction, so I picked up this book. Attention: spoilers.

First, I must say I expected a science-fiction story. Telepaths, aliens, warriors, space war – what else it could be? Actually it is more. It is a paranormal romance science-fiction book. Yes, there are telepathy involved, but in a higher level than just “talking with your mind”. Yes, there are aliens in the book, though it is funny that cat-like aliens fight with dog-like ones. And yes, there are space ships and war, though that part could last longer for my taste.

Being a man, I’m not expert in romance (didn’t I say this earlier?), but as far as I can tell, the romance worked just fine. At the end, I believed that the human woman fell in love with the cat prince, and their love and desire became fulfilled.

I liked that the telepathy was taken to a higher level. Those characters possessing this ability, not only communicated with each other, but could apply bigger mental forces. I found the mental shielding mate role interesting.

I missed some more sci-fi, though. But I know it’s just me, being science-fiction fan.

There is one thing I should mention: there were too much telling instead of showing. I would have appreciated more showing during action, it would make the book more dynamic and enjoyable.

Disclaimer: I read only the sample.

Downloaded the sample on my kindle, and it just isn't working for me. The writing is un-matured, the characters seem cliched, some of the dialogue is just plain silly, and the kindle formatting is really terrible (lots of sentences broken mid-line for no discernable reason, making it difficult to follow dialogue). The explanations of the setting need some help, and it's easily to identify the issue there: I can't tell whether the aliens on the ship in the second chapter are different species or different factions within one civilization, mainly due to the author's frequent use of new proper nouns for describing incidental characters, but very infrequent use of descriptives for them. Not good - 'strong Falassian' doesn't help me visualize that race, or tell me how it's different from others that have just been mentioned.

I'm also a little disbelieving of the alien races she developed - the good guys appear to be cats, and the bad guys dogs. I'm sure this could be done really well, but it still feels a little silly (especially since the names of the races are clearly variations of Earth words for 'cat-like' and 'dog-like').

3's are for readable books of the popcorn/cheesy/pretty-okay variety. 2's are for books that I don't count as readable.

Set in Earth's future this sci-fi adventure/ romance, Jewels, written by Lakisha Spletzer, is an interesting read. Taking readers into a very different future for Earth. One filled with telepathy, military rule (Psi-Ops), advanced technology and caught up in a war between two alien races. The Gatoen Empire, (a race of feline creatures) and a wolf species similar to werewolves from the Lupinious Nation.

Jewel, the MC in this story, is a valuable commodity for Earth's telepathic military. She has never known freedom, being brought up by the authorities and used as a weapon because of her abilities. Her only contacts in her life, have been her "Anchors," who help to ground her abilities and keep her in check and her doctor.

She finds a connection, which evolves into love, in an alien feline man, when her new mission involves being part of the greeting party to welcome the Gatoen Empire to Earth, in Dex, the prince of the visiting aliens.

Jewels is a mix of deception, a struggle for power between different factions and is entwined inside a love story as the telepaths band together to save Earth. This refreshingly, intriguing story is a fun read.

3.75 stars.

I wasn't too sure about this book when I first started, but it quickly picked up my interest and I was able to finish it fast. I really enjoyed this story about human telepaths, and the alien races they are interacting with.

I think that the world building, and character development were well done, and it was very easy to relate to Jewels, Jeremy, and Dex. I particulary enjoyed Jeremy, and admired his devotion to both the women he cared for.

One thing that took away from the book is that I found that at times I was getting confused with all of the characters involved, and would have to go back in the story to get everyone straight. I also found some of the characters names a little goofy, but once I got used to them, it was ok. ;)

Overall, a good read and a fun adventure. I am very interested in reading more books by the author.

So intergalactic intrigue and invading Aliens is not something I would normally choose to read.
Sci/fi generally doesn't do it for me.
However I quite enjoyed this story.
I connected with the characters, the storyline was interesting, I had a healthy dislike for the relevant troublemakers and I was entertained.

I did find the choice of body image for these aliens a little weird, I mean upright standing humanoid Cats and Wolves....O-Kay?!

But like I said, this really isn't my preferred genre to read.
I'm sure that for the science fiction lovers out there this will be right up their alley.
A really good 3.5 star read all the same :]

[2012-06-28] Actually rating 3.5 stars
The story is good and fairly well plotted. I think it's probably written for 8 - 13 (ish) year olds, and the language is suitable for that age group. I got a little fed up with the repetitive nature of the "she missed him like..." and "Dex paced and growled, wanting to get back to her".

There are some sudden jumps in the plot and not all of the psi-ops personnel's abilities are explained up front, which makes the end of the book rather confusing.

I really just couldn't take this book seriously. Cat and dog people are hard for me to get into and the author did nothing but hype up the cheese factor.
The story might have been interesting, but it was sadly not well executed. The writing was uninspiring and the characters were not only inconsistent, but unlikable.
It was a free kindle book and I'm glad I didn't pay for it, but I will not be reading the next one.

Pretty dumb but for those who like sci-fi and want to be swept off their feet, it was pretty good. I've read much better sci-fi though. I mean really? Cats & dogs????

Flat doesn't even begin to describe the writing and the story. There are plot holes and inconsistencies big as Kansas. Of course it's a self-pub (aka vanity publishing...)
