A delightful new series introducing the ladies of the Mayfair Literary League from USA Today Bestselling Author Lana Williams. The series has charmingly spirited heroines with a love of books, dashing rogues, humor, steamy kisses, and twists you might not see coming.

4 1/2*STARS* Lady Phoebe Fitzroy is the leader of The Mayfair Literary League. Together the ladies discuss books, politics and the charities they sponsor. Still unwed after several seasons, the threat of her father's choice in a husband gives Phoebe the idea for a new agenda, FOR BETTER OR WORSE. Phoebe decides to be the first to step forward to pursue the man who holds her heart. She proposes a marriage of convenience to Anthony Stanhope, the Earl of Bolton, even as her heart says she loves him. When he refuses, she gives him a list of why she would make a good wife. Anthony isn't ready for marriage, but he can't get Phoebe and her list off his mind. Her bold move makes an impression on Anthony. He is suddenly in pursuit of Phoebe and those heated kisses keep getting hotter. It's a bumpy road to happiness. Heat Level 3 I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
What a great start to a very entertaining series. I was thrilled with this book! I cannot say enough good things about this book.
Lady Phoebe Fitzroy is the head of The Mayfair Literary League. She and her fellow members discuss books, politics, current affairs, and other topics that are very unladylike! Still after several seasons they are unmarried and close to excepting that they will remain so. How does Lady Phoebe propose that they fix this? How does one get their crush to notice them, in a romantic way instead of just a friend of many years?
Can’t wait for the rest of the series! Lana Williams has added some wonderfully entertaining characters, I’m excited to see which of the Mayfair Literary League will be next in the series! This has become one of my favorite books of hers! What a home run! When will the next book be out?
As a long time fan of Williams, it’s an honor to review her work and speak honestly about the stories she tells. I went in a little blind about the story—the best way to be imo—and left utterly tickled pink.
LOVED this book.
What would you do to change your fate? Would you try to tell your secret crush how you felt? Would you be bold? Could you put yourself out there?
This book answers these questions in the best of ways by showcasing the good, the bad, and the exciting of embracing vulnerability and going after your heart’s desire.
Can’t wait for the rest of the series either. Williams sprinkled in some interesting characters, which had me thinking about who’d end up with who and how all of them would be bold enough to go after their crushes. (WHEN DOES THE NEXT BOOK COME OUT??)
One of Williams best.

Lady Phoebe Fitzroy is the leader of the Mayfair Literary League, a book club made up of 6 ladies that have endured at least five seasons and remain unwed. Phoebe has turned down at least three proposals over the years and she knows that her parents are getting impatient with her, but they don’t know that Phoebe has a groom in mind, Anthony Stanhope, the Earl of Bolton, but unfortunately he doesn’t seem to see her as anything more than his sister’s friend. So Phoebe decides enough is enough, she needs to be bold and encourages her fellow league members to follow her lead and take their fate into their own hands – she calls her initiative the “For Better or Worse” agenda and promises to report her progress at their next meeting. Armed with a list of reasons they would make a good couple, Phoebe visits Bolton House to propose a marriage of convenience to Anthony.
Anthony is flabbergasted when Phoebe proposes a marriage of convenience, Anthony wants to marry for love or not at all, and even that is not something he is pursuing until he sees his younger siblings settled. He politely and gently declines her proposal, yet keeps her list. And for some reason he can’t explain, he can’t stop thinking of her. When he sees her a few days later at a ball, he asks her to dance, and later takes her for some air on the terrace, where he ends up kissing her and is shocked at the connection he feels. Did he make a mistake by not accepting her proposal? But then he remembers that she mentioned nothing of feelings for him, only practical reasons they would be good together and after witnessing his father and mother’s forced marriage, there is no way he would chance marriage without a love connection. He tells himself that he needs to leave her alone, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans…
This was a well-written, nicely paced, absolutely charming story with very likable characters and the setup for more delightful stories to follow when the other ladies from the Mayfair Literary League perform their own “bold acts”. This book has a friends-to-lovers trope, unspoken feelings, stolen kisses, compromising situations, more kissing, a villain bent on revenge, wagers, misunderstandings, and finally a HEA complete with an epilogue set years later. I am happy to recommend this title, it was a great read, it is the first book in a new series and I am already counting the days until the next one releases!
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*
A sweet start to what promises to be a fun series!
When Phoebe decides that her ladies' literary league needs a new challenge--for each member to take at least one bold step toward changing their own futures (ie to finding an HEA for themselves, to attract the attention of their crushes)--it's commendable that she decides she's going to go first. She even knows who she's interested in--Anthony Stanhope, the first man she ever danced with and a family friend--and what she's going to do about it--propose a marriage of convenience to him. But Anthony's never looked at her that way, and his own parents' disaster of a marriage has left him determined to wait for true love to come along, not marry the first...well, woman to ask him wasn't on his bingo card for the year, so he's rather taken aback at her proposal, his once orderly life now seeming to spin out of his control, somehow..
But of course he saves the list of reasons that Phoebe gave him of why her idea was a good one, and of course he reads it over and over again. Actually, now that Phoebe's placed herself front and center in his mind, he cannot stop thinking about her. Or asking her to dance. Or--oops!--kissing her in secluded corners. But he has to marry for love! Eventually!
This was a cute read, and it did make me chuckle more than once. The two main characters were both extremely likable, if aggravatingly obtuse at times, and it was easy to want to see them together for real. Their journey to HEA kept me turning the pages, and though things went a teensy bit off the rails toward the end, this was a satisfying read. I'll be anxiously waiting to see how the other women in the group decide to take up the challenge issued by Phoebe!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I can't say enough about this book to give it enough justice. Because its just that good.. Lana deserves a triple 5 star on this one.
Here's my summary.
She wants to prove to her fellow literary members that doing a bold act is the way to go in getting the attention of the man you have always wanted even though he doesn't even see you.
So she proposes a marriage of convenience however he turns her down flat out because he has to see his siblings married first. But she will soon find that not only did she get his attention but she got his heart.
He never thought about marrying anyone much less his sister's friend. But however after her proposal he can't stop thinking about her, her curves and her hazel eyes and the way she makes him feel.
After a few stolen kisses they both realize its not a matter of convenience any longer its a matter of love.
I definitely look forward to the rest of the series.
I received this a gift from the author in exchange for an honest review and these are purely my thoughts and opinions.

Lovely Start to a New Series The ladies of the Mayfair Literary League have all had several unsuccessful seasons. When Phoebe discovers that she is not the only lady to have a tendre for a gentleman who never notices her, she comes up with a For Better or Worse Agenda. Far better to have attempted, with a bold act, to get the gentleman in question to see them in a different light, than never to have tried at all. There is only one caveat and that is not to compromise the gentleman in question. From the start Phoebe’s bold act does not go to plan…. Cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
For Better or Worse or “Action over Regret” I had the pleasure to read in advance this well written book with the beautiful cover. It tells the story of the troubles of young people with relationships, a story probably as old as mankind! It is entertaining, often amusing and sometimes steamy and my special feelings are for Phoebe, the heroine. Her advice “action over regret” has certainly value as long as we live - I know of what I am talking (I am closer to 100 than to 50) 😊 I also loved the supportive relationship among the “book ladies” and I got the impression that the authoress is very fond of her characters something I very much appreciate!
This new series is off to a great start! I thoroughly enjoyed the first book. It has so many of my favorite things from a book club with an interesting group of women friends to handsome rogues to steamy interludes. In this story, Phoebe decides she wants to help her secret crush see her in a whole new light. What better way to involve her friends from the literary league than to get them to make moves of their own as well? Phoebe sends Anthony's world into a tailspin, and it's a delight to watch. He doesn't know what hit him and can't get Phoebe out of his mind. The scene where he has to make his own bold move is one of my favorites! I can't wait to see which of the wonderful ladies in the league gets her story next. So much fun!
Superb start to the series, I loved the characters and thoroughly enjoyed it. An engaging story, with tantalising hints for future books to follow. As usual, Lana Williams never fails to delight.
Great start to the new series The Mayfair Literary League! I loved the ladies of the League and I can't wait to read all of their stories. Phoebe and Anthony were very entertaining and had such witty banter. Really all of the characters were entertaining. I feel so much when I'm reading a story about someone who doesn't think they can find love but then they do. Love it! It did lead to a late night of reading because I didn't want to put it down but that is always fun.
I loved the spirit and guts of the h and this promises to be a great series. I loved the other ladies who are part of the league and can't wait for to see what their tenacity will bring to their stories.
The H is ridged in how he handles things, especially where it concerns his siblings. But, the h takes matters into her own hands and sets in motion the new theme of the League.
Some minor hiccups along the way but nothing that was drawn out forever - thankfully.
Only passionate kisses and a touch of fondling prior to marriage. Within marriage - heat level 3+ out of 5. It was filled with passion and love.
I enjoyed the epilogue 20 years in the future. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic and tad of spice. I can't improve on the blurb just giving you some tidbits to decide to read it, which I recommend.
I received an ARC, all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)

Will he be able to see who she is before it is too late…
Phoebe is so easy to love, she refuses to let fate leave her with regrets why she takes matter in her own hands, even if she does not handle it perfectly, she at least tried. After years on the marriage mart, she hears the clock tickling, with less and less option in front of her, even if in her heart there has only been one, her friend’s older brother. Anthony never really thought anything special about Phoebe, only one of his sisters’ friend. But her proposal opens his eyes unexpectedly. Now his eyes have been opened, he sees her, really her, not the overlooked less fashionable lady.
For there begins a courting non-courting sort of friendship that permits him to explore what could be. A lovely read of her lady bold enough to try to reach for her heart desires. 4.5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
I am delighted with this new series. The Mayfair Literary League proves to be a compelling group of young ladies embracing boldness to secure their heart’s desire. Basically, convincing blind foolish Lords that what they’re looking for has been in front of them the whole time. Men can be so daft, it’s no wonder they feel the need to beat them over the head with their affection. This first book is our fearless leader and League creator, Phoebe who has been in love with Anthony for 7 years but she is relegated to the invisible status of his sister’s friend. She becomes increasingly visible after proposing a marriage of convenience, though he rejects her offer, his eyes are now open and he finds himself drawn to her incessantly. Phoebe’s cool composure after their first kiss was pure kharmic justice as far as I’m concerned. He is baffled by her lack of response when his world is now completely tilted. Their relationship continues in the does he-does she format with delightful angst and longing. The cherry on the cake was what I’m referring to as the sibling revolution, where his brother informs him of the blatantly obvious, she’s always loved him and then her sister pushes him to make his own bold moves. These two scenes were cheer worthy! The whole story unfolds in a page-turner pace that I did not want to put down. I cannot wait for the book loving soon-to-be spinster antics.
This is the first book in The Mayfair Literary League series. The characters are well drawn, the book is well written and the story is engrossing; however, the writer does use Americanisms that are not used in England today and were certainly not used in England in the late 19th Century - they are infrequent so don’t jar too much.
It would have been a 5* if the hero, Anthony, didn’t vacillate so much, and didn’t humiliate the heroine, in front of a Ballroom full of onlookers, then walk away leaving her to deal with the fallout - although he does redeem himself later in the book. I also wanted to shake the heroine, Phoebe, she is supposedly a strong and decisive woman but turns to mush when confronted by detractors, and allows Anthony to ‘take liberties’ when he has told her he is not interested in marrying her - has she no self respect!
There are some passionate passages (kisses and fondling) with only one full sex passage, which took place on their honeymoon. It’s around the middle mark for steam.
Despite a few negatives, I found the book entertaining and the epilogue is extremely satisfying, going 20 years into the future. I will be reading the next in the series.
I have been a fan of Lana Williams for quite a while. Her books are well written and well edited. Her characters consistently catch my interest and this book is no exception.
Lady Phoebe Fitzroy, with a small group of her friends, has formed the Mayfair Literary League. They discuss the book they have chosen to read and anything else that has captured their interest as well as do good works. Phoebe has challenged the members of the League to take a bold step to make the gentleman who has captured their interest, and perhaps their heart, see them in another light. Phoebe volunteers to go first.
Phoebe’s interest lies in a gentleman named Anthony Stanhope, brother to a friend of hers. She has decided that her best course of action is to propose a marriage of convenience to Anthony. She even hands him a list of reasons why she believes they would suit. Unfortunately for Phoebe, Anthony declines. She is crushed. But she has most certainly captured his attention! It is worth the read to learn about the rest of their story.
This story is a gem. I’m not usually a fan of Historical Romances set during the Victorian period, but I really enjoyed this one. The story and characters are rich and yet relatable. The theme is being bold and taking your life into your own hands (unusual for a female of the time). I love the concept and the execution. Anthony and Pheobe are such interesting, intriguing, captivating, relatable characters. I enjoyed as Anthony went from seeing Phoebe as his sister’s friend to a desirable female. The side characters added to the fabric of the story. I wish we had gotten a better understand and outcome for the behaviour of a few of the secondary characters.
I received this book as part of a giveaway from the author. I voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Everything about this book hints at an intelligent woman who wants more for herself. Why then, does she lose all common sense at the first sign of sex?? This isn't amusing. So many women were ruined by this exact scenario while the dickhead gets to go on with his life as if nothing happened. And she falls for THAT? Am I expected to cheer her on because he makes zero promises but still gets his milk for free. Lost all respect for her in that moment because the author is making a mockery of the exact thing that stole power from women in that Era.
The author did such a good job of characterization and storytelling, I downloaded the next two in the series when I finished. The story is well-written, the pace is just right and the ending is satisfying. I loved the interactions between the two main characters as they struggled to come to terms with their individual actions. While it is predictable, it is none-the-less an enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.
A delightful novel! The Mayfair Literary League, such a well meaning book club for young ladies! This intriguing novel has just the right amount of action, romance, dialogue and tendre to keep the reader's interest. Go along on this fantastic journey with Anthony, Phoebe, and their families as they all explore matters of the heart.
I loved it. Couldn't put it down. I was eager to find out how things would progress. Sometimes all it takes is a little courage and honesty to bring an 'ugly duckling' to the attention of her handsome but distracted prince. I can't wait to see what happens with the other members of the Literary League.
The wallflower no more. Phone had fallen in love with Anthony years ago but she was never on his radar so she took things into her own hands. Sting yet shy Phones started a book club and proposed to her club to take chances on love. Fun read and good characters I enjoyed it
Absolutely delightful love story, this is a new author for me I will definitely read more of her books , this is a great series, can’t wait to read the next book
Oh dear, I bought it before checking my previous reads - not the author or me. Surfeit of talking versus action - making it a tedious read. I finished it only because I paid for it.
Wonderful reading and time well spent enjoying Phoebe & Anthony's tale of finding everlasting love.
I love reading Lana Williams' books. They are most entertaining, keeping me glued to each story she's published like few other author's can do. I feel like I am a part of Phoebe and Anthony's life as they fall in love and can share in their happiness with them and 'The Mayfair Literary League ' as 'A Matter of Convenience'.
