I read the first in this series last year and was really impressed with it. Sometimes sophomore efforts are a bit lacking when the first in a series is a home-run....that's definitely NOT the case with this book! These books are much more about the characters, particularly "the Dead Detective" Kevin Fahey. He was a lousy husband, father, cop & man when he was alive, but he seems to have been given a chance at redemption now that he's no longer among the living. This book dealt with some very dark subject matter, but was truly an excellent read. Even giving a look at what might be waiting for the "monsters" that walk among us when their time is up.
Delightful. Looking forward to reading the other book in the series. Love novels that encourage me to examine where in my life I'm missing the joy of living in every moment.
This is a story about a detective that passed away but his spirit is still here. His spirit goes to the precint he worked at and watches over Maggy, the detective that took his place when he died.
one day Maggy is called to a homicide scene, while gathering evidence they hear a scream at the park across the street. They find out a young 4 year old boy was taken while the mother was looking across the street at all the cops at the murder scene. The spirit of the detective is able to see clues that are not visible to the naked eye of the living, so he tries to show signs that will lead Maggy to the clues. soon he finds the boy and he knows that he doesnt have alot of time before something awful is going to happen to the boy, so he really amps up his efforts to get Maggy to see.
Maggy is working on the murder case while others are working on the missing boy case but she cant help but wonder if they are both connected in some way.
This story held my interest all the way through, I didnt want to put it down at times. i felt the frustration of the spirit when he was trying soooo hard to get Maggy to see the clues, I just wanted to point them out and yell at her to go back. There were twists and turns and things that I figured out and others that I didnt see coming. A very good mystery.... may have to see if there are more like this from this author..
I do like my cosy-mysteries, but paranormal cosy-mysteries are not high on my list. I picked this one up at a book fair for $1.00. It's a fair price to give something a try.
I have to say I really enjoyed this book. Yes, I thought some of the paranormal angles played out a little trite, but the mystery felt well-plotted and the characters were cleverly crafted. I was drawn into the book, and the mystery, from early on. The main negative is that I felt the author failed to take full advantage of some of the support cast for the book - the two small characters that played a big role in the first 100 pages or so, and then basically vanished. They were both interesting characters, and feel that Noni Bates and Robert Michael Martin deserved a bigger contribution to the story. I'd hope they would reappear in further books in the series.
The subject matter is a bit dark for a cosy-mystery, but seemed handled well. Not sure if others in the series are equally dark, but guess I'll find out if I get the chance to read another.
I enjoyed the mixed up story lines running through this book which all came together at the end and tied it up nicely. Although not exciting it had enough suspense to keep you wanting to read on. I took rather longer than usual to read this and found it didn't flow quite as well due to my bitty reading schedule.
Kevin Fahey following Maggie again in this crime tale of murder and kidnap. I liked the way it all linked together with ease. Will look out for more books in this series.
Haven't read anything in this series before - this was pretty good. Worth reading if you see it and like police procedurals with a twist. Knew the big baddie pretty early, but there were still a few twists and seeing how the police figured it out was worth it.
One never knows....will the next book in a liked series be better? No question with the second installment of the Dead Detective!
Kevin Fahey was a lousy cop/parent/person who finds himself in limbo on earth after being killed in a drug bust gone bad. The more time he spends as a spirit, the more he learns about himself and works to right the wrongs done when he was alive....and the more he learns about being a ghost. He finds himself spending much of his time as an observer, and one day finds himself admiring an old woman in her garden. Soon he's following as she accompanies a neighborhood man who "watches the people who watch the children" and the peaceful day is broken by the sound of sirens. Fahey drifts into a house surrounded by yellow tape to find a woman dead on the floor...then in the middle of the distraction a young boy is abducted from the park across the street. Thus begins a roller-coaster of a read, with several twists and turns.
This series is a bit darker than most of the mysteries I usually read but I enjoy the story-telling and the characters. I'm ready for the Dead Detective's next case!
An engaging detective story featuring Maggie Gunn and her new partner, a brash, hot headed type,Calvano. A nurse is found dead in her house of a gunshot to the head. While people nearby in a park were distracted by the police activity at the house, a child was kidnapped. Are the crimes connected? The author uses an unusual technique, in that the narrator is a dead detective who is sort of in limbo but who has some limited powers to affect the course of the investigations. (It is also a cautionary tale of sorts, as the dead detective laments all his lost opportunities and self-indulgence in life, as well as his drinking, self-pity and lackadaisical attitude toward his work. ) He want to assist Maggie to begin some sort of redemption. He is able to help in some subtle ways. The crimes are eventually solved, and both Calvano and Fahy (the dead narrator) are partly responsible.
While it may sound peculiar, the dead detective narration works very well in the hands of this author.
4 1'2 stars. Kevin Fahey is a better man dead, that he ever was when he was living. As a ghost, he observes people and feels what they are feeling. And he continues his work as a policeman, sort of, by following his favorite detective, Maggie Gunn. While investigating a homocide, Maggie and her partner are interupted by the screams of a mother at the park across the street. A small boy has gone missing. Now Maggie has two cases that she needs to solve. Fahey locates the child but how will he ever tell Maggie where he is?
I love this series. I enjoy the observations about people that only someone unseen and unheard could make. I enjoy the characters and the crimes are interesting. Fahey may be more sensitive as a ghost but he is still a hard edged cop at heart. He knows how the system works, right or wrong. Maggie knows too but is good at getting around it. I hope there are more of these wonderful books that are more about people, good and bad, as well as crime.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
I liked the first Dead Detective book by Chaz McGee(aka Katy Munger). And I think I liked this second book in the series even more. The main character, ghost Kevin Fahey is wandering the earth, apparently unable to move on until he rights some of the many wrongs he incurred by being an alcoholic and dirty cop in life. He works cases, shadowing and occasionally effecting guidance upon Maggie Gunn, a detective who is everything Fahey was not. This was another great mystery, with satisfying resolution, and another opportunity to see characters and relationships I like evolve. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
Could the next book in a series improve...a resounding Yes!
Another murder/ police procedural/ emotional roller-coaster ride for the reader. This author grabs you and pulls you and your emotions/beliefs right with her page by page.
I'm crazy about this series. It is not for the faint of heart and deals with real situations that can break your heart...second chances/redemption...do you believe?
Well written mystery that has the added twist of a dead cop trying to assist in finding the murderer. Though he screwed up in life, Kevin Fahey has discovered some profound truths/insights while musing how and why he's still anchored to the earth plane. In this one, he tries to help his earthbound partner to find the murderer of a well-liked nurse while consecutively also trying to find a four-year old boy who was abducted from a park across the street from the murder scene.
I really like this new author. This book keeps me wanting to stay up late to read, but alas, I have work to do. This book has the same dead detective as Mr.Chaz' first book. Trying to redeem himself by being a good cop now, helping Dective Maggie get the bad guys. While alive, by his own admission, he was a lousy cop, lousy husband, and a drunk. Now he tries to help others, while still being dead. He can search for missing children in places where others can not go.
this series is very interesting. There's the dead guy who usually knows who's guilty and tries to lead others there, there's the good cop, the bad ones and lots of interesting characters. There's some deep thoughts and wisdom from the dead cop, who has learned wisdom in his situation about life and what really matters.
This is the second book in the "A Dead Detective Mystery" series. I've read the first, also. I enjoyed this book better because he has had time to round out the character. I was keeping up with what was happening and loved going along for the ride. I think I may have earned my mystery dectective special "badge".
I am normally not a mystery reader, but the premise of this book intrigued me. Inept cop dies and is stuck as a ghost on earth helping his replacement solve crimes. I really enjoyed it and have to find the first one and am looking forward to more! I was able to guess most of the plot without sneaking too many peeks, but it was fast-paced with some twists and surprises.
2nd book in a series about a dead cop who is still hanging around, we don't know why, but he admits to being a lousy cop, lousy husband, not a very good cop, so maybe he is getting a chance to redeem himself by helping out his ex-partner Maggie as she carries on her police work. I don't if I will try to find the first book or not, it was an interesting read.
Second in series - still a lot of food for thought as Fahey muses on his new life as he helps his replacement, Maggie solve the murder of a nurse and the kidnapping of a young boy, Tyler. Maggie's father, Colin, tells her that an eighth of his cases with solved through heaven sent hunches. Maggie and ER doc Fletcher seem like they have a spark between them.

This is the second Dead Detective book and it is just as enthralling as the first! I sure hope there will be a 3rd and 4th book. Such an interesting main character, a man who is dead but is learning more about life than when he was alive. Keep writing Mr. McGee I want to see what happens next!
I don't purchase a lot of books over $4 because there are so many books out there that are cheaper and great reads. However, I paid full price for this one and upon finishing it, paid full price for the 3rd book. I am in love with this series and so invested in the characters. I love that it has a unique angle on crime fiction. Getting ready to start book 3 now.
A Dead Detective mystery. Kevin Fahey is trying to compensate for being a lousy husband, father and cop. In his own, limited way he tries to help the detective who replaced him, Maggie Gunn. Fun to read.
I loved the concept of a dead detective. I also found this book to be a little more philosophical and reflective than the typical mystery. I loved the combination.
