Even after brokering a deal with the vicious merfolk who stalk his offshore fishing lanes, Captain Killian Quinn has had one too many onboard his boat for comfort. His livelihood, and life, as well as that of his crew’s, depends on his ability to maintain peace. One wrong move and the Dawn Chaser could become a floating charcuterie board, and he’d never see again the one mermaid he wouldn’t mind take a little nibble out of him.
A sinister craving for human flesh leaves Lorelei Roth with no other choice. She must aid the study of one of her own to find a more permanent solution to protect the ones she loves. As enthralled by all her sharp edges and seductive siren song as her fiancé may be, the threat of becoming the wrong kind of snack is never far enough away.
While they’re close to a breakthrough treatment, doubt gnaws at Lorelei as she watches a fellow mermaid languish in a tank, enduring endless rounds of tests and denied the healing touch of the sea. Is one mermaid’s declining health and happiness too steep a price for freedom? And if so, what sacrifices is Lorelei willing to make to set it right?

Lorelei isn’t the only character we see grow with the capture and study of one of her kin. The capture and study of Nireed brings out some of the best and some of the worst of Haven Cove and we discover the enemies is probably exactly who you think it is.
The emotion Niccoli pours into the pages as Haven Cove changes for our favorite little family is amazing. She captures a concern and support for family struggling with mental health and self care in a way that is relatable, a mother’s love and pain that any mom can empathize with, and love so deep for one’s significant other you can’t help but be a tad envious.
Call to the Deep was just a taste of what Lorelei and Killian had to offer. Their love and passion for one another gets hotter still in Book Two as they learn more about each other and themselves.
SONG OF LORELEI continues Lorelei and Killian's story and I enjoyed seeing how the world has been handling the existence of the mermaids as well as the ongoing research into helping the mermaids overcome their sickness for human flesh. I also loved seeing how settled Lorelei and Killian were together and Killian is just *chefs kiss* the perfect partner for Lorelei. He worships the ground she walks on, boosts her confidence, and is completely comfortable with her siren half. They made a really great couple.
This book, along with book 1, felt more like it was Lorelei's journey and not Lorelei and Killian's journey. I liked that their relationship was solid so I don't say this because I wanted angst between them, but there was absolutely no character development for Killian. He almost felt like a secondary character in his own book because everything that happens in this book is focused on Lorelei's struggles and obstacles. Additionally, the structure of the overall story felt off; rather than events building up to a big climax, there were lots of ups and downs and every time I thought the story would end something new would come up. Because of this I felt like there wasn't a full resolution at the end because I was waiting for something else to happen.
With all that being said, I do believe other readers would enjoy this duet, especially if they like cozy small towns in Maine, deadly mermaids, devoted couples, and eco-horror.

This was a brilliant follow up to CALLED TO THE DEEP! There's more action, sexier scenes between our main characters, and even time for a quick heist! We've got a mysterious illness sweeping through the mermaid community, so the stakes to study and save them are high. Niccoli's strength lies in her ability to describe settings beautifully. Time and care goes into the descriptions of Maine living and labor. If you like competence porn that doesn't bog down or overshadow plot pacing, this is your book.
Lastly, the romance between Lorelei and Killian is still as magical as the first book. Mature love stories is all I'm craving these days and these two are fit the bill. Trust, honesty, vulnerability make up the foundation of their relationship. The sex scenes... whew!
In this not to be missed sequel, Niccoli serves up adventure, steamy romance, and a suspenseful plot with a side of clever, wry humor. Song of Lorelei is an irresistible mermaid tale with heart and humanity.
I loved one scene in particular--no spoilers, but it reminded me a little of Ocean's 8 and I laughed out loud!
I don’t WANT to rank the books, but I might have loved this one even more than the first. There’s just something delicious about digger deeper into a relationship. The steam is steamier, emotions are higher, people can accurately estimate what the other is thinking. We’re competent, in love, and here to save the mermaid population!
I’m not sure what I loved most: - The eco-horror dug deeper and we could really see the impact on both the MCs lives, the community, and the world. Corruption galore! - The steam 👀 now that Killian had a chance to get his sea legs in this relationship, we can really dig into those mermaid tricks (that cover scene was everything and more than I hoped for) - The MERMAIDS! I don’t want to give too much away but there might be a heist and a lot more time underwater
It’s not a stand-alone so definitely start with the first book, the whole series is worth it.
This is the perfect sequel following Lorelei and Killian's story after Called to the Deep. Seeing how far they've come from the start where Killian had saved Lorelei from the ocean to where they are now made me a tad bit emotional. The trust and support they have for one another? I LOVE IT. Song of Lorelei was beautifully written and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect sequel.
— 3.5 ⭐️ maybe (?) because I like the knowledge on marine biologist and the important of food chain this book tell. However, some part of the plot was quite nonsense to me. In addition, few of the main focus of this book about family is precious!
The story is continuation from the first book. Even though the first book give a bit of cliffhanger on how Carrie trying to put two and two together about Lorelei, it was not only focusing on that part. The agreement between the mermaids and the human about what can benefits two of them warms my heart. Although trust issue is on the line, they can overcome it and these two creature can find their own peace!!
However as the storyline goes by only one thing that bothers me the most, when “that specific outcome” was spreading, is that the only way these people react? — where is the drama I live for?
The characters. Its hard to say which one I love the most because some part, I like that certain character but the next part I don’t. It also applies to the other characters. So, it was pretty hard to decide which one is my favorite. Nevertheless, certain characters has their own development one by one. They overcome their tragic traumatic experience, acceptance in hand, and moved on. It was beautifully written because the pace is not quite fast but not that slow either. It was in perfect amount. It also applies to the mermaids characters, they had their own share of opinion on the matters especially when it comes to the “ShoreWalker” but when Lorelei was invited (FINALLY!!!), it was making me scream of joy!
Some of specific topics I would like to bring in this book: 🧜🏽♀️ Power abuse 🧜🏽♀️ Classism 🧜🏽♀️ Homesick - The longing of home/ The sense of belonging of home 🧜🏽♀️ Sign Language! , the reason behind why the merfolks used this is understandable!!! 🧜🏽♀️ The different between firstborn-second born-and last born 🧜🏽♀️ Cruelty of scientist and the “entrepreneur” towards the research or sensitive thing on earth 🧜🏽♀️ Animals has feelings ffs! how they treated them in the research centre etc 🧜🏽♀️ White supremacy — it doesn’t say much but it was point out a few times 🧜🏽♀️ The culture of the people living near the sea (?) 🧜🏽♀️ The important of a food chain 🧜🏽♀️ The danger of the environment caused by how the animals live their lifestyle and abused by the other creatures. aka. Human 🧜🏽♀️ Different perspective give you different view of life and everything 🧜🏽♀️ Human is selfish creature! 🧜🏽♀️ Just because they share the same blood, doesn’t mean they are family 🧜🏽♀️ Found Family! 🧜🏽♀️ Biologist knowledge about Sea creatures and its environment
All of the questions answered on this book. Especially about: 1️⃣ The origin of Lorelei 2️⃣ The hiss between merman and merwoman (lol) 3️⃣ The caused of hatred between ShoreWalker and mermaids 4️⃣ The start of the disease
Even though one thing still bothers me but I can slip that up because this book has its own style of telling us the importance of one creatures to another. Also, the writing style the author has received a thumbs up from me! I personally like sea creature and so on but the explanation this author has on “humanly language” possible give an amazement to my understanding. She did a great job of it. The thing is, this book not only give you a romance between 2 different creature and the family they found but it also give you many knowledges to gather. The author also written down the good and the bad of that and those in an reasonable way of thinking. I love it and would like to read more of her works!
Will when he try to hold his laughter about SPAM is precious. And Waltz, pronouncing Lorelei and Killian as marriage couple is something else! 😂😂
The perfect conclusion to Lorelei and Killian's story.
After brokering a deal with Lorelei's vicious, man eating kinsfolk to allow Lila Branson and the team at Haven Cove Marine Research Center to search for a cure for the virus that has caused the sirens to crave human flesh, you'd think the hard part was behind them. But time isn't exactly on their side. It's no secret that no one thrives in captivity, and the mermaid Nireed is no different. Day by day the scientists subject her to various tests and procedures, edging nearer and nearer to a cure while day by day she languishes in the tank at the research center, growing sicker the longer she is away from the ocean.
The longer it takes, the more her health declines and the guiltier Lorelei feels. A cure is something they all want, but is it worth Nireed's life? The more time Lorelei spends with the other siren and leans their ways, the less certain she feels. And in the meantime, will the deliveries of potted meat supplied by Killian and his crew be enough to satiate the waiting mermaids as they race towards the cure or is the crew of the Dawn Chaser headed for disaster as they continue to fish in siren infested waters?
Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky at morning, sailor's take warning. Dawn is breaking, but only time will tell if it will be the impetus of a new day or a harbinger of trouble ahead.
What an absolutely perfect ending to this whirlwind of a tale. Desirèe has once again perfectly balanced the spine-tingling blend of horror and romance and delivered it to us on a silver plate. Song of Lorelei hits the ground swimming (pun intended) with action right out of the gate. This novel has everything you could ever want. Vicious lady monsters, close calls, swoon worthy romance, and more. Well... almost everything you could want. Not enough revenge if you ask me but I might be a little biased. (*AHEM* CARRIE *AHEM*)
We see so much growth for Lorelei and the others over the course of this novel. The time span covered in these pages isn't short and I feel like Niccoli showcases the changes they each undergo in such a natural manner. Nothing felt rushed and sudden, or conversely, too long and drawn out.
The wide range of emotions and reactions showcased in these pages as well felt very natural. We see guilt, determination, fear, forgiveness, grief, acceptance, and so much more. In a world that has suddenly learned that mermaids exist and that they crave human flesh, I wouldn't expect anything less. The denizens of Haven Cove, and the world, have had everything they thought they knew about the oceans turned on its head and it's only natural that they need to process this revelation in a variety of ways.
I'm so glad I picked up this novel. Haven's Cove still has so much more to be discovered and I hope Niccoli plans to let us return for many more stories to come. These sirens have enchanted me and I never want to give them up!
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own. Song of Lorelei is a solid follow up to Called to the Deep, building both on Killian and Lorelei’s love story and the world Desirée Niccoli has created, blending a seaside town setting with mermaid lore. The book takes a somewhat different approach, and while I still enjoyed it, whether you like this one or the previous one (or both) is really down to personal preference. There’s a greater sense of reality, even amid all the intense otherworldly things going on, and while I admit to preferring the more magical aspects of book one, I like what that means for the characters. Lorelei in particular goes through a lot, dealing with some very human issues, a perfect contrast of her arc in the prior book of coming to terms with the more inhuman side of herself. And while I wasn’t sure about following her and Killian again, as they were left in a good place in the last book, they still have issues to work through together, which made this book feel necessary and their love feel earned. And there still is more fantastical stuff, particularly through the introduction of new characters like Nireed. The world expanded and the external stakes were raised in a way that also made this book feel worth reading. This is a solid conclusion to a wonderful, original duology, and I’d recommend it if you enjoy urban fantasy or mermaid romance.
This was such an incredible follow up, and conclusion to Called to the Deep.
Niccoli had me feeling all the feelings from chapter 1. I laughed. I cried. I was furious. I had so much anxiety. There was sadness and disappointment. I felt warm and cozy.
While Called to the Deep was about Lorelei discovering the changes she was going through, bringing a bit of fantasy to the real world, Song of Lorelei brought some very real doses of reality to fantasy. Lorelei may be a Siren but she was dealing with some very real human issues that I connected with deeply.
The tone of this book also felt different but in a way that felt very right with the way the story was going. It was less about discovery and more about building and growing. Watching these characters continue to develop in this world was amazing. Even Awful Carrie got her chance.
I also loved all the new characters and world building that was introduced. Nireed was amazing and so strong and building on the Siren world and lore made my heart happy. I also absolutely loved the science and technical talk. You can really tell that Niccoli put a lot of thought and research into biology of her creatures of the deep.
Also can we talk about how much more spice was in this one. *swoons*
This book made my heart happy.
Thank you Desiree Niccoli for providing me an ARC of this book.
Desiree M. Niccoli has done it again with her return to the lovely seaside town of Haven Cove. It's a beautiful town, full of boats, waves, and carnivorous merfolk that stalk the shores and prey upon anyone who end up in their territories. At the end of the first novel, an uneasy peace has been brokered with the merfolk and Captain Killian Quinn is attempting to hold to it, along with his relationship with the lovely Lorelei, a mermaid on land.
Niccoli's strength of the book is her characters. As a mysterious illness sweeps through the mermaid community, Niccoli gets into the heads of Quinn, Lorelei and those around them in an exploration of morality, diversity, and romance. Being a romance, the absolute core is the relationship between Quinn and Lorelei, and Niccoli delivers.
Their chemistry positively sizzles on page, Niccoli allowing for far steamier scenes in this book than the first. It's a firmly mature love story with the two coming together and still being able to maintain identities as distinct characters. Quin and Lorelei display trust, vulnerability, heart, and humanity.
Just a genuinely beautiful story here, with characters and romance we grow to love.
Lorelei has come to terms with her siren roots, looking to discover a way to effectively subdue her craving for flesh as she works alongside her friend and marine biologist Lila. Lorelei and Lila are a formidable duo, caring deeply for Lorelei’s fellow siren “sister” who has willingly agreed to serve as a test subject so that Lila and her team may find the perfect treatment for our flesh-eating mermaids.
Once again, Niccoli offers emotionally intelligent characters who strive to create change and go against the status quo to ensure the safety of all sirens. Lorelei is electrifying in this second installment, confident in her siren abilities and unafraid to fight for those she loves and speak her mind. Her relationship with Killian has grown, and he continues to show us that, no matter what happens, he will always be there for Lorelei.
What you’ll love about this read is a satisfying conclusion and a deeper look into Lorelei’s family. A sweet ending to our duology, and an even sweeter new beginning for our lovable characters.
I really really loved the first book. It gave me everything I wanted from it and I was super excited to pick up the second one.
I think the reason I didnt love this one as much was because it felt shorter but also this one was very plot heavy and I really wanted to see more of Lorelai and Killian as a couple. But they got together already so I understand its not the same but I love seeing them together and loved seeing them with the family they have built for themselves.
Like I said this one was a lot more plot heavy but I still really enjoyed it. We got a lot more from the mermaid pod that Lorelei calls family now. I loved getting more of Nireed and hearing more from the mermaids. The scenes were we got where Lorelei was underwater with the mermaids were always so much fun. The plot itself kept me engaged throughout the whole book and it was fun to read about.
Overall really love this duology and definitely recommend it if you want a fun mermaid story.

Song of Lorelei dives deeper into the fascinating world of the merfolk while giving us more of the characters we’ve come to love, before bringing the story full circle for a delightful and satisfying conclusion to the duology.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first one. We get even more of the characters we’ve come to love (and hate), as well as some new voices and perspectives that add depth and nuance to the story.
I particularly enjoyed seeing more of the merfolk in this story, and the way that very poignant topics about climate change, morality, and research were handled throughout this book. Not only does it deliver an engaging tale, but it brings a sense of realism and depth that’s often missing from books touching on the paranormal.
Lorelei and Killian continue to shine in this sequel, and I loved seeing their relationship continue to develop and grow.
If you’ve read the first book, you absolutely must pick up this sequel.
I received a free advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book takes us back to the atmospheric little town of Haven Cove, one year after the events of Called to the Deep. Guilt-ridden and overworked, Lorelei is struggling to come to terms with her nature, and grappling with her new abilities. As Kilian regularly puts his crew’s lives at risk to appease the ravenous mermaids who live off the coast. SPAM will only get you so far. They need a cure, and human politics are getting in the way as news of their captive mermaid has brought the sleepy Maine town to the world’s stage.
It’s a fun ride from start to finish, that ties off Lorelei’s and Kilian’s story. Again, it had me staying up far too late finishing it.
After getting through all the world and mermaid lore building in the prequel to this book, I was hoping Niccoli would jump straight into the nitty gritty and give us more action, more drama, more spicy sex scenes, and more mermaid lore in this sequel & she did not disappoint!
It was a whirlwind of fantastic ass writing and I was hooked, lined, and sinked into every single page! I really appreciated the attention to detail that Niccoli gave us as she wove a storyline of rich mermaid history and loved the depth of growth that she gave to both Lorelei and her supporting characters.
It was absolutely beautiful that Lorelei was able to learn about the history of her mermaid kin while also going through a journey of self discovery.
If you’re on the fence about reading this book after getting through the prequel, take this as a sign to READ THIS BOOK!!! I’d give it 10 stars if I could!
* Disclosure: I received an arc of this book in exchange for a honest and accurate review.
It's a winning combination, really, the right level of steam and danger, and I don't think mermaids as threats are written about half as much as they should be in fiction. These series strikes just the right note between siren seduction and warning sirens (pun intended), and I REALLY love that this is a continuation of a story from familiar characters, rather than an episodic series. I love the ability to learn more about characters I've already enjoyed and see their characterization grow over time.
Song of Lorelei was a great sequel. Desirée M Niccoli has a beautiful way of describing the world she's created and the characters feel like they've grown a lot in this novel. The relationship between Lorelei and Killian is just perfect, their chemistry is still as strong as ever. Everything about this novel created a wonderful sequel.

I am absolutely in awe of this book! The way the author describes the mermaids is fantastic. I love how they blend with the human world secretly and the twist at the end is fantastic! It's a definite page turner and I read the whole book in one night! Oh, watch out though! The hot parts are definitely sizzling!.

The event in this book happen after the events of book 1 even thought i havent read book 1 you can follow along the story and know what is going on. In a small fishing town that have some flesh eating mermaids off the shore they make a deal with the meripeople to let them study one of them so. They can help eachother out. We get to see how the characters grow and how there still some hope for humanity left. It fast pace and will leave you wanting more.i cant for the next book.
I loved this book! The authors writing style was beautiful. The romantic scenes were my favorite! And I even loved all the adventures the main character went on! It was refreshing to read! It was difficult to put this book down. I was up half the night reading it! I thought it was a great sequel to the second book, and Killian was my favorite! I look forward to reading book 3!
Niccoli did it again. Song of Lorelei was a beautiful way to wrap up all of my questions from Book one. Killian is back and hotter than ever, Lorelei is stronger and more incredible than ever, and (most) of the citizens of Haven Cove make my heart so so warm. I will be returning to re-read this duology every summer by the shore, enjoying the fog and the rolling mist and the churning water!
I loved this! What an interesting premise and twist on a mermaid’s tale. I didn’t read the first book in the series but I was able to pick this up and not miss a beat. It does make me want to go back and read the first book, though. Mention of certain things that happened in the first book intrigued me. I would love to read more from this author. 5 stars!!
I loved Called to the Deep so much I wasn't sure Song of Lorelei would stand up to it but it did! I even cried happy tears at the perfect last line. A wonderful conclusion to the love story of Lorelei and Killian - no plot line left undone, everything ended perfectly. Desirée Niccoli crafted a beautiful world, romance, and species :)
This is a wonderful mermaid fantasy book that talks about sirens and mermaids in general and their relationship to humans. This is an exciting, intriguing, steamy read that you will not be able to put down. I did not read the first book but after reading this one will go back to see how it began.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A fast-paced, entertaining sequel that completes Lorelei and Killian's story. It both made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes--and the sex scenes are very hot. A perfect read for MerMay! I am not leaving a star rating because I know the author, but I would highly recommend this to both romance novel readers and those interested in a scientifically-based take on mermaids!
Once again, this is sharp and intelligent writing, and the story is so emotional. The mermaids, everyone, is beautifully fleshed out (had to 😈 ), and it's such a spectacular sequel to the first book.
Desiree is obviously a skilled and intelligent writer, and I can't say enough on how sharp her writing always is.
She's set to be a top in her genre of paranormal fantasy.
