About the author

Isabel Allende Llona is a Chilean-American novelist. Allende, who writes in the "magic realism" tradition, is considered one of the first successful women novelists in Latin America. She has written novels based in part on her own experiences, often focusing on the experiences of women, weaving myth and realism together. She has lectured and done extensive book tours and has taught literature at several US colleges. She currently resides in California with her husband. Allende adopted U.S. citizenship in 2003.

هم 24قيراط نصيب كل منا من الدنيا و لكن اغلب نساء الارض تبغاهم في صورة: حب الشريك و سلامة الأبناء و اذا حرمت منهما اختلت الصورة و ازدادت قتامة

مهما كان نصيبها من قراريط: الصحة و المال و الجمال و النجاح و الموهبة..لن تهتم كثيرا و ستتلف صورتها في نظرها.. للأبد ؛
و التصوير و الكتابة هما محاولة الإمساك بلحظات قبل التلاشي لتتجمد في ذاكرتنا

هذه رواية ستجبرك على ان تعيد النظر لصور اجدادك العتيقة لتستشف كل ما لم يقال ..كل الآلام المختفية خلف نظرات عيون غامضة و جينات نحملها كالقنابل الموقوتة

و سنتعرف على انفسنا هنا من خلال اورورا الحفيدة التي جمعت بين ملامح جدتين من اقوى شخصيات الادب النسائي

بسرد يحبس الانفاس؛ و كلمات كالسياط تأخذنا الليندى في رحلة ثانية من سان فرانسيسكو لتشيلي و بيرو و لندن و باريس ننهى رحلة اربعة اجيال من الدماء الكوزموبولتينية المختلطة

صورتها غلب عليها لون الذهب الذي جلبت منه آلاف القطع التي تكفي اجيال بفضل عقلها البراق الذي يقودها فطريا للمكسب.. لم يكسرها حبها الاول بل بناها انما كسرتها زيادة وزن مفرطة عادة ما تكتسبها النساء ظلما بعد الإنجاب ..لكنها اكتسبتها بفضل شراهتها و اقبالها على متع الدنيا التي عاشتها بتحدى و صخب و تركتها بكرامة حافظت عليها بكل ذكاء و مكر

وصف الليندى لمعاناة باولينا و بكاؤها و خجلها المتنامي من سمنتها و تغير شكل جسدها من اصدق ما تم كتابته عن حالات حرج بالغ ما زالت تعاني منه ملايين النساء خلف الأبواب في صمت و تدفع ثمنه غاليا
و لم تنته مرارتها الا بتحديها الثاني للرياء الطبقى
و لقيود العمر فتتزوج من فريدرك الذي لم يراها ابدا كفتاة رشيقة بل احبها كما هي

ستظل صورتها أسيرة للابيض و الاسود بعواطفها المتطرفة و استقلايتها المفرطة ..فهى تحتويك او تقاطعك..تصنع ادوية او تصنع حلوى ..حبها الاول قادها لحبها الاخير ..اختلاط نقيضين في دماءها منحها شخصية حدية متطرفة ..حريتها و انوثتها ظلا في صراع ابدى حتى انتصرت ميولها التشردية الموروثة من القبطان جون و عاشت حلمها بالتجوال حول العالم
و لا انكر انبهاري بما عاشته رغم استنكاري لحمقها لكنى احببت وفاءها لتاو و اخيرا لروز

اللون الابيض هو الغالب على صورتها و عقلها ايضا..الموديل ابنة تاوتشين و ايلزا مرت كطيف؛ظنت في صباها ان جمالها الباهر عاهة مستديمة تجلب لها الاذي و كالعادة تصدق ظنون الصبا ..ورثت حظ جدتها روز سومرز فاحبت عابثا محترفا و راحت ضحيته

الاخضر كاشجار و جبال تشيللي التي وهبها المحامي المحارب روحه و ساقه و خمس عشر ابن ؛ وسيظهر في الجزء الاخير ..معاناته في الحرب و عنف اصابته منحت الرواية زخما انسانيا ذكرني بالرقص مع الذئاب ..سيفريو كان البطل الرجل الوحيد الذي تابعناه منذ صباه لكهولته ولكن الليندى فقدت اهتمامها الشخصي به و جعلته مجرد رمز

تربية الجدود!! قد يراها البعض خانقة مثل اللون البني الذي اختارته
المصورة لنفسها؛لون "حار" ناتج عن ألوان الأحمر و الأزرق و الأصفر ؛لون متطرف مثل الجينات المتطرفة التي ورثتها من اجدادها
مثل حياتها المعكوسة دائما و ابدا التي بدأتها في عيادة جدها الطبيب الحكيم في تشاينا تاون
لتنتقل الي قصر باولينا من 45 غرفة في نوب هيل ..كانت مرغوبة لكونها طفلة انثى و هذا في ندرة الماس تقريبا

لتترك امريكا و تذهب الي تشيللي مع جدتها و هناك تشب مدللة لكن محرومة الحنان؛ في قصر منيف اخر في قلب سانتياجو الغارقة في الحروب و الثورات

و من تطرف التقاليد التشيللة و رياء التفاوت الطبقي ؛ تنطلق في مراهقتها للندن و باريس
و منها تعود كعروس منعمة لتتزوج من حبها الاول
وتعيش معه معزولة في ريف الجبال الخشن
؛ و حتى زواجها شهد أذى متطرفا و خيانة متبجحة و يقال انه لو اباك وغدا فستتزوجين من هو اسوا منه و لكن يبدو ان نجاة الاعراق المختلطة دوما يكون على يد الاسيويين فينتشلها الطبيب التتري من هوتها كما فعل من قبل تاو تشين مع جدتها..ليخلصها من خوف مبرر و عدم امان ظل متحكم في سلوكها منذ الخامسة و تأصل لافتقادها الحنان من جدتيها الاستثنايتن

لتكتمل الدائرة في النهاية بعودة جدتها ايلزا التي تكاد تكون كررت حياتها بحذافيرها و لكن بالعكس؛ لتكمل لها المربعات الناقصة من ملحمة انسانية ابتعدت بنا عن التأريخ قليلا و غاصت في وحل مشاعر منسية و صدمات متوالية من كل البطلات

و لتؤكد لنا بسردها ان الذاكرة خيال
نختار اكثر ما فيها تألقا
و اكثر ما فيها قتامة ..متجاهلين ما يخجلنا وهكذا ننسج سجادة حياتنا العريضة

رأيي في أحداث النهاية مخفي في الاسبويلر

عاش تاوتشين للغير.. متطرفا في تفوقه متطرفا في طيبته..متطرفا في فعل الخير .. عاش استثنائيا عبقريا و مثله لا يجود بهم الزمن سوى كل مائة عام
لا اعلم حقا الحكمة فيما يحدث لمن هم مثله من نهايات قاسية صادمة
لقد تكررت هذه النهايات في حياتي أنا مرتين لنموذجين في تميز تاو لذلك حيرني القرار الاخير
و ابكتني نهايته
و تفهمت جدا لماذا فسدت حياة حفيدته بعد ما شاهدته من وحشية و تفهمت عشقها للتصوير لتخليد اي ذكري اخري تبعدها و لو سنتيمتر واحد عن ما سجلته كاميرا ذاكرتها الطفولية من وضاعة البشر

لستُ أدري في أي منعطف على الطريق أضعت الشخص الذي كُنته في ما مضى

هذه رواية عن الذاكرة
عن الأشخاص العديدين الذين نمر بهم في داخلنا
عن كل تحول يبدلنا فلا نعود نعرف ((أنا)) القديمة التي ننسلخ عنها

وسواء حُفظت تلك الذاكرة في اللاشعور أو احتفظت بها صورة فوتوغرافية أو دفتر اصفرّت اوراقه
فهي دوماً تبقى جزءًا حيًّا منا ينتظر الفرصة ليعلن عن نفسه

هنالك لحظات لا يمكن فيها وقف الرحلة التي بدأنا بها .. إذ نتدحرج نحو حد ما .. و نمر عبر بوابة غامضة لنجد أنفسنا في الجانب الآخر ... في حياة أخرى

تتقن إيزابيل الولوج في العوالم النفسية لشخصياتها تغوص في اللاوعي
و تدخر الأحلام لتكمل بهاالحكايات المتشعبة
والمترابطة بمصير نساء الأرض

ولم تبتعد إيزابيل عن طريقتها في هذه الرواية
فهي ككل رواياتها نسجت بمهارة وبمحبة
وتمازجت فيها الحكايات بعبقها الخاص

‎ولكنني فوجئت بشخصية محورية مملة لا أستطيع التعاطف معها أو الوقوع في حبها

عندما تقتل شخصية سخيفة رواية ممتعة

ما هي مشكلة أورورا معي بالضبط؟

ربما محاولاتها البائسة لصنع ضحية من نفسها وهي بالتأكيد ليست كذلك

وربما لسخافة منطقها على مدار الرواية

وربما لما شعرته من تبجح وهي تتحدث عن اهتمامها بالتقاط صور الناس "الطيبة البسيطة " كما هي بفقرها وعريها وحرمانها

نفس الشعور بالغيظ الذي ينتابني عندما أقرأ أو أشاهد أحدًا يتحدث عن "الناس الطيبين" محيلين إياهم لمجرد كليشيهات أو تشييئهم

وكأنهم تماثيل مثلا أو أشياء عينية لا روح لهم
لا فردية ولا استقلال

أو كما يسميهم المثقفين -الدهماء

حتى موقف أورورا مع زوجها والذي يمكن اعتباره نبيلاً لم ينصفها

وبقت طوال الرواية أمامي سخيفة باردة بلا أي بادرة على قدرتها على استدرار عطفي أو اهتمامي

بقيت على الحياد ولم أشعر ناحيتها بعطف أو تواصل
بل ووجدتها ثقيلة الدم في أحايين كثيرة

امرأة تشيلية بامتياز
صنعت أسطورتها الشخصية بشراسة
وناضلت كي تصنع إمبراطورية تديرها بشغف وبذخ

لقد أسرتني باولينا بقوتها وحنانها وشخصيته الملآنة عيوبًا إنسانية مثيرة

فهي امرأة ضخمة شرهة للطعام والحلوى
ملابسها مثال أعلى في كيفية البهرجة
بمجوهراتها وكشكشها وريشها
حسها التجاري فطري وعبقري

هي الجدة الضخمة ذات الشخصية الفذة التي كانت ردود أفعالها على مدار الرواية مثاراً للإعجاب

كالسرير الفلورنسي الباذخ الذي اشترته نكاية في زوجها الخائن

فكانت باولينا بكل عيوبها وجشعها وحنانها المتأصل فيها هي ما تبقي الرواية تبض

حية
وألقة
ويجعل لمنعطفاتها متعة خاصة

من الشخصيات التي أحببتها كثيرًا كذلك كان الزهونغ-يي تاو شين

وهو المعالج الصيني الفريد من نوعه
والذي كان عاشقًا ملهمًا، أبًا حنونًا ، وجدًا لا مثيل له
ومنقذا للفتيات المراهقات المسكينات من نيران البغاء القسري

الشبيه باللورد الإنجليزي صاحب الماضي المثير للاهتمام
فقد كان هدوءه الانجليزي -لا بروده بالمناسبة ثم حكمته ، وقدرته الفذة على سبر غور من أمامه
كل ذلك كان مدعاة للتأمل وللإعجاب
أحببتُ حتى عشقه الآثم للتبغ
!

أما بالنسبة للزوجين التشيليين نيبيا وسبرو


فأنا ببساطة عشقت عالمهم
أحببت قصتهما منذ البدايات وأحببت علاقتهما ببعضهما بكل ما فيها من جنون وانتظار وشهوة عارمة

أحببتُ العائلة التي كونوها بأطفالهم الكثيرين ومرابياتهم المسكينات ومواقف سبرو في أغلبها
ثم نضال نيبيا لأجل المرأة المشوب بلامنطقية أحياناً نظرا لطريقة حياتها المرفهة
وتجوالها في الشوارع ببطنها المتكور والذي كان لعنتها ونعمتها في الوقت نفسه حيث كانت خصوبتها مصدراً رئيسياً لحزنها وسعادتها كذلك

الرواية ككل روايات إيزابيل يهيمن العنصر النسائي فيها بقوة

الحدث فيها لا يتطور بل تستطيع القول أنه يدور حول نفسه حافرا ومتوغلا في العمق

ومع إيزابيل أنت دوماً تغوص في الذكريات فختلي بنفسك
وفي طريقك للتعرف على الشخصيات المعقدة تتعرف على ذاتك أكثر

لقد كنت أؤجل مرة بعد مرة الثلاثية الشهيرة حتى أستمتع بها في مزاج مناسب

وأخيرا قررت البدء بالجزء الثاني متخطية ابنة الحظ عالمة أن هذا التخطي لن يربكني في القراءة ومتشوقة للجزء الذي سمعت في أكثر من مكان أنه الأكثر إمتاعاً بعد بيت الأرواح

صحيح أنني كنتُ أتوقع أكثر من هذه التجربة
إلا أن الرواية فتحت بابًا يجعل قراءة

قراءة أكثر امتاعًا

أما بالنسبة للست أورورا فلا أجد سوى

Portrait in Sepia is Isabel Allende's middle book in a trilogy linking Daughter of Fortune to House of the Spirits. Sepia is the memoir of Aurora (Lai Ming) Del Valle, the granddaughter of both Paulina Del Valle and Eliza Sommers. The bulk of the story begins when Aurora is five years old, and Eliza Sommers, recently widowed, has decided to give Aurora to Paulina Del Valle to raise. Paulina ecstatic at finally having a girl to pamper agrees on the condition that Eliza no longer contacts the girl. Within a year the Del Valles relocate from San Francisco to Santiago de Chile, creating a black hole of memories which Aurora carries for the rest of her life.

The Chile that the Del Valles return to is much like the country we know in House of the Spirits- full of political upheaval and civil wars. Here we meet Severo and Nivea Del Valle, Paulina's favorite nephew and niece and the parents of Clara the clairvoyant. Severo and Nivea already have political ambitions here, and once Aurora is grown, Nivea becomes her closest confidante. I would have liked for Allende to provide a touch more backstory to Clara and her siblings so that the bridge to House of the Spirits would have been seamless. Yet, this is Aurora's story, so we do not meet Clara, although she is born late in this book.

Paulina raises Aurora in a pampered, cultured life, allowing her to be tutored at home rather than school. At age 13 she becomes the photography apprentice to Don Juan Ribero, and Aurora quickly masters the trade. Because Paulina is two generations in the past, she feels photography will damage Aurora's marriage prospects so they embark on a two year voyage to Europe, both for Paulina's health and to find Aurora a suitable upper crust husband.

While in England, the Del Valles encounter the charming Dr Ivan Radovic. Paulina is captivated by his modern medical ideas but does not view him as "husband material" for Aurora because he is not of the upper class. Meanwhile at a societal ball Paulina finds Diego Dominguez of an old Chilean land owning family. Although his family appears backward thinking to Aurora, her grandmother practically forces them into marriage, against the better thoughts of practically everyone else concerned for Aurora's well being. In anticipation of the marriage, Aurora's black hole dreams return.

Part III focuses on Aurora's marriage to Diego Dominguez and briefly touches on Paulina setting up Severo and Nivea Del Valle in a vineyard enterprise before her death. Like in the other Allende books I've read there is a twist at the end that provides the reader with an aha moment. There is still some magical realism although not at the levels of Allende's other books, and it is still the sweeping epic I enjoy full of many beloved character; however, after Daughter of Fortune, this was a bit of a let down. The story serves as a bridge to link Eliza Sommers to Clara del Valle/ Trueba and the bridge was not seamless. Some of the writing felt forced because Clara’s story had already been written. Yet, less than stellar Allende is still among my favorite and I’m glad that I read this as it became more than a posterity read. Should I read the trilogy again, it will most definitely be in chronological order.

كالمعتاد من إيزابيل ألليندي، أقف عاجزة أمام موهبتها الاستثنائية والجبارة في الحكي. وقدرتها المذهلة في رواية حكايات عن بلاد لم تراها ومعارك لم تشهدها واشخاص لم تعرفهم وأزمان لم تعاصرها.
روايات تلك المرأة هى الوصفة السحرية والعلاج الأكيد لكل من يريد أن يهرب بعيدا عن واقعه.

ولكن في هذه الرواية لاحظت انها كانت "تتلاعب" بالشخصيات بشكل غير معتاد. فنجد انها سلطت ضوءا قويا على شخصية ما، ثم "هوب" فجأة تلقي بتلك الشخصية إلى الظلام لتأتي بغيرها.
أحسست وكأنها لا تريد للقارئ أن يرتبط بأي منهم، فكلهم راحلون، ليس رحيل الموت الإجباري، ولكن رحيل "التهميش". أعطتنا ألليندي الإيحاء بوجود عريض لشخصيات عدة في الرواية، ولكن في النهاية تفاجأ بضآلة المصير الذي ينتهون إليه.

ولكن الأمر اختلف مع "باولينا دل بايي" التي رسمت شخصيتها بمهارة واقتدار من البداية إلى النهاية. وكأن ألليندي لم تكترث في الحقيقة إلا بها. شخصية تختلط تجاهها مشاعر الكراهية بالحب. مهما كرهت جشعها وانانيتها، فإنك في النهاية لا تملك إلا احترام صدقها وشجاعتها وصلابتها.

كذلك نهاية الرواية كانت تكرارا لما عرفناه من قبل. أو على الأقل يمكن بقليل من الجهد أن نتوقع حدوثه. أو تفسيرا لما هو كان واضحا جليا من البداية ولم نكن في أي حاجة لمعرفته. ماعدا تفسير حلم أورورا، وذلك أيضا لم يكن بمفاجأة كبرى للقارئ.

Why I chose to listen to this audiobook:
1. I've been a fan of Isabel Allende's poetic writing style for several years;
2. I found a hardcopy at my local library's annual book sale and the audiobook via Hoopla; and,
3. November 2024 is my self-appointed "All About Allende" Month!

Praises:
1. this book picks up where Daughter of Fortune left off, which was my first introduction to Allende back in 2009. In Portrait in Sepia, we follow Aurora Del Valle, granddaughter of Daughter of Fortune's main character, Eliza Sommers;
2. I was intrigued to learn what was causing Aurora to have such vivid, horrific nightmares as she recounted her roots through various family secrets;
3. Allende seems to be fond of writing strong-willed grandmothers and their more levelheaded spouses into her stories. I especially loved the character of Paulina Del Valle, Aurora's paternal grandmother. Narrator, Blair Brown, expertly brings Paulina to life. Paulina is an outspoken woman, which at times can come across as crass, but to do otherwise would be an injustice to her true character. Frederick Williams, Paulina's second husband (and her former English butler) is a man you'd want on your side as he is very reasonable and is always there to pick up the pieces;
4. Allende includes historical background about The War of the Pacific (1879-1883) in which Chile won against a Peruvian-Bolivian alliance over land rights, something I never knew about until now, leading me to research it in further detail;
5. my memory has slipped somewhat since reading Daughter of Fortune, so I was thankful that Allende alluded to it in this story with enough detail that I could sufficiently recall it; and,
6. the hardcopy's end pages feature a family tree - most helpful!

Niggle:
Although Allende often incorporates historical background into her stories, especially in regards to Chile, I'm finding that she tends to tell more than she shows. Character Severo Del Valle, Aurora's adoptive father, plays a very small part in the narrative when it comes to Allende's history lesson in regards to The War of the Pacific.

Overall Thoughts:
I really enjoyed being transported back to San Francisco and Chile during the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Following Aurora's memories, including a history of her parents and grandparents, gave me a true sense of her life as a whole. A most satisfying read!

الشخصيات المحيطة بنا
ذواتنا و حتى الاحداث مجموعة من الالوان و الصور.:
▪ صورة مشعة و صاخبة ك "باولينا"حين تراها تتذكر:
الشره و التمسك بالحياة.
▪ صورة تستحضر الحكمة حين تراها
لكنها تنبض بالحياة : حياة هادئة بسيطة .صورة تاوشين
▪ صورة براقة و جميلة و تتمزج معها ألوان الحياة بالحب و الجرءة مثل "نيفيا "

حين اغلقت الرواية هذه هي الصورة التي بقيت معي و جعلتني أتسال
م اللون الذي اعتمده للحياة ؟
و ماهي صورتي و صورة من أُحب ؟

هذا جزء الثاني ينبض حياة و إنسانية و انتصار جزئي للمرأة في شخص

🔹️اعتذر اصدقاء الرحلة على انهاء لكن تلك الصور تملكتني و فرضت نفسها مع تواجد الوقت.

چند سال پیش که توسط یک بلاگر کتاب خانه‌ی ارواح و نویسنده رو شناختم. اصلا اون موقع نمیدونستم دختر بخت ،چهره‌ای به رنگ سپیا و خانه‌ی ارواح سه گانه هستن.

این کتاب سال‌ها پس از وقایع کتاب دختر بخت می‌افتد.
در کتاب دختر بخت نویسنده به شخصیت فرعی به نام پاولینا دل واله و سرنوشتش می‌پردازه و فکر کنم چون قراره در کتاب بعدی حضور پررنگ‌تری داشته باشد.
نویسنده مارو باهاش آشنا کرد.

این کتاب سرگذشت نوه‌ی پاولینا دل واله و الیزا سامرز هست.
اورورا دل واله، به خاطر یک آسیب روانی شدید، تمام خاطرات پنج سال اول زندگی‌اش را از یاد می‌برد.
و اورورا که خود هم روای داستان هست. سعی می‌کند تکه های از دست رفته اش رو پیدا کند.
و از همین طریق زندگی پر فراز و نشیب خود و بقیه‌ی شخصیت ها رو بازگو می‌کند.

راستش من قبول دارم در طی این سال‌ها کتاب‌های خیلی خوبی خوندم و کتاب‌های خوبی هم هستن که هنوز نخوندم.
اما آلنده از وقتی کتاب خانه‌ی ارواح رو خوندم همیشه دوست داشتم کتابی مثل اون پیدا کنم اما نمیدونستم دو جلد دیگه هم داره خوشبختانه هر سه رو خوندم اگه نمیخوندم روانی می‌شدم 😅
سه شب هست که من این کتاب رو میخونم در اوج خستگی هم می‌خوندم

این سه کتاب متاسفانه هیچکدوم در بازار نیستن.اما کتاب صوتی دختر بخت هست و پی دی اف چهره‌ای به رنگ سپیا هست و خانه ی ارواح در فیدیبو هستش.
بی نهایت دوسش داشتم
قشنگی این کتاب بر خلاف کتاب‌های طولانی و توصیفات طولانی و کسل کننده که فقط میخوان حجم کتاب رو ببرن بالا.
اینه که یسری از شخصیتها حضورشونو پررنگ می‌کرد و هر کدوم وظیفه‌ای دارند. حتی یجا از جنگ های داخلی آمریکای لاتین شیلی و پرو تعریف می‌کند اما زیاد از خود داستان دور نمی‌شود.
و اصلا پر گویی نمی‌کنه.
همه چی این کتاب بجا و زیبا نوشته شده.
در آخر اینکه این کتاب بعیده دوباره تجدید چاپ بشه چونکه صحنه های اروتیک زیاد داشته.
کتابی که با وجود اینکه کتابشو ندارم اما اینقدر دوسش داشتم تاابد در ذهن من حک می‌شود و هیچوقت فراموشش نمیکنم.

كان لي جد مثل تاو شيين .. و كنت ملتصقة به دائمًا و تمثلّت فيه بالنسبة لي كل صور الحنان و التي أثرّت في فيما بعد .. و رحل عني و أنا في التاسعة و حاليًا اشتاق إليه كثيرًا .. و جاءت تلك الرواية لتكون الاقوى تأثيرًا و تزيد من ضباب أفكاري ..
إجمالاً الرواية .. كانت بديعة و كما أوضحت سأسهب أكثر عند إنتهائي من الثلاثية :)

أتعجب هل يمكن أن تستكمل الابنة حماقة بدأتها الأم وتكتمل المأسأة بقلة حظ الحفيدة وسقوطها هى الأخرى ضحية الخيانة
رحلة جديدة فى أعماق أمريكا الجنوبية التى لا تختلف كثيراً عن بلداننا العربية، تاريخ طويل من الانقلابات العسكرية على الحكام المدنيين وتاريخ أطول من القمع والتعذيب والتنكيل بالمعارضين، رحلة تجرى أحداثها على لسان أورورا – لاى مينج – ابنة لين سوميرز وحفيدة إلزا سوميرز

هذه رواية عن رجال ملائكة فى شخص تاو تشين المعالج الصينى المُحب والمُضحى النبيل الذى آلمنى مصيره، سيفيرو الملاك الحارس زوج نيفيا والذى أنجب خمسة عشر طفلاً الاشتراكى المُناضل والثورى.
وهى رواية عن رجال شياطين فى صورة ماتياس و دييغو، وهما على النقيض تماماً من سابقيهما، فلا يمُتان للشرف والأمانة بأى صلة.
هذه رواية عن سيدات مُحبات مُخلصات فى شخص إلزا وأورورا ودونيا ألفيرا كل منهن مُحبة على طريقتها، عاشقة ومُضحية وأحياناً مُغفلات، وأُخريات قويات وذكيات فى شخص باولينا الثرية، وهى عن خائنات فى شخص سوزانا.


أورورا
الطفلة التى عانت فى طفولتها ماساة مقتل جدها المعالج الحنون الذى كان لها بمثابة الأب وهجران جدتها التى تخشى عليها غدر الحياة فتفرط فيها لصالح جدتها من والدها السيدة باولينا دل بايى الثرية التى حصلت على ثروتها من المتاجرة بآلام الناس وأزماتهم فأثرت ثراءاً سريعاً وفاحشاً ولكنها كانت فى المقابل عِوضاً عن الحنان والحب الذى افتقدته أورورا برحيلها عن تشايناتاون.
يبدو أن الزمن يدور والتاريخ يعيد نفسه بقسوة على الضعفاء، فأورورا ورثت عن أمها وجدتها ليس فقط الحماقة ولكن أيضاً قلة الحظ فى الحب والرجال.

أبدعت الليندى فى وصف لحظات ما قبل انقضاض العسكر على السلطة المدنية لانتزاع زمام الأمور بزعزعة ثقة المواطنين فى الحكم المدنى و فرض شخصيات بعينها على نظام الحكم يعيثون فساداً وينشرون الفوضى ومن ثم تصبح كل الظروف مواتية لانقضاض سريع وحاسم على السلطة.

نجحت أيضاً الليندى أن تصور كفاح النساء ومثابرتهن للحصول على حقوقهن وكانت نيفيا أشجع مثال فقد ضربت بأعراف وتقاليد مجتمعها عرض الحائط وناضلت من أجل حريتها وكرامتها حتى وإن كان لنساء أُخريات رأى آخر.

كما أحببت بشدة شخصية تاو تشين فى الجزء الأول أحببت أيضاً فريدريك ويليامز هذه الشخصية الاستثنائية، الملاك الحارس المُحب باولينا حُباً عذرياً ، لا يطيق فراقها ولا يعرف للدنيا معناً بدونها، الإنجليزى الهارب من سجنه والذى يحسبه الناس نبيلاً إنجليزياً، القهرمان والقائم على شئون باولينا والذى أكمل دوره برعاية أورورا بعد وفاة جدتها باولينا.

القراءة ل إيزابيل الليندي لها رائحة الحنين والذكريات فهي اشبه بالاستماع لحواديت الجدة ، حدوتة ورا حدوتة والحواديت مبتخلصش

“Memory is fiction.”

Born in San Francisco in 1880, Aurora Del Valle carries the blood of Chilean aristocrats, Chinese healers, and English ship captains. This book is purportedly her attempt to piece together her memories with the accounts she’s heard to create a portrait of her life.

In typical Allende fashion, the story is chock full of culture and adventure, romance and heartache. We learn about the War of the Pacific in Chile and sex trafficking of Chinese girls in California. We take ocean liners across the seas, and cross the Andes by mule.

Allende may have tried to pack too much in here. The novel is held together by the through-line of Aurora’s life, but with so many connected lives to explore, it lacked the continuous atmosphere I’ve felt in some of her other books--that fictional dream you fall into and don’t come out of again until the end.

But she gives us wonderful characters to revel in. The males in Aurora’s life are fascinating: the English Butler/Aristocrat Williams, the hard-living Matias, the dedicated soldier Severo, and the beloved grandfather Tao Chi’en who smells like the sea.

And even better were the utterly unique female characters: the strong and stoic Eliza Sommers, the flamboyant and powerful Paulina de Valle, and the voracious reader Nivea who has unwavering faith in her husband as well as her political causes. All share a disregard for the confines placed on women of their day, and with these role models--though the restrictions on women continue in her time--Aurora is given the chance to thrive.

I read this trilogy in the order they were published, with long spaces in between. Next it would be fun to read them close together, in chronological order--Daughter of Fortune, then Portrait in Sepia, and ending with what is surely the best, The House of the Spirits.

“Who told you that I want to be happy, Severo? That’s the last adjective I would use to define the future I aspire to. I want an interesting life, adventurous, different, passionate--in short, almost anything other than happy.”

هذه السيدة الجبل كما أحب أن اسميها تعطيك فى كتبها ورواياتها كل شىء
تغمرك بفيض عجيب من الافكار المختلفة
والمشاعر المتأججة بحب الحياة وحب الجنون
تسعى الى ابراز ذلك الصراع العبثى,اللامعقول,الغرائبى بين إرادة الحياة
وإرادة السكون"لا اقول الموت"فى نفس كل منا

قصة حياة الليندى بذاتها تصلح مادة لسيل من الروايات المتفردة
منذ قرأتُ باولا وأنا متيم بها
واعتقد بأنه عملها الابرز والاهم
تأتى رواية صورة عتيقة كحلقة وسطى بين روايتى الليندى بيت الارواح وابنة الحظ
والثلاثية فى مجملها محاولة للتعبير عن معاناة المرأة والأم المرأة التشيلية
عبر عقود ممتدة فى الزمان والمكان

تشكل الرواية حلقة وسط في ثلاثية، بين "ابنة الحظ" و "بيت الأرواح" .. لم أكن مدركة لهذا الأمر في البداية وتساءلت لماذا يبدو كل شيء مألوفاً :)

الرواية جميلة، ولكنني بدأتُ أعتاد على عوالم الليندي، وصرتُ أتكهّن تقريباً بانعطافاتها، وتبدو لي حيلها السردية مكررة في كثير كتبها. الانطباع إياه الذي تركته فيّ قراءة رواية " الجزيرة تحت البحر " ..

لم تدهشني، ربما تدهش آخرين.

The sequel to Daughter of Fortune, Portrait in Sepia, is the story of Aurora del Valle and her continuous search for her family roots.
She sets out to find answers by digging up buried secrets, in order to define her own identity and to create her own legend.

In the end, the only thing we have in abundance is the memory we have woven. Each of us chooses the tone for telling his or her own story.

Una historia sobre la memoria, la familia y los secretos que en ésta se amparan. Isabel Allende nos deleita en esta oportunidad con una novela narrada en primera persona, continuidad de la saga iniciada con hija de la fortuna en la que se exploran las andanzas y desesperanzas de las familias Sommers y Del Valle con el cuidado y exquisitez narrativa de la que sólo es capaz su autora.

Desde las primeras páginas y a pesar de, por tratarse de una novela histórica, situarnos en un espacio y tiempo que nos es ajeno, Allende logra un efecto poderosamente evocador en el que es fácil sumergirse. Aunque me llevó unas cuántas páginas llegar a interesarme en un sentido auténtico por sus personajes, no me costó en absoluto dejarme arrastrar a finales del siglo XIX a ciudades que jamás conocí, con normas sociales que hacen eco en nuestros días y otras que nos suenan más a mitos del pasado que a algo que hayamos estado cerca de experimentar.

La historia abarca temas como el amor, la complejidad de los vínculos incluso cuando hay sangre de por medio, los secretos, la privación parcial de la identidad, el trauma, el desamor y muchos otros. Lo que resulta quizá más cautivador es la forma en que concilia las desventuras amorosas de más de una generación con una fuerte lucha política que interpela a esta familia acomodada tanto como a cualquier otro chileno y que es tanto un reflejo de la época como una crítica a las fuerzas gubernamentales corruptas y la lucha de poder. A esto se le suma, en las figuras de Nívea y Matilde, un potente grito por la incursión de la mujer al terreno político y por la demanda de derechos ciudadanos que hoy damos por sentado.

En conclusión, es un texto bastante recomendable para cualquier amante de la ficción histórica o las historias sobre familias.

لقد تلونت معهم. بل ولم تزل ألوان هذه الرواية عني وستبقي ذكرها معي.
شكرا لكي إيزابيل. لقد لونتي جزاءا في وبلورتي جزءاً أخر
رواية ظاهرها سطحي يظهر مدي قدسية الحب الاول. ومدي تفاني المرأة في تدمير كرامتها وإلغاء ذاتها. إلا أنها. أظهرت. تدرج للإستقلال الذي حدث داخلها بعد ذلك وكيف أوجدت لها حيز. وسط العقبات والتحديات إكتشفت ان المرأة متغيرة. متنوعه. متلونه وأخيرا متمردة
لقد كنت أري الشخصيات من منظوري انأ كرأيي وإنتقادي
ولكن في هذا الجزء حاولت أن أراهم من منظور شخصياتهم ومحيطهم ونشأتهم
وفوجئت بأنهم بذلو جهدهم في عيش حياة سعيده أو حياة مقبولة.
أو أستطيع القول أني كنت متسامحه معهم جداااااا. وربما أبرر لكل بطل. تصرفاته و إعتقادي بأنهم لن يفلتو الحياة بالعيش بدون معني

عبقرية أمريكا اللاتينية الأولى في السرد وبناء الأحداث وحبكها في القرن العشرين ومطلع القرن الواحد والعشرين,,,سلاسة في الحكاية بتخليك تندمج بالأحداث وتضل متذكر الشخصيات في حال تركت الرواية ورجعت الها...خلال قرائتك بتضل عايش حالة غريبة من التواصل مع القصة والأبطال لدرجة ممكن تفتقدهم وتشتاق الهم وممكن تحلم فيهم وتتعاطف معهم والأكيد إنك بتفكر معهم وعنهم وبتتوقع ايش ممكن يصير أو شو الحدث التالي !!!الليندي من الكاتبات اللي بتخاف انك تنهي رواياتها لإنك خايف من الفراغ اللي رح تتركه!!اهم نقطة انه هاي الرواية هي الثانية ضمن ثلاثيتها الجميلة:ابنة الحظ,صورة عتيقة,بيت الأرواح...يفضل أن تقرأ على الترتيب لإنه في شخصيات بتتكرر وبتتطور...بعد ما تخلص قراءة رح تكتشف انه الليندي سحرتك وعلقتك بوحدة من الشخصيات

Isabel Allende's, "Portrait in Sepia," is an absolutely wonderful sequel to her, "Daughter of Fortune."
Like its predecessor, it is over the top with fantastic characters, the writing is sublime, and I have learned more about the history of Chile and San Francisco than I ever imagined possible.

Ms. Allende is a major talent.

A few days ago I dreamt I was playing “Down Under” by the 1980s Australian band, Men at Work. When I woke I did remember that catchy phrase,

Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover

It might be odd, but one could apply theses words to “Portrait in Sepia” by Isabel Allende. I know, you will say, “hold on, those lines are referring to Australia, not Chile? Are you outta your mind?”

Let me explain. You see, I live near the top of the world in cold Canada (okay not too cold as I wrote this on my deck), and as far as I am concerned, Chile (and just about everywhere south) is the land down under. But that is just me.

The women in many Allende books, do glow. They have such tough lives and through it all, they survive, thrive and make it (although many do not). The grande dame of the story Paulina Del Valle is quite the character, as is the heroine of the story Aura.

The men, yep, they plunder. They are notorious at having affairs, have short tempers or are just jerks. They go to war, they kill, they steal, or they become politicians, who go to war and steal. Ah, Chilean history!

Okay, maybe not all of them. In fact there are several that look out for the women. Severo Del Valle and grandfather Tao’Chen are noble men. Or that gracious servant Frederick Williams, who really becomes part of the family (and has an Aussie connection). They go that extra mile.

The story bridges Chinatown and the Mission areas of San Francisco with Chile. This contrast of Chinese and Hispanic weaves into a fantastical and almost epic tale, as Allende skillfully tells. She spans fifty years bringing in some very dark periods in both country’s past (1862 to 1910).

At it’s heart is a love story. Erotic love, family love, love for one’s country, wherever that might be. All hinged around a woman’s fascination for the new arts, photography.

Can’t you hear the thunder? No need to take cover. It’s an enjoyable yarn.

A special thanks to Maricarmen’s recent review that made me pluck this book from the shelf, dust off the dust and read it.

“only passionate people make interesting characters. Nice people with common sense only make good former spouses”.
Keeping that in mind, i usually have high expectations to see rebels, outlaws, eccentrics in Allende’s novels. Much to my disappointment, she fed me with a horde of former spouses. That story kicks off with a character that belongs to the type i hate the most: a teenage girl incredibly beautiful but also endowed with a less than peanut-sized brain who didn’t do anything but daydream of a prince and then blindly fell in love with an asshole. Thank goodness, she died after the first 100 pages. The middle was alright, when Chile went to war with Peru and Bolivia and women fought for universal suffrage. But then the ending was again, frustrating with a boring character that repeated exactly the same stupidity: getting married with a guy who symbolized the height of blandness. All the interesting ones drift into the murky background, I want to see more of Nivea the suffragette, Pidena the dissident, Lowell the boisterous actress, but they all disappear fairly quickly. And I have a major issue with Allende: she can never leave her female characters alone. Somehow, they’ll get married or fall in love in the end no matter how strange the relationship might appear. But why? Maybe, that wasn’t normal in Chilean society. But isn’t normality the last thing I want to see from Allende? I’m afraid for Allende, ordinariness is mediocrity.

إن الذاكرة خيال. نختار أكثر ما فيها تألُّقًا وأكثر ما فيها قتامة، متجاهلين ما يُخجِلُنا، ونحُوك هكذا سجّادة حياتنا العريضة.

إنني أُحاول بجزع، من خلال الصورة والكلمة المكتوبة، أن أنتصر على شرط حياتي المحكومة بالزوال، فأقتنص اللحظات قبل أن تشحب ويبهت لونها، وأجلو الغموض عن ماضيَّ.

كل برهة تتلاشى في نفحة وتتحول في الحال إلى ماضي، فالواقع عابرٌ وزائل، محضُ حنين. بهذة الصور وهذة الصفحات أُبقي الذكريات حيّة؛ فهي فرصتي للوصول إلى حقيقة مُتَفَلِّتَة، ولكنها حقيقة على أي حال، تُثبت أن هذة الأحداث قد جرت وأن هذة الشخصيات مرّت في قَدَري.

أكتبُ لأجلو الأسرار القديمة في طفولتي، ولتحديد هويتي، ولأخلق أسطورتي الخاصة. فما نملكه في آخر المطاف ملء أيدينا هو الذاكرة التي نسجناها.

كل واحد يختار درجة اللون التي يروي بها قصته الخاصة؛ وأنا أرغبُ في أنا أختار الطبع بالبلاتين دائم الوضوح، ولكن ليس هناك في قدري ما يملك هذة الخاصية المتوهجة. إنني أعيش ما بين تدرجات ألوان مختلطة، وأسرار مُغَبَّشة، وارتياب؛ اللون المناسب لرواية حياتي يتفق أكثر مع لون صورة عتيقة باهتة، لون السيبيا.

Historical fiction covering 1862 – 1910, set mostly in Chile, that carries on the family saga started in Allende’s outstanding Daughter of Fortune. Aurora del Valle tells her life story, starting with her birth in San Francisco to Chinese and Chilean parents. A traumatic incident has erased memories of her early years and has resulted in recurring nightmares. She grows up in the privileged world of her grandmother, which enables her to initially avoid the social restrictions placed on women and learn the art of photography. Her marriage leads to disillusionment and growth. Through photography and writing, Aurora seeks to discover meaning in her life. She notices that perspective changes over time and memories fade like old photos. While the primary focus is on Aurora, Allende has provided a patchwork quilt of segments focused on the lives of other family members, involving politics, love, honor, sex, feminism, patriarchy, social mores, and marital trials. Themes include memory, identity, and the search for truth.

The strength of this novel lies in its characters. They are deep and well-articulated. Some are eccentric and outlandish. Others are reserved and honorable. Many of the women are strong, intelligent, and ahead of their time in terms of struggling against the prevailing views that women should be silent and subservient. This novel is also rich in Chilean history, portraying the War of the Pacific among Chile, Peru, and Bolivia and the brutally violent internal political struggles.

Written last, this is the second of a three-book series between Daughter of Fortune and House of Spirits. The beginning of this book catches the reader up on the major events of the previous story, so it stands alone, but I recommend starting with Daughter of Fortune (link to My Review). Recommended to readers that enjoy family sagas, stories filled with eccentric characters, or explorations of identity.

"فهذه القصة طويلة، وهي تبدأ قبل ميلادي بزمن طويل وتتطلب صبرا لروايتها وصبرا أكبر لسماعها "

هكذا قالت اورورا👆 في بداية كتابتها للرواية ،وبأنها ستكتب قصة حياتها لخلق اسطورتها الخاصة بها.
اتضحت الصورة في آخر صفحات الرواية، تبين لنا صورة كل شخص عبر خيوط ذاكرتها.
تعاني بطلة الرواية اورورا دل بايي من صدمة نفسية قاسية تمحو من ذاكرتها السنوات الخمس الأولى من حياتها، وعندما تجد نفسها مضطرة إلى مواجهة العزلة وخيانة الرجل الذي احبته، تقرر السعي لاكتشاف سر ماضيها ...

نجد في هذه الرواية وصف الإنسان أكثر من وصف الطبيعه والأماكن، ووصف المشاعر .
جسدت ايزابيل صور مختلفه للشخصيات الموجودة في الرواية منها صورة الأب الحنون والطبيب الذكي، صورة الأم التي تخاف على ابنتها من جمال منظرها، صورة المرأة القوية الشرسة في التجارة وجمع المال والمراهنه دائما على النجاح، صورة الولد الطائش (توماس)الذي لم أحبه ابدا الذي قلب حياة لين -_-
بينت أيضا صورة المرأة المجاهدة في حبها لزوجها على الرغم من إعاقة زوجها،

صورة واحده كشفت لها ما لم تعلم به ):
كيف كان جدها يدعي أن حفيدته عبقرية وهي صورة لم تنتبه اليها؟!

لا أريد إحراق الأحداث في كتابة الرفيو، وبعد كتابة ايزابيل لا يمكنني التعبير والآن تأكدت أنها هي كاتبتي المفضله ثالث عمل اقرأه لها وفي كل مره تبدع في الكتابه.

والشيء الممتع أيضا أنني بدأت اقرأ مع مجموعة قراء ادبيين ولأول مره اشارك في هذه التجربة ولي الشرف أن أقرأ معهم أن كانت لي فرصه مره اخرى بالتأكيد.

Y ya puedo decir que he terminado una trilogía, que empecé sin saber que era una trilogía. En septiembre de 2023 la obra más emblemática de Isabel Allende, “La Casa de los Espíritus” se convirtió automáticamente en una de mis mejores lecturas del año, la cual hice como L.C. con un grupo de chicas que quedamos muy satisfechas con la prosa de Allende, así que nos decidimos a leer los otros dos libros de la trilogía, “Hija de la Fortuna” y “Retrato en Sepia”, que, como ya os he dicho antes, yo no sabía que estaban relacionados con el primer libro. Leímos “Hija de la Fortuna” en febrero de este año, y ahora en septiembre ponemos fin a esta historia familiar en el Chile del siglo XIX-XX con su última entrega. Si me preguntáis, yo lo leería por orden de publicación, que es como lo hice yo, empezando por “La Casa de los Espíritus” y siguiendo con“Hija de la Fortuna” y “Retrato en Sepia”; aunque cronológicamente en el tiempo el de “La Casa de los Espíritus” sea posterior a los otros dos. No te vas a comer ningún spoiler si te des los otros dos antes, pero es verdad que hay varias referencias que se captan mejor y se disfrutan más habiendo leído antes “La Casa de los Espíritus”. Lo que desde luego no se puede hacer es leer antes “Retrato en Sepia” que “Hija de la Fortuna”, pues este segundo es continuación directa del tercero y solo se entiende leyéndolos por orden.

Hija de diferentes culturas y razas, en la joven Aurora del Valle confluyen las historias de tres sagas familiares. Por un lado es nieta de Eliza y Tao, una pareja que ha conseguido estar juntas, después de muchos avatares, y pese a sus diferencias raciales en el brutal San Francisco de principios del siglo XX; y por el otro su abuela es Paulina Del Valle, una dama inteligente, ambiciosa y decidida, que no conoce el “no” por respuesta y con un olfato más que afilado para los negocios. La cual está relacionada con severo y Nivea, de los cuales descienden las formidables mujeres que protagonizaron las páginas de “La Casa de los Espíritus”.

Quizás este conglomerado de circunstancias y sangre marquen el destino de Aurora, quien crece libre de muchas de las imposiciones de las mujeres de su época y dedicada en cuerpo y alma a la fotografía. Pero todo eso no evita que en un momento determinado sea traicionada de la peor forma posible. Por ello, intentará descubrirse así misma por medio de su apasionante pasado, en el cual tienen mucha importancia las brutales pesadillas que siempre la han acompañado.

Sin duda alguna, lo mejor de esta lectura ha sido como me ha reconciliado en buena parte con “Hija de la Fortuna”. Fue ese un libro que me encantó durante prácticamente toda la lectura, y que disfruté mucho… Hasta sus últimas páginas, que me pareció que nos mostraban un final muy precipitado y que dejaba muchas cosas al aire. Y eso le quitó muchos puntos al libro para mí y me decepcionó bastante. Por eso, encontrarme con que “Retrato en Sepia” es una continuación directa que recoge todos esos y los sueltos y le daba un final cerrado a la historia de Eliza Sommers y Tao Chi'en enfocada en los Del Valle fue una gran alegría para mí, ya que Allende los daba lo que creo que muchos lectores pedíamos.

Este es el cuarto libro que leo de Isabel Allende, y cada vez tengo más claro que quiero leer toda la bibliografía de esta autora. Es que es coger un libro de ella e inmediatamente ya estoy dentro de la historia y fascinada por su forma de narrar. Recuerdo que en su momento “La Casa de los Espíritus” se me hizo un tanto farragosa de leer, pero hoy por hoy conecto mucho con la pluma de la autora chilena, me parece que escribe de una manera muy bonita y me he reconciliado de buena gana, con sus párrafos interminables y sus frases llenas de giros de léxico y florituras, y la leo como si me bebiera un vaso de agua, y con gran gusto. Porque me parece que tiene una forma de escribir, muy especial, es e Teria, pero a la vez tiene frases terriblemente contundentes dentro de su lirismo, poética de una manera suave pero rotunda que conecta muy bien con el lector y sabe desplegar ante él los retratos psicológicos de sus personajes con mucho colorido y precisión. Quizás en esta ocasión eso de que el libro que nos ocupa esté dividido en tres partes muy largas, a veces ha hecho que la lectura sea un poco más cansada. Y me encanta la manera en que desarrolla la historia, centrándose tanto en los personajes y en los pequeños detalles y anécdotas de sus biografías, lo que contribuye también a que te metas de lleno en la historia.

De todas maneras, si hay algo que me ha escamado mientras leía era la falta de argumento propiamente dicho. Es decir, a lo largo de las poco más de 300 y pico páginas que componen el libro no paran de suceder cosas, hay todo tipo de relaciones que se van forjando, aparecen y desaparecen muchos personajes. Y hay mucho de lo que vulgarmente podríamos llamar salseo. Allende compone una historia en la que sean aúnan la historia de Chile y una trepidante crónica familiar, sazonada de mujeres llenas de carácter, romance, aventuras y mucha pasión. Pero aún así, me ha faltado que haya un hilo conductor de toda la historia más allá de hilar entre si lo que se contaba en las dos primeras entregas publicadas de la trilogía. Quizás, esto podría ser como Allende, nos va hablando de las diferentes guerras que en las que Chile se vio envuelto a finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, y que configuraron la historia del país. Porque si de algo puede enorgullecerse “Retrato en Sepia” es de ser un canto de amor hacia la tierra natal de Allende, que se solaza en las descripciones naturales de un país lleno de contrastes y bellezas, tan hermoso como Osco, y como se centra en la descripción psicologica de un pueblo, orgulloso, fiero, seguro de sí mismo que en los momentos de la narración se estaba empezando a forjar como nación. Si “Hija de la Fortuna” fue un canto a la creación de la identidad multicultural y basada en la creación y el esfuerzo personal de los futuros Estados Unidos de América, y a la manera prqcticamente suicida en que muchas personas se lanzaron en post del oro y de un futuro incierto, aprobar fortuna y pasaron por mil privaciones; “Retrato en Sepia” es una oda a la afirmación nacional de Chile, que nos explica muchas de las cosas que han dado pie a los acontecimientos que actualmente suceden en este país o que se han dado en su historia más reciente, y que explican mucho sobre lo que supone esta nación en América Latina.

Por lo demás, ya os he dicho que siento que este libro es más para cerrar el anterior de la trilogía que otra cosa. Que yo lo agradezco, pero me ha faltado que la trama tuviera algo más de potencia. El personaje de Aurora me ha parecido bastante insustancial, y en muchos momentos muy plano. La he percibido más como un hilo conductor que conecta las aventuras y desventuras de Paulina, Severo y Nivea con las de Eliza que otra. De hecho, cuando cualquiera de estos personajes aparece entre las páginas de la novela son los que se llevan por sí mismos toda la atención y los que tienen un trayecto vital, mucho más interesante que el de Aurora. Incluso otros personajes que aparecen por primera vez entre estas líneas como el del mayordomo William resulta mucho más entretenidos e interesantes, que la que se supone que es la propia protagonista del libro. De todas formas, hay algo que debo reconocerle a Aurora y es que a nivel emocional representa muy bien el que creo que es uno de los motores más importantes de la obra, que es la búsqueda de la identidad personal, el descubrimiento de los secretos de tu pasado y la importancia de tus raíces para poder entender mejor qué clase de persona eres y que te ha llevado a tu presente.

Es más, si me lo preguntáis para mí la gran protagonista de la novela no es otra que la formidable Paulina del Valle , una más de esa galería de mujeres poderosas y llenas de rabiosa, personalidad que salen de la pluma de Allende, y que por sí mismas hacen que la trama se mueva, lo ponen todo patas arriba y se hacen gracias a su propia fuerza e inteligencia, a puro zarpazos, su hueco en el mundo. Paulina me ha parecido un personaje apoteósico y lleno de contrastes, tan inteligente, segura de sí misma y decidida a que se haga lo que ella quiere que sería muy fácil de odiar, pero que tiene algo a la vez tan humano y vulnerable que es imposible cogerle ojeriza. es un personaje grandioso en todos los sentidos, y Allende se nota que disfruta y dedicándole páginas y páginas. De hecho, es ella a la que más tiempo se le dedica dentro de la novela. Le siguen de cerca la pareja formada por sus familiares Severo y Nívea, que ciertamente son muy importantes al principio de la obra, pero que poco a poco pasan a convertirse en secundarios de la historia. Lo cual no quita importancia al impacto que tiene, y al hecho de ser, como he dicho antes, los antecesores de esa estirpe femenina que protagoniza “La Casa de los Espíritus”. He disfrutado mucho de las menciones que se hace hacia esta obra y estos guiños para mí ha sido una de las partes que más he disfrutado de la lectura. Y ha sido muy interesante conocer mejor a estos dos personajes, especialmente a Nívea, que ya en el otro libro prometía mucho y en esta ocasión deja claro el porqué (solo una mujer así podría ser la madre de Clara, así os lo digo). en cambio, me he sentido un poco decepcionada por el paso que han tenido en la historia la pareja formada por Eliza Sommers y Tao Chi'en. Al principio de la novela sí que tienen un peso fundamental en la trama, y se desarrolla de una manera muy acertada todo lo que pasó con ellos después de “Hija de la Fortuna”. Para que, de pronto, en un trágico giro de los acontecimientos acaben evaporándose hasta prácticamente el final de la obra. Me hubiera gustado que de alguna forma hubieran tenido más peso en lo que es toda la parte central del libro, que es verdad que tienen una influencia importante, pero lo que es un peso Concreto no lo tienen, y eso lo he echado mucho en falta.

“La Casa de los Espíritus” era la narrativa de unas mujeres que degeneración a generación estaban unidas por una red de sororidad y fuerza, que era pasada por unas a otras, en medio de un mundo marcado por el devenir político y por una figura masculina que era el eje alrededor del cual se movían las biografías de estas mujeres. “Retrato en Sepia” en compañía de “Hija de la Fortuna” recoge este testigo, pues no se puede entender una de estas novelas sin la otra, ya que las dos forman un todo que acompaña a la historia de las mujeres del Valle. Y juntas, las tres novelas, nos hablan de un legado de mujeres fuertes y decididas que se ponen el mundo por montera cuando es necesario, de la necesidad de luchar por la libertad, y por lo que uno quiere ser, de la pasión y del derecho de explorar la vida con todos sus matices. son obras potentemente feministas, que a la vez constituyen un canto de amor hacia un país complejo, tanto en su geografía como en su población, y que buscan explicar de una manera poética y poderosa su historia y como ésta ha configurado su situación nacional y política. Quizás la tercera entrega no me haya conquistado tanto como las dos anteriores, pero ha tenido muchos momentos y personajes que me han encantado, y he disfrutado de la estupenda pluma de Isabel Allende, que en un futuro espero seguir explorando más.

Audiobook narrated by Blair Brown

This is the third book Allende has written about the Del Valle family. Though it was the last published, in chronological order it falls between Daughter of Fortune and The House of the Spirits, but can easily be read as a standalone novel. The sweeping scope of this book takes us from mid 19th-century San Francisco to early 20th century Chile, and is narrated by Aurora Del Valle, a fiercely independent woman who followed her own destiny regardless of convention.

I love Allende’s writing. There is a decidedly Latin beat to the flow of her sentences. And her descriptions are full of sensory highlights – the reader smells the sea air, feels the quality of fine fabrics, suffers in the tropical heat, hears the cacophony of a busy marketplace, and tastes the herbs and spices of Chinese or Chilean cuisine.

The characters are larger than life and run the gamut from a wealthy Chilean grand dame to a Chinese herbalist to an English butler and a Serbian physician. I greatly appreciated the family tree printed in the text version, and wished that I also had a map handy to help with the geography.

While she is known for magical realism, there is little of that in this book, aside from a reference to the ghost of Aurora’s grandfather being ever present. I think I need to go back to The House of the Spirits and read it again….

Blair Brown does a fine job performing the audio version. She has good pacing and enough skill as a voice artist to clearly distinguish the many characters.

Superb storytelling! Rich narrative!
If the translation was this good, then I can only imagine that in Spanish, the original language, must be even better.
The storyline is set between 1862 to 1910 and we travel between Europe, South and North America, but mostly set in Chile.
The book is divided into 3 parts and there are no chapters, but there breaks.
The development of the story was fascinating, rich with cultures and strong characters.
But I did think that the author packed with too many topics, hence my ratings.
Regardless, this was still a very interesting story.
My favourite of this trilogy is “The House of the Spirits”, which was published first. This one and the other, “Daughter of Fortune”, are prequels.
