Tom Percival writes and illustrates picture books (you know, for kids) as well as illustrating books written by other people. The most well known of these is probably the excellent Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy.
He grew up in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire. On reflection this seemed rather more remote than beautiful, owing to the fact that he lived in a small caravan without electricity, mains water or any sensible form of heating. He thinks that he’s probably one of the few people in his peer group to have learnt to read by gas lamp. Surprisingly enough he has never been called ‘hippy’ (to the best of his knowledge)
Tom now lives in an actual house with his girlfriend and their two young sons. His favourite colour is turquoise and his favourite number is usually seven.
Tom has three picture books available, Tobias and the Super Spooky Ghost Book, A Home for Mr Tipps, Jack's AMAZING Shadow and a fourth, Herman's Letter will be publishing in October 2012 through Bloomsbury
Hooray! The Little Legends saga continues! As much fun and just as smart and witty as book 1 The Spell Thief. Wonderful characters - love Old Bert and his Sea Snacks. Looking forward to more tales in the series! Highly recommended!
Yet another read with work kiddo. I continue to be charmed by this series and the clever way the author works in traits from the original stories into these versions of the characters, ngl—they are by necessity lightly sketched in, but deftly chosen. Red Riding Hood(ie... it's an AU, of course she has a red hoodie, I love it)'s defining character trait and the throughline of her character development in this book is that she Trusts Strangers Too Much and learns to be more discerning throughout the course of the plot. No big bad wolves, but (Cinder)Ella, a not-so-evil huntsman who secretly wants to be a woodsman, and a wicked witch feature; it's good, fast-paced fun and the moral bits weren't nearly so heavy-handed as in the first book. It also helps that Red is way less of a jerk than Jack, so less annoying to read about.
Kiddo opinions: sometimes we had to cover up the pictures with the witch because he didn't want to look at them, and also there is a magical poop joke scene, which went over pretty well, because, well, these are still MG books and nothing is funnier than poop jokes for the under-10 set, amirite.
By the way, I was not expecting the Racism Allegory troll plot to be stretched out but
Not sure if kiddo has the third in the series but I am highly tempted to see if they're at the library or go to B&N and tachiyomi the rest. I'm invested now, this is my life, send help
After reading the first book in this series, I was very happy to have the second one on hand. In the first book we followed Jack as the main character and in this one we follow Red as she has to rescue her friends from an evil witch. The story picks up where the first one left off, the kids are still trying to help Anansi figure out how to help his family, but his mom is on her way to him and she gets captured by the evil witch.
We learn more about Red's character and her friends as the story progresses and the friendships that form and build. There is a lot of teamwork and learning in these fun, adventurous books and I think young readers will really enjoy this series. And as an added bonus the illustrations are so much fun too!
Yhdessä kolmikko ryhtyy selvittämään, miten he saisivat Hilkan ystävät sekä Anansin äidin pelastettua noidan kynsistä...
Kokonaisuutena hauska teos, jossa päähenkilönä on tällä kertaa Hilkka.

Book 2 introduces new characters - Ella and Cole - to the group of friends. Anansi's mom is coming to visit but ends up shipwrecked on Squirrel Nose Island. Jack and all of his friends help Anansi get to the island to see his mom. There they encounter a wicked witch who plans to take over the world. Working together with their new friends, they defeat her plan and find a possible solution to change Anansi' mom and uncle back to being human not trolls. The humor continues. Percival's writing pace works or mid-elementary level readers. These would be terrific read alouds.
Little Legends is intended for early middle grade readers. It is based on fairy tale characters like Jack in the beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella etc. In the Great Troll Rescue, a new friend Anansi needs to meet his cursed mother on Squirrel Island. A huntsman, a wicked witch and many magical creatures are involved. The font is very readable and large in size. There are illustrations throughout the book that are well done. It’s a fun little adventure if you don’t think too hard about the storyline and plot if you are older than the target age.
A fairytale character book, with plenty of nods to the classics. Picked up as it's the same author as the Marvellous Misfits one we both really liked - it was ok, but not as fun to read aloud (quite a bit of stumbling on my part, which tends to happen when I'm tuning out). I'll be honest, fairy tales aren't my medium of choice, they need to be well utilised to get my attention. Kid said he "didn't love it". He tends to rate books fairly high so we settled on 4 stars.
The story I liked quite a lot, but no doubt, the best thing about this books was the way the pages were constructed. They were all very unique, and it was fun to read.
Another fun story! it's creepier than the first with a legitimately scary witch with scary witch pictures that I am sure would have given me nightmares as a kid! But my girls liked it even more because of this. For those sensitive to magic, there is some dark magic going on with the evil witch... but that's kind of what evil witches do, so no real surprise there. Malia's favorite part: the "muh haha witch." liana's favorite part: "the witch whose was a foiled and spoiled nincompoop..." (umm okay? nice rhyming? still too scary to be a nincompoop thinks mom) definitely fun, the girls already want to read the next one.
