Sam's Sundaes is far and away the best place on Jelly Bean Street to get your favorite ice cream flavor! One day, five animals dash through the door, hoping little Sam Sundae will whip up the ice cream treat of their dreams. Stinky blue cheese for mouse, fish finger ice cream for cat, squirmy wormy ice cream for chicken, muddy ice cream for hippo, and daisy/grass/dandelion ice cream for cow all seem like excellent choices for each ice cream dreamer. That is, until Gorilla walks in and asks for the most surprising choice of all! This delightfully wacky book will have kids howling with laughter and asking for more, more, more of this deliciously funny story.

About the author

Chae Strathie is an award-winning children’s author and journalist who grew up in a tiny village surrounded by a forest in Scotland, which probably explains a lot. His first attempt at professional writing was creating a Star Wars comic at the age of seven. He sold two copies and made a total of four pence. A regular at major book festivals, Chae has toured the length and breadth of the UK and visited schools as far afield as Romania, reading his stories, acting the goat and singing silly songs about worm ice cream and beard-growing. He lives in Dundee with three annoying cats and a very old goldfish called Lazarus.

A cute book where animals order their favorite flavor of ice cream. They aren't very tasty sounding to us, but to animals they are great. Then gorilla comes in and orders vanilla. When the ice cream man gets done with all the toppings and it is a huge mound of ice cream, the other animals wish they had ordered vanilla too. Lucky for them the gorilla liked to share.

If it’s one thing that children love at any time of the day, that is ice cream! “Gorillas Love Vanilla” is a playful rhyming story written by Chae Strathie and illustrated by Nicola O’Byrne to allow children to go along their animal friends to the ice cream shop to discover the unique tastes that animals love. It is quite humorous when a child meets animal characters that order bizarre ice cream cones that seem disgusting but comical. They learn the types of food that animals enjoy like a mouse ordering blue cheese ice cream and a hippo taking a bath in messy chocolate ice cream. They carry this out with a chicken ordering a cone of worms and a cat enjoying a fish finger cone. This allows children to learn the foods and characteristics of these animals while making it rhyme and sharing laughs. At the end of the story, a child’s fantasy comes to life when a gorilla orders an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink vanilla sundae that catches all the animal’s attention. The gorilla teaches the children about sharing as they don't hesitate to bring enough spoons to share their mountain-high vanilla ice cream with the rest of the animals. This story holds many lessons as we learn about animals and their wild qualities and distinct taste in food; while learning how to share our favorite desserts. This lesson and playful story is done in a rhyming technique using absurdity as animals do not live in a town with ice cream parlors and eat desserts with cones. This absurdity is meant to expand children's imagination and allow them to learn about animals and sharing while their biggest fastinations come to life. Next time a child asks for ice cream as a dessert, they definitely will not be asking for a cone full of worms, but they will be offering to share their favorite treat.

An excellent book for National Ice Cream month! Older kids enjoyed the weird ice cream flavors of the different animals. The big vertical illustration was also fun. It made a great lead in for coloring our own bowls or cones of ice cream and deciding what flavors we liked.

Also related, that I used in storytime to great success, was a poem called Bleezer's Ice Cream by Jack Prelutsky. If your kids like the gross factor in having weird ice cream flavors, this poem is worth looking up.

A colourful, silly and fun book to read with children.

The animals come up with some pretty wacky and disgusting ice cream combinations, keeps children's interest and has lots of rhyming.

They all end up sharing a huge mound of yummy ice cream with chocolate sauce and lots of sprinkles.
