Carnival of Souls:
The story felt quite similar to the one about the theater in the previous anthology. It also felt like it was being dragged on and on..forever. 2 stars for this one.

One Thing or Your Mother:
A typical Buffy episode story with many things going on at once-
a teenager raising a demon who turns on him *surprise!*
people of Sunnydale falling into a deep coma every time they try to fall asleep
Dru decides to have make a kid
Principal Snyder faces a the mother of all demons
Angelos is in town
Buffy's tutor isn't what he seems
the Mayor decides to prepare for Ascension!
3 stars.

Blooded:
A Chinese vampire, a Japanese God, the Slayer, multiple cases of body possessions, Willow's inferiority complex, the rest of the gang and Angel!
3 stars.

Giving these a 3* only because I'm sure when I originally got these, years ago, I would have LOVED THEM because i was OBSESSED with BTVS. They p much read like early season episodes or well written fan-fiction? TBF probably a good/easy read if you fancy reading and are into the series.

This volume 3 is a bind-up of three stories that are set in between episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So these are not recounts of episodes. They are new. These specific stories are set in season 2 and early season 3, and are around 300 pages each. I haven’t read the previous two bind-ups and there is no reason you have to read these in order if you have watched the entire show.
Personally I was very excited to read these because I really like the tv show and I had hoped that these stories would enrich the tv show in some way by focusing on certain characters. Unfortunately I was disappointed for the most part.

Carnival of Souls – 1 star
I had a really hard time getting through the first book of this bind-up which shows in the rating I gave this specific book. Initially the book was off to a good start. I though in the first scene with Buffy she captured her personality really well, but after that there was a certain lack of depth in the characters that I would expect from this. A lot of this had to do with the fact that it felt like it was written as an episode. There was a lot of switching between ALL the characters, almost as switching between scenes throughout an episode. There was no room for depth. At that I also had no appreciation for the plot. Very predictable.

One Thing or Your Mother – 3 stars
The second story was a definite step up from the first story. The story offers us less characters whose point of view we follow. We stay mostly with Buffy with a dash of Willow, Angel, Spike and a new character thrown in. There are about three story lines we follow in this. The main one having to do with principal Snyder who got a bit more depth than he did in the show. Something I truly appreciated. The other two were more secondary. I found the one with Spike interesting to read. It fits with the character growth we later on get with Spike in the show. The other secondary story line was less interesting to me but served as a link to Angel and the mayor throughout this season.

Blooded - 2 stars
This story focuses mostly on Willow who has just experienced a traumatic experience. While her reaction to it is believable I do wonder if the direction we went would be the direction Willow would have gone. It is possible, but I’m not sure I felt it. Willow has been in a lot of traumatic, dangerous situations and it took a while for a good reason as to why this one would give such an impact to come forward. Even then I felt it could use more depth, more attention.

There are moments where I felt that Xander’s point of views were not nessecary. It didn’t add to the story except to show his interaction with Cordelia. There are also chapters and scenes that focus on the history of the vampire that wasn’t that interesting. Mostly because I didn’t care about our villain all that much. I wanted the deepening of Willow, not of some random villain.

Carnival of souls (dragged a bit, and was very OTT, hence..) - 2 out of 5
One thing or your Mother - 3 out of 5
Blooded - 3 out of 5

A quote from Blooded which amused me more than it should have: "She knew Snyder had never liked her, and the feeling was mutual. The guy looked only slightly more human than one of the Ferrengi on Star Trek".

This book was like raising hell with the high school gang on a Friday night. A typical BTVS. Although, some of POVs were a bit skewed and the felt some the plot to drone on and on it was action pact as always and a very fun read.

Three more satisfying stories. It was nice to see more of the supporting characters like Oz and Cordy. I really enjoyed the Angelus character and story, it makes me want a Dru spin-off.

Each of the three stories had its high and low points. Folks reading the books without being fans of the television series will likely find some of the storylines fluffy and juvenile, and may well be confused by the flip-flopping of relationships amongst the characters between stories. This volume is vastly more enjoyable if the reader has already been steeped in the Buffy canon, and has the ability to forgive some of the sillier teenage angst-y moments.
I think that I appreciated the first book, "Carnival of Souls", for both its premise and its cheek. The story takes place during the second season of the Buffy television series, but was obviously written far after - both according to the copyright date and the sly pokes at events in following seasons. A traveling carnival comes to town, amplifying the tendencies of the local townsfolk toward their favored of the seven deadly sins. It's interesting what each of our little Scoobies gets pegged with, the ways in which it manifests, and forces the gang to work together in new combinations to resolve the situation. The dialogue left me with a bit of an awkward feeling, because it sounded like anything the characters would have said in any other episode...good or bad? I don't know. It feels familiar and comfortable, but it also sounds trite and recycled. Of course, coming from a novel based on a television series, many of these books come off like higher-tier fanfiction, but "Carnival" has more originality going for it.
"One Thing or Your Mother", the second book, gave some interesting insight into additional aspects of the vampire lifetsyle. Taking place during the latter half of the second season of the show, Drusilla decids that she wants to be a mother and turns a child. Angelus disapproves, of course, but Spike gets to be a bit of a marshmallow, and gains even more motive for taking Angel out. Also, we get to peek behind the curtain that is Principal Snyder's mind, learning about his childhood and just how far Snyder's ambition will drive him. Even after having watched the series, "Mother" brings back all the ickies that Snyder's character evoked the first time around while managing to make him sympathetic. The second story is probably my favorite of the three, being what I consider the best-written of the trio and the most compelling story.
The final story, "Blooded", is one that I actually own in a stand-alone capacity as well. Willow was my favorite character for the first few seasons of Buffy, most likely because I completely related to the redheaded brainiac sidekick. That said, the "poor me" attitude of Willow in this story, while somewhat understandable, is painfully exaggerated and I found myself wanting to get a bit grumpy with her. "Blooded" was my fastest read in the compilation; I was very taken with the inclusion of the Japanese god Sanno and the Chinese vampire Chirayoju, and their volatile history. The possession of Willow when she cuts herself on an ancient Japanese artifact at the museum falls in line with the mechanics of a lot of dark magic in the Buffyverse, and I think that this story would have made an interesting television episode where Willow gets to trade verbal volleys with Cordelia and punches with her besties. Alyson Hannigan didn't get to do a whole lot of action in her time, and I would have liked to see Willow get some episodes about her strength and personality rather than her gullibility and sensitivity.
Overall, this volume was a good read, and it definitely fulfilled my yen for entertaining fantasy and horror delivered with a Whedonesque schtick.

This is a collection of three different stories that are based on the television series. The time setting for the stories are season 2 and early in season 3. I strongly recommend having some knowledge about the show before reading this book. I will review each story separately.

Carnival of Souls: A mysterious carnival has come to Sunnydale and it's owner has evil intentions. It is a surprise that this arena was never explored on the show and I enjoyed the setting in this story. I liked how the author incorporated the seven deadly sins and its relation to the Scoobies. I really enjoyed their role in saving the day as their part was pivotal. My problem with this book was with Buffy and her storyline with the antagonist. It felt like it was forced and it had a feeling of a secondary nature. 2.5 stars.

One Thing or Your Mother: By far, the best of the three and overall an excellent story. A demon is draining away the life force of Sunnydale residents and Buffy needs to figure out what is going on. Excellent characterization and everyone had a role. This story contained everyone from Drusilla to Snyder. This story also had two minor storylines that added depth to the characters and the author intertwined all the storylines. The final scene at the end was terrific and will be enjoyed by fans of the show. 4.5 stars.

Blooded: Willow is possessed by an ancient vampire. This one was a little silly at times. Although, the final battle scene would have made a nice visual on the television scene. I wavered with this story as the element with our beloved characters I liked. But the storyline with the ancient demons were too grandiose and did not work. 2 stars.

I would recommend trying this book because it has the story by Kirsten Beyer and it is one of the better stories in this universe.

*DOES contain at least ONE spoiler*

This book was pretty decent. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hadn't already watched the series or read the original comic books simply because the three different stories are written by different people, and they wrote these stories with different time periods in mind.

For instance, the first story is meant to take place near the beginning of the series when Buffy and Angel are still in that "honeymoon" phase of their relationship. Then, when the second story opens, Buffy and Angel are mortal enemies and Buffy is trying to consider how exactly she's going to bring herself to kill him. In the third story, Buffy and Angel are all snuggly again.

So, if someone who had never watched the series simply picked this book up on a whim to read it, I think they would find it very hard and confusing to read. But the storylines were good, and the characterization of the characters was great. I could just hear some of the lines coming from the mouths of Sarah Michelle Geller and David Boreanaz.

Individually, the second story was probably the best. It had an entirely original storyline (within the framework of the overall series, that is) that was just really involved and really well-done. I really loved that one. The first one was good, as well. I was less fond of the third and final story because parts of it were very similar to other Buffy episodes/comics already available AND because some of thing things that happened (like Angel actually deciding to kill Willow to save Buffy) just were NOT realistic. Of the three, the last one was definitely the weakest.

However, the anthology was still a nice addition to anyone who loves Buffy.

This was by far the best book of the series.
Stories 1 and 3 both get 4 out of 5. Both were clearly written, had a great story and mostly kept me gripped all the way through. The third story in particular went into great detail about the characters' thoughts and history. At some stages, this was to the point where I wanted to hurry up and get on with the story, but for the most part it was a great help and aided the story tremendously.
The second story easily gets 5 out of 5. This story was thrilling and I finished it in about 2 hours. I simply could not put this book down during the second tale. Like the first and the third, this story was well written, had a great plot and delved into the character's thoughts and histories. So what made it different from the other two? I am not sure. Maybe because it was set during series 2, with Spike, Drusilla and Angelus having their own story arc. This being my favourite series and Spike being my favourite Buffy character may have influenced my opinion of this story. I will not write any spoilers in this review, but story number 2 is definitely one for Spike lovers like myself. Most of the 9 Buffy stories have reminded me slightly of the TV show, I think the writers may have taken some inspiration from episodes and used it to influence their story. The second story, however, was an original idea I do not recall from the TV show. If anyone can prove me wrong, please, by all means do, but at the moment I am unable to think of a similar plot in Joss Whedon's show.
Overall, this book gets a well deserved 4 out of 5 for two great stories and one fantastic adventure.

This rating is only for One Thing or Your Mother. The other two will be read sometime in the future.

One Thing or Your Mother: 4.5 stars. A very good Buffy book. Shame this author hasn't written more Buffy novels, she seems to know the show very well.

OToYM takes place after the episode 'I Only Have Eyes For You'.

First off I loved that Buffy was dealing with a normal teenage problem, her failing grades and the interest of her tutor, and at the time also dealing with multiple Slayer issues. So many times I've read a Buffy novel where the author didn't put a believable or any human/normal teenage problem and it would bring the book/story down for me.

I loved Angelus (when don't I?), loved Dru and Spike, and even though I know there was no Callie on the show I wish .

Although there were a few minor issues here and there it wasn't enough to bother much at all.

I'd recommend this book to any Buffy fan, you won't be disappointed.

There's something almost magical about being able to return to a story that has brought incredible tales of monsters, heroism and battles of good versus evil to life. After acclaimed writer and director Joss Whedon's hit television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended it's run on season seven, many thought that the journey of a young girl forced to become humanity's savior against the forces of darkness had come to an end. Thanks to the works of a few however, her story lives on in many formats, from one-shot video games to comic books galore. This novel, the third volume in a series of novels, brought back the teenage, high school Buffy that fans grew up loving, telling three amazing stories never before told on the show. Fans of the show will definitely want to pick up this book. It's not just a great read of the Buffy universe, but an incredible work of literature as well.

Overall a good book. The three separate stories each take place in a different season. The first reminded me of "Masque of the Red Death" With each sin represented in by a different attracction. Unlike The Red Death however this book clearly states which sin goes with which ride and who is effected by it. The second had a subplot a bit like "Interview with a Vampire" With Dru siring a 8 year old girl.Though I think it was just thrown in to give a reason for Angelus, Spike, and Dru in the story since it had nothing to do with the actual plot. Oh that plot by the way. Sleeping Beauty + Demons. The third story is an ancient Japanese god and a vampire sorcerer possessing Buffy's friends. I haven't read anything like it but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

This book was a bit of a disappointment to me. I mean the first story in it about the carnival was very interesting and original. The second one was a bit overdone I think. I mean so Dru wanted a kid vamp. It has been done a million times. That was where I started getting a bit bored honestly. Twilight, the vampire chronicles, don't even get me started on Hollywood it has been overdone. Immortals want babies I mean big whoop. Then the final story was a bit better. Honestly I didn't like the way the stories skip around. First story Angel is good, second bit he is evil and has killed a major character in the interlude between. That is something I would have liked to read but they left it out. WHY WHY WHY?

All three of the stories were poorly written, especially the first, but they were more about the fun of the series than the eloquence of the writing. Of the three stories, I liked the idea of the third the best, the characters were written the best in the second and the Big Bad in the first. All had their good points and all had their bad. The books were awful from a literary and even a characterizational standpoint some of the time, but for sheer fun, they've got it.

the stories all kept me hooked! i wasn't a huge fan of dialogue in the first one but the story was still good. so that's why this bind-up only 4 stars, because the first story's dialogue was a bit awkward. Which is odd because Nancy Holder's other stuff is very good. Hm. The last story was the best. Would be a great movie, haha!

This book was really good except in maybe some parts. I wonder if Buffy really enjoys her job. It's because sometimes she doesn't want to go outside and slay vampires. I mean her boyfriend is a vampire, so doesn't she think it might sort of offend him. I wonder how he feels to with his girlfriend being a vampire slayer.

Really enjoyed this series. Of course, I'm a huge Buffy fan, so I might be a bit biased. The authors did a good job of keeping the stories in line w/ the actual events of the show but made each story like an additional episode of Buffy.
