This book has a little bit of everything. It's not groundbreaking, and it's obviously subjective. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to choose just 100 writers to include. Even though it includes writers from around the world, it's obviously got a Western slant. Even though I had previously heard of most of these writers, I was surprised by the ones I had not heard of, and I was introduced to some great new works and interesting life stories. I also found myself looking up additional information about many of the writers and their works, even the ones I was already familiar with. A good book gets you thinking, and this one definitely opened some new doors for me. There's not enough space in this book to include all important and interesting information, but it got me on a path to learning more.

It is an interesting compendium of author biographies. It includes 100 writers that have some lasting impression based on longevity or some other arbitrary reason decided by the editorial board. There are a few authors on this list that I have never heard of, but this is mostly because I don't really know much about Chinese and Nigerian literature. All in all, most of these authors have stood the test of time, won some award or reignited the passion of reading in children.

I am sure that a lot of authors were passed over, but when you have to choose from just 100 in all of history it makes those choices rather difficult.

All in all, the book was fine in finding some new information about some authors, but it really needed something more to make it better. Oh well, not much time was wasted after all.
