Heather Amery was born and brought up in Bath, Somerset. Heather has written over a hundred books for children, including alphabet books, science and history books, craft books, classical fairy tales, a series for beginner readers called Farmyard Tales, Usborne Bible Tales, and Greek Myths.
Usborne is known to have quality educational books, and this certainly fits the bill. The book starts off with an interesting device about a time traveling helmet and its functions. Weirdly tho, after the 3rd page, there is no further mention of the reader/time traveler or the time helmet. Not sure if this is part of a series where the helmet has a purpose, or if it’s just an idea that petered out quickly.
The book itself is full of pictures with brief explanatory text for each pair of pages. The pictures have labels and a few words identifying people or items of interest. The story follows Petronius and his family and their lives in Rome. Drawings cover home, school, shopping, the baths, and several other interesting/popular scenarios. The end of the book covers the end of the empire, and a short history of Rome from founding to fall.
