A first-generation American daughter of Brits from either end of London, Sydney resides in Massachusetts with her family -- human, feline, and canine. The rest of her extended family live in the U.K. where she spent many happy childhood summers. She loves shandy, Maltesers, Cadbury bars, fish and chips, and anything from Harrod's food hall or in a Fortnum and Mason's basket.

Typical "contrary lady finds handsome man, does some non-romance stuff but then they fall in love along way the way" story. With a touch of "women don't have rights, but this one guy is made to respect her and treat her like an equal" type thing.
If there is originality here, I have yet to see it.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this story, and this is my freely given opinion.
This is book 4 of the Diamonds of the First Water series and about third sister Radiance. She has a love of gem stones and a desire to learn how to work with them and precious metals to make jewelry and as part of her desire to learn, she has apprenticed herself to a noted jewelry and goes to various lectures to learn more.
Edward Lockwood is a noted geology expert and scholar and Radiance meets him at one of his lectures. They are from different classes, with her being the daughter of an Earl, with wealth and social power. They appear to have different personalities as well, with him being a focused scholar who seems rather befuddled about other things such as social niceties, and other things he does not deem important.
But between his expert knowledge on stones, and Radiance's keen eye, they are both drawn into mystery involving the theft of noted jewels belonging to Queen Victoria's collection and their replacement with fraudulent stones.
Initially I found that Radiance and Edward did not strike me as a couple that worked well together. They seemed quite different and Edward was very cold and standoffish with her. He seemed not willing to take her seriously and was dismissive. I put off reading this for a bit because I did not feel any spark. But then I picked it up again and I was rather taken by the information and history of some of the crown jewels and how they and the royal couple of the time, Victoria and Albert, were woven into the story. The entire mystery and how the couple worked at it was and interesting part of the storyline, and I found myself enjoying that more than the romance. But it did act as a tool and foil for showing Edward how intelligent and capable Radiance was and helped develop his respect of her and of course making them work together, and building their relationship.
I can't help but think that while Radiance may find Edward's absentmindedness charming and endearing now, it would probably drive her crazy in the future.
This is my 16th book by Sydney Jane Baily. I have been reading her since 2019. I normally really like her books and I had really loved the other Diamonds in this series but something about this book I just couldn't get into it. Very weird!
Not sure what it was, but I just wasn't feeling the couple like I normally do. I was just reading to read. Radiance and Edward were so boring. Their story was boring, they were boring...just a weird read. I usually read a book a day and I was reading this one for 3 days and still only at 45%. UGH! That is obviously not normal. It was KU so just returned at 45%. I just couldn't invest any more of my time.
4 1/2*STARS* Radiance Diamond studies jewelry making for her own benefit. It's not a job, it's a craft she loves. Mr. Edward Lockwood would be your absentminded professor. A respected geologist, he's known for his travels, lectures and knowledge of stones. Jewels are missing from Queen Victoria's possessions. Radiance and Edward are charged by the Queen, her Prince and the Queen's Crown Jeweler to find them. And then there is the Koh-i-Noor. A Victorian mystery romance. Kissing with a little touch. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this.
Reading the story it was a little hard to get through. The stories plot was based all around being a gemologist and trying not to offend friends as you reticule their jewelry that they wear. I looked for the excitement and the entertainment. Something to get me to believe that this book will pickup and be that page turner. The book shows the writer’s abilities of researching for her book. The writer is very capable of writing a story that flows easily for the reader. The story has fine details that describe people, places, and things with clarity. This outline provided me a good visual of the story. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.
Lady Radiance Diamond has heard all of the quips about her name, and though she doesn't like the comparison with the gem, she is enthralled by stones of all types. Wanting to work with jewellery, she has been lucky to find an apprenticeship, and knows more than most about how to handle, and work with precious stones. So when she hears a renowned jeweller, Edward Lockwood, and realises that the Hope Diamond he has in his possession is a fake, they form a partnership that takes them to the very top. Some of Queen Victoria's favourite pieces have been swapped with fakes, and she tasks Edward and Radiance with the job to discover who is behind it, and stop them. As Edward realises that Radiance is not someone to underestimate, she finds love in quite the unexpected place.
Well, I really liked this one, a lot more than I was expecting. After the previous books, I found them a little lacklustre, and didn't see how the series could really improve. However, with Radiance and Edward at the helm, and the plot line being such an engrossing one, I was hooked. I liked that Radiance was stepping out from her box, and putting herself, and her brain, out there. She was more than the daughter of an Earl, and she wasn't happy staying at home. Yes, Edward underestimated her to begin with, but soon he saw the true Radiance, and he loved her. He embraced her expertise and brilliance, and supported her at every turn. I liked that the Queen was a part of the story line, and am now hopeful for the final book in the series to be as enjoyable as this one!
This is the 4th book in a series, but could be read as a standalone. This is the first book I've read in the series and the first book by this author. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the historically accurate facts woven into this story and it moved along at a fast pace. I liked the main characters and they were well developed.
I took one star off because toward the end of the book there were a lot of twists. Most of them worked but it seemed like there was one too many. It took me out of the story and felt ridiculous.
Overall I enjoyed this book and will be reading other books by this author.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
And the fourth Diamond finds love. Radiance has a hobby that has become her passion, the fine art of jewelry making. Attending lectures on the topics of gemstones her path crosses that of the lecturer Edward Lockwood. Although his handsomeness is very distracting, Edward is more focus on his gems than the beauty sitting front and center in the lecture hall, but she is unforgettable and keeps sneaking into his thoughts. When a command audience to see the Queen has them working together to solve a mystery surrounding not one but two fake gems found with the Royal jewels. The close working conditions has the spark bursting into a flame. Love the development of the characters. Edward with his absentmindedness and Radiance with her determination to not be excluded. Thank you NetGalley for this eARC. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story. #NetGalley #Radiance #WolfPublishing
This is the first book I have read by Sydney Jane Baily, and overall, I would say that at its heart, it is a cute love story between an "absent-minded professor" of geology, Edward Lockwood, and an earl's daughter, Lady Radiance Diamond, who has an interest in gemstones and jewelry-making. Radiance's siblings' stories make up the other books in the series, but I didn't feel lost not having read about her older siblings, Clarity, Purity and Adam. The Diamonds are a close-knit clan, and Baily does a good job of fleshing out these familial relationships while filling in some backstory for the other romances in this series, which I appreciated. Both Edward and Radiance are likable characters, and I liked that Radiance is portrayed as confident and intelligent, a young woman who is taken seriously by Edward, other jewelers (all of them men) and by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who feature in the book quite significantly.
What I struggled with was the length of this book - even the author calls it a long story in her Acknowledgments section at the end, and the tale is a bit meandering, somewhat slow-moving, occasionally tangential. There were parts of this story which I think could have been condensed or edited out in order to make it a tighter, more focused read. I found myself putting the story down quite a bit, even though I enjoyed the characters. Unfortunately, it was not a page-turner for me. It does have a happy ending, and I was glad to see Radiance maintain her independence and for Edward to be open-minded and supportive when it came to Radiance following her own dreams and working, even as a titled lady.
It was also hard to get a handle on whether this was meant to be a steamy romance or a closed door romance, and occasionally it felt like the author was only comfortable portraying their intimacy up to a point and then would stop altogether. Edward and Radiance pine for more physical intimacy with each other throughout the book, and the author starts out providing some details of their intimacy but then it quickly fades to black. To me, it felt uneven, and I would have preferred that the author either went there full-tilt with the intimacy or not at all. As it stands, she straddles the fence between being a sweet (or clean) historical romance and a steamier one. This middle zone didn't really work for me; it became too much telling the reader about Edward and Radiance's growing love rather than showing us their developing relationship.
All in all, it was a sweet read, and I enjoyed learning about the various gems. I liked that there was a caper, with the two MC's working together as a team, which drew them closer, but in my opinion, it was too long a story, too drawn out and too uneven in its plot. It was well-written text-wise but felt a bit tepid at times. For readers who have read the other books in the series and enjoyed them, this may be right up your alley. For me, unfortunately, it was a miss, and I'm not drawn to read other books in this series currently.
I received this book as an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review of it. All opinions expressed herein are my own.
This story is the 4th in the Diamonds of the First Water series by Sydney Jane Bailey. The series follows the five children of the Earl Diamond and his wife. We have already shared the stories of Clarity, Purity and Adam and followed their successful journeys to love and marriage.
This one focuses on Lady Radiance and her geologist George Edward Lockwood. As the story unfolds, in addition to the blossoming romance of Lady Radiance and Edward, you find a mystery that involves the gems of Queen Victoria. Edward and Radiance are pulled into an intriguing plot to steal the Queen’s jewels and are charged to find the source of the mystery and protect the crown. I loved the mystery plot and how it helped to move the story along with Edward and Radiance.
Ms. Bailey has created detailed and delightful characters who grow over the course of the story. Edward is focused on his rocks and is absentminded to all distractions including Radiance. Radiance is an intelligent, skilled and strong-willed character. She is not the simple debutante and is the lead to resolve the mystery. The dialog is well written, funny and includes the viewpoints of both characters. The main focus of the story is how to stand up with integrity, look forward with hope and love to the future with your family and their support.
This is a clean romance but does have some passionate passages. You find yourself rooting for Edward and Radiance to untangle the mystery and get their happy ever after! I highly recommend this story
4.5 Stars At Prince Albert’s Great Exhibition, Lady Radiance Diamond falls in love with gemstones! Jewellery-making becomes her passion. Edward Lockwood, a geologist has travelled the world, not afraid to scrabble in the muck if it means coming home with precious stones. Charged by Queen Victoria with a most delicate undertaking, he’s bemused to be partnered with a fiery-haired, quick-witted earl’s daughter. With the royal mission growing ever more perilous, Edward keeps his focus on sparkling emeralds but Radiance wasn’t bred to be ignored or to step aside. Radiance is the fourth Diamond sibling to find love, this book is easily read on its own but the Diamonds are an entertaining family. Another well written interesting read which delved into the world of precious gems. I loved the verbal banter between Edward & Radiance, which started at their first meeting. He’s the forgetful expert who becomes so engrossed in his work that he's oblivious to the outside world, she's the intelligent earl's daughter who has a talent for crafting jewellery. I loved how their relationship changed & grew, things didn’t go smoothly but it was entertaining. There's also the mystery surrounding the task the Queen gives them. Not a short book by any means but just when the pace seemed to slow it was picked up again. I would have liked an author’s note about the jewellery trade My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
4 1/2 stars. This is the best entry in the series, and one of my favorite books by this author. I enjoyed both of the MC's and the plot. Edward and Radiance are perfect together.
I have to give a special shout out to Edward, dashing but absentminded globe-trotter/academic, my book boyfriend for the next few days, at least. (Yes, be still my nerdy, Indiana-Jones-loving heart.)
The mystery is well-plotted, and the research and writing are top-notch. The dialog and mores are realistic for the time period.
I have just a few minor quibbles: for most of the book Edward felt that his station was too far below Radiance's--what made him change his mind? Also, the fact that Edward alone was put in charge of guarding the Hope diamond, not once but twice, is quite unrealistic (the plot twists clear up some of the reasoning, but still). Finally, I would have loved more on page-steam, at least after the wedding. Edward and Radiance had great chemistry.
OK, I just wanted more scenes with Edward disheveled, showing off his body. Is that so wrong?
Overall: this is an excellent addition to the series.
Radiance was probably my least favorite of Sydney Jane Baily's Diamonds of the First Water series thus far. I didn't like the MMC, Edward Lockwood. His constant forgetfulness and distractedness do not qualify as cute or sweet characteristics, IMHO. All I could think was that Radiance needed to run to someone more dependable.
Radiance herself comes across a little contrived. Her insta-love for Edward makes little sense for someone who is seemingly fairly strong on her own. She also sometimes seems rather disapproving of Edward's absentmindedness in a way that points to potential resentment down the road. I also didn't feel we had enough of his backstory to understand how he had the money and other resources that he did.
I also felt like the second layer of the mystery was more to fill pages than to truly add to the story. It did not hold my attention. Not Baily's strongest effort in my opinion. I will, however, still read Brilliance's book and other works by Baily.
2.5 stars rounded to 3. Thank you to NetGalley and WOLF for an ARC of this title. The opinions herein are my own.
This was a fun, entertaining and educational book with an original story and wonderful characters that kept me turning the pages. The basis of the story surrounds some of Queen Victoria's jewelry pieces being tampered with and jewels being replaced by faux gems. This mystery and the expertise of Mr. Edward Lockwood, Gemologist/Geologist and Lady Radiance Diamond's, passion and knowledge for gemology, geology and jewelry making; takes us into the intriguing world of London's jewelers.
This was a serious mystery and crime against the Crown, but the entertainment value of this couple was priceless. In the end, our villain is found, Edward and Radiance get their HEA, the Crown is pleased, and I learned some new things about jewels/jewelry in the Victorian era. My only negative would be the length of the book - I felt it dragged in some places and could have been shortened without loss of story details or character development, but it still deserved a resounding 5 Star rating! I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.
Sidney Jane Baily has added another delightful story to the Diamond series.
Radiance is the daughter of lord and lady Diamond, and the only one of her siblings that has a rich red hair like their mother. Radiance has a passion for jewelry making, this is not a wim, she has a good eye for detail, having read up on the subject, and is learning how to create her own jewelry from a jeweler. Her interest even leads her to go to lectures.
Edward Lockwood is an expert in gemstones, he quite besotted with them, he holds lectures on them and has even been on dig sites abroad in search for them.
During one of his lectures he encountered Lady Radiance, thinking of the audacity of a women coming to one of his lectures. That is until she demonstrates her knowledge of the subject.
These two wonderful characters are drawn together to identify counterfeit jewelry. This may bring them closer to each other and solving the crime.
I enjoyed reading the book and these are my own thoughts and views
If you believe that opposites do attract, you will enjoy this book. Lady Radiance Diamond is a beautiful lady, but she is interested in more than dancing and the Ton's versation of what a proper lady does. Radiance loves gemstones and learning to make jewelry. Edward Lockwood is a respected geologist and is so interested in gems that often he forgets to eat, keep appointments or even take note of his apperance. Their first meeting at a lecture goes a little off center for Edward as he has never met a lady who shows interest in gemstones and has questions and knowledge about them that are intelligent. When Radiance notices something odd about a gem that Edward displays, she will stop at nothing short of getting a better look at it to see if what she thinks is correct. This will lead them to be asked to come to the place to speak with Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert about two missing gems from the Queen's collection. If you enjoy mystery, intrigue, a villain or two and romance, then this story will keep your attention to the very end.
Although a bit long, Radiance is an entertaining read primarily due to the personalities of its lead characters, Lady Radiance Diamond and Mr. Edward Lockwood. They share similar interests, but their personalities are definitely different. So, of course, they are perfect together.
I really liked the heroine, but the hero was often a bit self absorbed, which is not to be confused with absentminded. The story would have been predictable, if not for the mysteries and the plot twists that the author, Sydney Jane Baily worked into the story. The dialogue and descriptions were very good , but there was a good bit of introspection, to the point of slowing the pace of the scenes.
All in all, this light read was enjoyable and the ending was satisfying.
Content 411: In addition to a few mild swear words, this book also contains some mild intimacy scenes.
Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from Wolf Publishing via BookFunnel. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
This is the fourth book of the delightful Diamonds of the First Water series. Radiance is the next Diamond sibling to find love. She finds her passion and joy in making jewelry. Edward is a respected geologist and known for his knowledge of gems and stones, and he is the one that catches Radiance's eye. When jewels from Queen Victoria's collection go missing, Edward and Radiance are called upon to find them. Working so closely together, they cannot deny the attraction they feel towards each other. The book has intrigue, drama, and romance, and it was easy to get pulled into the excitement of it all. The story was captivating and well-written and held my interest till the end. The characters were lovely and I instantly fell in love with them. Edward and Radiance were charming couple and had wonderful chemistry and I enjoyed the banter and interactions between them. I've really been enjoying this series and this was a delightful addition! Thank you to Wolf Publishing for providing a complimentary copy. This is my honest and voluntary opinion.
The Diamond’s never fail to delight! Radiance is a joy in her scholastic demeanour. Not a typical lady of the ton, Radiance has taken to gems and jewelry making in her passion. Learning all there is to know and even going so far as to learn from a master jeweller. This passion leads her to her geologist, Edward Lockwood. This unlikely pairing actually becomes something quite remarkable as they bond while investigating the Queen’s missing gems. The mystery and intrigue surrounding their association proves commanding as I could not put it down once the mystery truly unravelled. Edward is a man of singular influence, once his mind is set on a subject all else is forgotten. This makes for an interesting challenge for a Lady who happens to be falling for him. Despite his lack of focus, Radiance quickly overtakes his mind until she is all he sees. This is a lovely story told with great detail and attention to focus, much like its hero. Romantic and intriguing in a perfect blend.
Radiance, daughter number three of Lord Diamond, had a strong interest in geology, gemology and jewelry making. She met Edward at a lecture he was giving which included the Hope Diamond. Of course she was the only woman there, and he didn’t take her seriously, until she privately pointed out a major concern. This is a story wherein things are not always as they seem. You will find danger, misdirection, erroneous assumptions, and a whole lot of info regarding gems and jewelry. Edward is a man of contradictions, who swings from focused to forgetful in the blink of an eye. He is also a brilliant, strong, caring, hunk who thinks Radiance hung the moon. Radiance is a smart, perceptive and courageous woman whose heart won’t settle for anything less than love. This story will take you on an intriguing and emotional journey, filled with humor, tense moments and a few hot kisses
Better and Better! This series just keeps on getting better and better. I loved Radiance and her certainty and abilities. She comes across as a competent and loving young lady. Her lovely nature allows her to accept that which she cannot change but to also work towards the safety and well-being of others and their possessions. The other character I loved so much was Edward Lockhard, a renowned Gemologist. He is so very absent minded and I couldn’t help laughing at his forgetfulness and the way he seemed to live in a world of his own from time to time. They make a wonderful couple, complimenting each other in every way possible. This story is really well written and had me sitting on the edge of my seat every now and then. I am happy to recommend it. I read an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of the book and my voluntary review is recorded above.
This has to be one of the most adorable and hysterical story I have read in a while. I absolutely adored Edward, the bumbling Professor as he tried to make sense of a world he doesn’t seem to fit into. I laughed out loud at some of his antics and could understand how Radiance would fall in love with him. Watching them both try to solve a mystery and the frustration and angst that went with it was very entertaining ! The villain is hidden well, but the end I figured out rather quickly, though not what Edward got as a reward. These two have a special kind of relationship that is truly touching. Some parts seemed a little drawn out, but overall the story is a real GEM!
I received this ARC book for free and these are my own opinions.
I absolutely loved this book. I am slowly becoming Sydney Jane Baily's no 1 fan.
Although I still find the name Radiance absurd I love how in this book someone actually comments on it thinking it is a joke.
I adored Radiance as she is a fully flushed out female main character with her own mind, ambition and lust for life which makes a refreshing change from the typical regency novels I've read. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about gems and jewelry making process through Radiance's free apprenticeship plot line. Edward was a really interesting love interest and I really liked that the author gave him his own personality and profession which is explored through the whole book.
I enjoyed this story with all the characters within. The main character were Lady Radiance Diamond and Edward Lockwood.
Lady Radiance Diamond has fallen in love with gemstone. She like making jewelry and other fashioning trinkets. So when meets a geologist that snags her fancy she want to see him more.
Edward Lockwood has traveled the world look for precious stones. The Queen Victoria has a delicate undertaking that she want him to do. And he finds out that he will be working with Lady Radiance Diamond. He not sure about this.
This was fun to read. It had action, adventure and suspense throughout. It had a mystery within too. There was a few giggles within.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
I must confess that I’m a little disappointed this time, because the book lacked the usual steam. But the mystery was intriguing, the information regarding precious stones quite interesting and the characters lively and very realistic. I laughed quite a lot at Edward’s forgetfulness, even if I really wanted to bash him in the head at some point of the book. I loved Radiance and her cleverness. And I enjoyed having a glimpse of Queen Victoria’s life and her court. A very pleasant read, like all the books of this gorgeous series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Two fun characters are Radiance Diamond and Edward Lockwood. He does not know what to make of her when she comes to his lectures on gems. When he is introduced, he thinks her name is made up, but when he finds out it isn't he eats humble pie. He is a distracted scholar and she is a lady who dabbles in jewelry making. He makes it very hard for Radiance to get him to admit his feelings for her. Being forced to work together brings them closer, but eventually, in order to keep her safe he pushes her away. When he finally makes up his mind about her he may have lost her forever. Their journey is complicated with some intrigue. A delightful story.
Radiance is the 4th book in the Diamonds of the First Water series.
Redheaded Radiance Diamond is not your typical girl of the period. She loves jewels, not just for vanity sake, but the history of them, how they are gathered, how jewelry is made, etc. She wants to learn the craft and excel at it. Sitting in a lecture given by Edward Lockwood, she finds something else to preoccupy her mind.
When two precious gems are stolen from the Queen, Radiance inadvertently, finds herself helping Mr. Lockwood and the crown locate the missing gems and keeping this from happening again.
Not the strongest of the series. The main characters didn't catch my fancy, and even the 'mystery' wasn't that intriguing. Lockwood annoyed me and actually reminded me of the character Sheldon Cooper, with his inability to see past his own nose. Radiance was a little better, being an intelligent woman with a gift for working with jewels. But even she had moments where she was overthinking, which became aggravating. I had to push myself to finish this, and even then, I skimmed through the last few chapters. Hoping the next book in the series will be better.
Radiance and Edward. This book brings a bit of a mystery and suspense along with a lovely love story and was a captivating tale. The characters made this story they were awesome I loved Edward so much. The author gives the reader some delightful dialogue that was witty, fun, and so entertaining. This is an excellent addition to the series. I did receive a free copy of this book from WOLF Publishing and voluntarily chose to review it.
