Revisiting this book trilogy (and the acompanying video games) as audio-books. I revisited a lot of other "Legends"-books before as well, those at the end of the Fate Of The Galaxy time-line, books like Crucible. I also revisited I, Jedi (which plays out at the same time as this Jedi Academy Trilogy but was released about 4 years later).
"Star Wars: The Jedi Academy Trilogy is a book trilogy written by Kevin J. Anderson and published by Bantam Spectra from March 1994 to October of the same year. The novels are Jedi Search, Dark Apprentice, and Champions of the Force.
The books tell the story of Luke Skywalker's attempt to resurrect the Jedi Order on Yavin 4, and his search for possible Jedi candidates.
There are several stories told throughout the three books. The main plot is that of Exar Kun's spirit attempting to turn Luke's trainee Jedi, he kills one of them and turns Kyp Durron who goes on a rampage with the Sun Crusher. The Jedi trainees eventually destroy Kun and Kyp is brought back to the light by his friend Han Solo."
What you have to know (if you have already finished I, Jedi or not yet) is that there are quite a few inconsistencies and retcons, I will copy/paste a few of them here as they do not spoil too much of the story (for the Jedi Academy Trilogy):
"Continuity: the later novel I, Jedi was a retcon of much of the action at the Jedi academy, inserting Corran Horn into the storyline and smoothing out parts that did not conform to later continuity."
and (for I, Jedi)
"Continuity: in the first chapter, the luxury cruise liner is referred to as the Glitterstar, but in the second chapter, the same ship is called the Glimmerstar multiple times. In chapter 32, Chempat Engineered Defenses is misspelled as Chepat, and in chapter 36, warlord Blitzer Harrsk is misspelled as Harssk.
When Corran Horn deliberately mixes up the names of the Red Squadron pilots who destroyed the first Death Star so as to appear ill-informed about the Rebellion, he names one "Luke Starkiller." This was the name of Luke Skywalker in the second and third drafts of the Star Wars screenplay. The novel's cover art depicts an X-wing starfighter on the bottom right corner missing its upper right laser cannon.
I, Jedi is one of the few Star Wars novels that fully retcons events in another novel. I, Jedi and the Jedi Academy Trilogy have chapters that occurred simultaneously and told the same story from different vantage points. The Jedi Academy Trilogy described in detail only a few members of Luke's initial class of Jedi apprentices, leaving room for the anonymous few to be filled in afterward. In this case, the chain of events surrounding the early days of the Jedi Academy and Exar Kun's incapacitation of Luke Skywalker were altered to include Horn, who was not yet developed when the trilogy was published in 1995."
