Ghost Detective #4

Der Geis ist Willig

Running a private investigation business in the seaside town of Firefly Bay should be a pretty easy job. One where I call the shots—figuratively speaking because to put clumsy little ole me in charge of a firearm is just asking for trouble. After a hectic few months all I’m after is an easy day, where my cases add up to nothing more strenuous than deciding if tonight’s takeout is pizza or tacos (or both).

Should have known my day was going to go to hell in a handbasket when someone switched out my coffee order for decaf (seriously, who does that?) and my main squeeze, Captain Cowboy Hot Pants, aka Detective Kade Galloway’s ex-girlfriend and internal affairs investigator, Savannah Mcintosh, turns up to work a case.

Before I can say café latte, Galloway’s dodging my calls, I’ve got a raccoon on my hands who’s decided mi casa es su casa, my ghostly best friend has a crush to die for, and local teenager Kira Melendez has turned up missing.

So much for an easy day. I have a sneaking suspicion my life is about to become a whole new level of crazy.

Join Audrey Fitzgerald in the Ghost Detective series, a paranormal cozy mystery featuring a cat, a ghost, and a murder to solve.

I actually liked this one. Audrey had to do a lot of legwork on her own, the mystery was nothing stellar, but the secondary issue of the bad cops came to a head. On a side note, how does this girl keeps getting car insurance??? She wrecks every car, every week, okay every other month or so!! Anyway, one thing I was pleased about is that the author didn’t do the old troupe of pitching women against each other ( ex girlfriend vs new girlfriend) I thought that was handled very well. Now can we get a handle on that sister in law, because even I want to reach into the pages and shake her 😒😒

3.5 stars. Yes, it was a silly but cute book in this series, but just what I needed after reading a ton of creepy, scary thrillers.

A GHOST OF A CHANCE:(Book 4 Ghost Detective Series): Jane Hinchey.

WELCOME TO FITZ'S CRAZY CRAZY LIFE!!!

As Everything Goes To Hell In A Handbasket...
Including the House as the Pet's Run Rampage,
Cases Are Out of Hand & Off The Wall,
Danger Lurks Behind Every Dark Corner & Bend,
And Oh No, Not Audrey's Coffee Too, Well That's The Last Straw As Life In General Goes To The Dogs!

I adore this author, the series & her characters as all hell breaks loose in Firefly Bay in every way shape & form possible as the Internal Affairs Investigation into Police Corruption amps up, so too does the action & danger considerably in this instalment of the Ghost Detective Series for adorable klutz & cat whisperer PI Audrey Fitz Fitzgerald!

As Internal Affairs Investigator Savannah McIntosh the tall leggy, blue-eyed, blonde with drop-dead gorgeous supermodel looks & hair (looks like she just stepped off the catwalks of the world & not a long ride) arrives in town to clean up the FBPD & take out the corrupt trash.

Rumour mills run rampant as everyone quickly learns dum dum dum....Shock & horror, it just so happens this sophisticated, co-ordinated lanky hot blonde, that's everything that Audrey's not, just so happens to be an another Galloway (Captain Cowboy Hot Pants) ex-girlfriend & partner as everyone expects Audrey to fall to pieces.

This book has our beloved Audrey in way over her head once again. But this time it has little to do with her inexperience as a PI, nor rushing headlong into danger without thinking about the consequences, the danger, arranging back up or pre-planning, but not even the seasoned cops will see this coming!

As much as I love everything about these Cozy Mysteries, there are one or two small exceptions and I don't particularly like writing criticisms, but if you don't, how can an author truly improve their skills & craft and work on flaws in a story if all they ever hear is how great they are? But there's a way to do both without blowing smoke up their butts.

Think about it how can they improve their spelling, punctuation & grammar if they don't have a dedicated team of editors, ARC & BETA Readers? Many typos slip through even the best of editors, after all, we're all human & we all make mistakes.

But there's a way to write it without being offensive, try, 'Constructive Criticism' written in a positive & nice way & explain why you feel as you do.
Then there's just downright 'Nasty Criticism' & no-one needs the later after pouring their blood, sweat, tears & tantrums into such hard work only to have it shot to pieces, or if you truly feel the need, have the decorum to write privately & contact the author directly.
So here's my constructive criticism for A Ghost of a Chance.

Cons:
Most books in this series have begun the same way. Audrey is on some ridiculous case no person in their right mind would splash out hundreds (or more) of dollars for on a private investigator to check out! i.e. a missing goldfish (especially without asking other household members first if they flushed it) or missing newspapers off the front lawn/porch.
And then as Fitz cracks the simple zany case, a real case drops into her lap!
And I understand not every case can be a murder or the case of the year, but they should also be realistic.

Sorry, Jane, I have no wish to be rude, never would be nasty, but I just can't see anyone forking out hard-earned money for a private detective when they can simply spend another dollar to buy a newspaper or set up a cheap camera to catch the thief in action. It's just not logical.

Pros:
Although in saying that, the formula was changed up in a big way after 4 books & a novella in the series. Not about the cases, but what happens in the cases.
I thought this was a masterstroke! And most definitely not a Con, it's a Pro, but follows on from the paragraph above.
I won't say more, I don't want to create spoilers here, but you'll pick it by the end of book 4 'A Ghost Of A Chance!' (there's a tiny clue)!

Pro & Cons:
While I loved this book, I have given this instalment a lower score than the last for a couple of reasons, but just by a tad! And it makes me feel good inside everything I read a Jane Hinchey Cozy Mystery & realise I have my usual big dopey grin plastered on my face from ear to ear the whole time I read one of her books, as I always do. These books are like a great big warm blanket wrapped around you in front of a roaring fire in the middle of winter. Pure Comfort!

The Cons:
1).  While I adored it, I didn't love it as much as the last novella, but still really enjoyed it and rate it quite highly.

2). The world-building and descriptive nature which Ms Hincey excels at wasn't quite up to her usual standard, but that could be as the last book was set in a different town than where every other book of the series has been set (Firefly Bay compared to a family holiday home near a lake). It may just be the difference of needing to outline a new town, homes, buildings & outdoor woodlands covered in ice & snow, plus there's a whole new secondary set of characters (well apart from the usual Fitzgerald Clan).

The Pros:
One of the huge improvements for me in this & the last story was no mention of Audrey's signature defensive move of kicking an attacker in the family jewels! Thanks, Jane, that's a stroke of genius in my opinion & while we usually see funny videos of men rolling on the ground in agony it's usually after a child or a ball hits them when they are around friends & family; when there's no danger nor adrenaline pumping.
But in true times of danger & adrenaline, most men can & will get straight back up to fight/attack & most self-defence teachers teach better, more effective moves, stating a kick to the groin is not an effective move/tactic for this reason. S;o I have to congratulate the author for adapting this.
And can't wait to read the next episode in the series! Back to the Writing Cave Cat lady. Lol!

If you really love & enjoy a book, why not thank the author by leaving a review?
It can be as short or as long as you like, serious 2 lines will do, if that's all you want to write, and they really do make a difference, they even help with how companies advertise that authors books & how much advertising they get, especially with Indie (independent) authors those who self publish the books themselves out of their own pockets.

I RATE A GHOST OF A CHANCE
4.5⭐OUT OF 5⭐!!!!

Do yourself a favour and check out Jane's other series & standalone books. You won't regret it. Both her Cozy's & Paranormals are Absolute Rip Snorters!

I received an ARC of this book from the author, but that in no way affects my reviews and this is my fair, honest and impartial opinion & review as always.

Audrey is really in the wars this time

Poor Audrey goes through an awful lot in this latest book, more than usual and most of it isn't due to her well-documented clumsiness. A missing girl is her latest case but her attention is elsewhere as lots of other things occupy her mind. Thor acquires a new mischievous friend and together they create mayhem, Kade is on the missing list, Savannah (Kade's ex and an IA detective) is in town investigating the corruption in the police department, Ben is also on the missing list haunt-stalking said ex, and that's before the corruption meets Audrey head-on in very dangerous ways.
The other books have contained a lot of interaction between Audrey and Ben or Audrey and Kade but this time she is on her own, with Kade not returning her calls and Ben obsessing about his latest crush. I missed all that interaction, the chat, the banter, the exposition it allows, and I wished that there was more of Ben and Kade, but that is a personal preference. There was so much going on that their absence didn't matter as much as it would if Audrey was just meandering about, but she had no time for that. The story did not drag at all and there were definitely shocks along the way, and I enjoyed reading it.
The only thing missing was mention of what happened at the end of Ghost The Halls, the Christmas-themed novella, because I hoped that the 'Christmas miracle' was permanent, for both Audrey's sake and Ben's, but it was obviously not to be.

Nothing is ever routine when PI Audrey is on the case! This is a laugh out loud can't put it down mystery that has clumsy Audrey looking for a missing girl. And now Internal Affairs comes to town to help Detective Cowboy Hot-Pants, Kade, suss out the bad cops. But, we find, the internal affairs investigator is Kade's ex-girlfriend. Will that destroy Kade and Audrey's relationship? Will he want to go back to his ex-girlfriend? At least Audrey can give her deposition about Mills a really bad cop who has had it in for Audrey and even physically beat her. Does Mills know she is testifying against him? Will he lay low? Are there other cops in the fold that are dirty? And then we have Audrey's do-gooder sister-in-law who thinks Audrey's caffeine addiction is just not good for her health and takes it upon herself to help Audrey whether she wants it or not. But is she the one who switched out her regular coffee for decaf? Who would do that! Where is Kade and why is he not answering her calls and messages? Who tried to run Audrey off the road? What is going on? And then there is Ben who is a ghost and sort of her mentor since she took over his PI business and his house. And his cat Thor who Audrey can talk to and understand and Bandit a racoon who seems to have adopted Audrey since Bandit seems to like Thor. Wow so much to put together while laughing out loud you just have to read it yourself! I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Unlike the other mysteries in this series this one does not include a murder. A cat, racoon and a ghost in this story make this tale a zany one.
I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

I loved this book, no surprise there. This series is so much fun. This time, Audrey Fitzwilliam, private investigator, finds herself trying to find a missing teenager. She finds herself facing challenges as she figures out where the girl might be, including adopting a raccoon, including facing her nemesis, Officer Ian Mills of the Firefly Bay Police Department. It's not a pretty confrontation. Will Mills succeed with his devious plot? What about Captain Cowboy Hotpants? What's going on with him? Trust me, you will want to find out.

As in other books by this author, the writing is great. It makes you want to keep turning pages to find out what happens next. With Audrey on the case, there’s always a lot of excitement.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

Ghost of a chance (?spoiler?)

Audrey Fitzgerald her little family of a ghost and a talking cat encounter a lonely raccoon. Galloway's ex-girlfriend on IA investigating corruption in the ranks.
Audrey trusts her "Captain Cowboy Hot Pants", but Ben is not so trusting. She's not the jealous type.
One morning, her coffee doesn't give her the 'pick me up' it usually does. She is going to give her deposition against Officer Mills.
When she gets back, her coffee cup is empty. Thor tells her it was decaffeinated. She vows to get her revenge. She runs to her favorite Ethnic store to pick up TWO packages of her regular dark roast pods. One to hide in her closet. Amanda catches Audrey leaving the sore and gives you the card of the owner of a new day spa. It seems her daughter is missing.
A kidnapping leads to either a 'colonoscopy or new set of knives'.

This book is appropriate for readers,.junior high and older. The plot introduces the plot, a build to climax and anti-cmimax. Audrey learns who changed out decaff for her regular dark roast. She claims revenge.

Enjoayble read. Wish I saw more character growth from Audrey, we are in book 4 already. Reading this book, I had questions. Why don't they utilize Ben's ability more to go through people's phones? Everyone I interviewed, I would use it on. Also, doesn't she have a smart watch she got gifted last book, why does she keep losing track of time and only know when she checks her phone.

She could use the watch to make calls, and it would be so helpful. Also, if her phone had a signal, she could have looked at GPS for her location while she talked to police.

I would love to see her make more friends other than Ben. Live ones. Also, her getting run off the road, really she couldn't use voice activation to call the police. It just seems like so many inconsistencies in this book. She is supposed to be a great PI but can't seem to do things to help herself.

Wish Ben would have been there for the corruption take down. It all started with him, leaving him out of it seemed wrong.

This was a great addition to the Ghost Detective Series. It was a nice change of pace to have the main issue/mystery being something other than murder. There was plenty of action to keep people interested. There were enough suspects and motives to keep you wondering who the culprit was, which was good. Audrey's new "friend" Bandit is definitely amusing. I hope we find out soon why Audrey is able to talk to her. She (Bandit) and Thor seem to act like siblings, which is also amusing. There's not as much ghostly action (because the mystery isn't a murder) and less Kade (you have to read to find out why). Poor Audrey in this one, though. She must be exhausted with everything she has to go through. The pacing was great, as usual. I am voluntarily reviewing this book, gifted to me by the author with no obligation.

I really love this series and this book is no exception. Audrey is my kind of gal -- Clumsy coffee loving plunge head first think of consequences second. Sure it lands her in trouble but her quirks and buds help her in a jam though in this latest adventure her ghost BFF is love sick and Kade is strangely quiet. I love that Audrey trusts her guy and doesn't immediately go into angst that he's cheating. Don't want to give spoilers so I'll just say all is not as it appears and between furbabies being well crazy along with the new case and other ongoing speedbumps Audrey comes through with her humor and coffee intact. Just a great laugh out loud read.

Why does our intrepid sleuth get summoned to the police department? I love Ben! He is a hoot! What happens when he sees Savannah? What investigation does our favorite PI gt hired to solve? I liked savannah! Where does Kade disappear to? What happens when Audrey gets home from sleuthing on her new case one evening? What does she do to remedy the situation? When she heads out to do more sleuthing on her case, where is she heading and what happens? The family ends up with Audrey, mom, sister, and sister in law having a spa day, how did that happen? Who is Kira? What about Campbell? See who had the audacity to touch Audrey's coffee!!!! Enjoy the read!

This is a laugh-out-loud story from almost page one so don't read it in bed when your spouse is trying to sleep. I could contain the noise, but I couldn't contain the shaking and I disturbed my husband more than once. Needless to say, he didn't find the story nearly as entertaining as I did. I have no regrets! This one is fabulous and I stayed up all night reading it. I don't regret that, either, and I had all the coffee the next day (without all the problems Audrey had) to stay awake. This is my favorite story in the series and the second I finished it I wished I could read it for the first time, again.

Audrey's life becomes more and more interesting. Not only does she have to worry about her detective work but again her life was in danger and Kade was missing. I like her character, not at all boring, with her propensity for accidents and her annoying sister-in-law trying to correct her. Cunning and tenacious, Audrey takes her job as a private detective seriously and was not intimidated by the challenges she was facing. Kept me entertained and laughing with her antics and the things that happened. An interesting and entertaining story with some action and suspense and many funny situations.

Great story! Audrey finally gets her chance to tell her story about Officer Ian Mills' attack to Internal Affairs. Of course, the IA representative is none other then her boyfriend Galloway's hot ex-girlfriend. But she actually likes Savannah and is sure Captain Cowboy Hot Pants is not going to dump her for his ex, no matter what the rumors mill says. She also gets a new case, and a new pet. There is all kinds of action in this one from kidnapping to shootouts. Audrey wrecks another car, someone switches out her coffee supply for decaf, and she ends up in the hospital..again. Ben, the ghost of her best friend, still scares the heck out of her by popping in and out at inopportune times, her cat, Thor, still talks to her, and her sister-in-law is still driving her crazy. Enjoy the madness of it all.

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Finally a deposition to kickstart the deep dive of the review of the local pd

The beginnings of the chain of events that had led yo her friend Ben losing his job as an officer, leading to the events that costed him his life

A teenaged girl is missing. Drama related to the investigation of the dirty cops keeps interfering with Audrey’s investigation.

Galloway has also gone unresponsive. Has he started something with his hot IA detective ex, or is more involved?

Death, drama, dirty cops, and caffeine snitching sneaks make for an exciting and hilarious story

A Ghost of a Chance is the fourth book in the Ghost Detective series by Jane Hinchey.

This series keeps getting better and better.

When someone switches your coffee to decaf, you know it will be a long, bad day. Audrey is investigating a missing person case as well as meeting with an Internal Affairs person who happens to be Galloway’s ex.

Audrey has to deal with the results of her clumsiness as well as adjust to a new four-legged member of the family. It is very entertaining.

I received this book as a gift and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This is another of Audrey's adventures that keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. I have to say that Audrey, Kade & Ben really keep me turning pages and I love all of the Firefly Bay inhabitants. Each and every one of these stories is Great. Audrey grows but stays the same in some ways as well. I love the trust she has for her boyfriend, Kade.
I received an ARC from the author and I am leaving this Totally Honest Review because I choose to and I LOVED this book. I Highly recommend! Happy Reading!!!

Audrey (Fitz) Fitzgerad is finding that running a detective agency in Firefly Bay can be very boring or extremely hard, depending on the case she is working on. When boyfriend, Detective Kade Galloway isn’t returning her calls, Fitz wonders if it is because his gorgeous ex-girlfriend, an Internal Affairs investigator is back in town. Why isn’t Kade returning her calls? Fitz set out to find out. I love this fun and quirky series. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

Book 4 really ranks it up.
Audrey is dealing with a missing teenager.
Kade's ex girlfriend turns up, she's an Internal Affairs investigator.
Audrey gives her statement in regards to Mill's attack on her.
Then Kade dodges Audrey's calls.
Oh, and Audrey gets kidnapped...
But that's just the start of it...
Enter Bandit the Raccoon, a love struck Ben & someone swapped Audrey's coffee to decaf!!!

Entertaining and suspenseful as always.
The corruption is coming to a showdown, brilliantly written...
Another great read!!!

Such a fun series!

This story provides a different kind of mystery; however, Audrey has more trouble here than in the other three stories combined! I adore this charming character; she's plucky and confident without being arrogant. I especially appreciated her refusal to allow any opinions to make her question her relationship. Now that Audrey's investigation is closed and the corruption is exposed, I hope she uses her recuperation to focus on Amanda's richly earned comeuppance...

This is another good addition to the Ghost Detective series. Audrey is hired to find a missing teen, Ben has a crush on the IA investigator, Galloway (Captain Cowboy Hot Pants) goes missing, and the investigation of corrupt cops in Firefly Bay heats up. Audrey is her usual clumsy self but she gets the job done as usual. I love these characters. I've come to care about the whole gang. The mystery is well plotted but Jane Hinchey really excels at character development.

Another entertaining instalment in the Ghost Detective series. Audrey continues to be so much fun and always gets herself into difficult situations. As she investigates a missing teen, the corrput cop investigation heats ups and her cop boyfriend goes missing. Audrey is always in the heart of the action. And Thor, Audrey's talking cat, gets a friend....another animal Audrey can communicate with. Nothing but action, adventure and fun!

Ghostly Adventure LOL
This is a laugh-out-loud adventure! In this episode, the fur really flies. The mystery is very straightforward as the crew tries to find a missing teen. I have read this entire series and the stories just keep getting better. While each story can be read alone, it is so much better when the reader has all of the background. I am already anticipating the next episode. I received this ARC book for free from the author and this is my honest review.

Audrey is involved with a missing teenager this time. She is also meeting with Internal Affairs regarding Detective Mills. This story catches you from the beginning and entertains you all the way through. Audrey is in love with Detective Calloway and her talking cat Thor has a new admirer as well, Bandit. You will laugh along with all the antics. Audrey is an accident waiting to happen in the best possible way. Read this, you won't regret it.
