Higashikata and Shijima vow to abandon their comedy dreams if they fail to win the High School Comedy Battle, but the competition is not what they prepared for. With just 30 minutes to spare, will they be able to write an entirely new sketch worthy of first place? Or is this the end for the talented duo?
Liked this volume a ton, it was actually really funny at points.
The way the manga explains how comedy show and competitions work is really well done. Volume 1 had a few chuckle moments but this one legit made me laugh out loud at a few parts. The humor is growing but also the battle between different duos continues to get more interesting and I also really love the art, but expect no less from the creator of death note.
The art style for this manga just keeps getting better and better - I can't imagine how difficult it must be to portray humor and stand-up comedy on paper, but it's done so remarkably well. The difference in facial expressions is sometimes comic gold on it's own. The comedy wasn't the most funny thing I've seen our there - this is something I said about the first volume and it still reigns true, but I imagine if I was watching them in person I might feel differently. I truly appreciate that this manga feel like nothing I've ever read before, it's really just a school life story with little to no romance (which not everyone wants to read about). I love the growth and development we are seeing in the characters, and the ending of this one really left me wanting more. I can't wait to read the next volume.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #VIZmedia E-ARC of #ShowhaShotenVol2 by Akinari Asakura with art by Takeshi Obata (Death Note) to read and review.
Ok, I guess I might just be that basic because the follow-up to last volume, where the boys have to make a skit so stupid that it breaks down audience resistance, is utterly hilarious to me. That sketch was the very essence of "the gag works, so we're going to do it repeatedly" and for some reason, even when you know it's coming, it's still laugh-out-loud funny! They say that the funniest people are the saddest ones, so a good chunk of the middle we delve into the sad backstory of the charismatic kid and discover the origins of why he wants to perform. Not really THAT gut-wrenching, but still enough to see where he's coming from.
I'm gonna be real with y'all...I don't understand Manzai, the Japanese stand-up specialty. I didn't understand it when they made it the schtick for the protagonists in "Pokemon Special" during the Diamond/Pearl arc, I don't understand it now. In theory, I suppose, I can understand why it's supposed to be funny, but just a funny-guy-straight-man combo isn't prime comedy for me. So the duo discovering the basics of this old school stand-up style wasn't a grand revelation for us the audience, but the characters learned something and thats what's important.
Enough of that tho, new competition on the horizon and the players all seem like they're wacky enough to even involuntarily bring the laughs. Also, new fat slob character to hate cuz it worked SO WELL in "Bakuman" (and to my knowledge, he never really got his redemption in that story...maybe he really did get lucky & procreated this malicious fatso?).
This series has been so fun! The jokes in this volume hit a lot more for me than in last volume. I really love meeting more characters in this manga, I have a feeling this series is going to have a huge cast of characters like Haikyuu or My Hero Academia and that's so exciting. In this volume, we see Shijima and Higashitaka rush to create a whole new skit in thirty minutes and I feel like they knocked it out of the park. It was a classic type of skit with a simple premise, but it was executed so well. I've really enjoyed Akinari Asakura's writing style so far. You can really tell that he knows his stuff when it comes to comedy writing and I really like his stories about wanting to be a comedian in between each chapter. I couldn't stop laughing while reading this volume and I can't wait for the next release! Higashikata and Shijima kill it and they successfully break down the audiences dam, but unfortunately, they come in second to another group called Rising. I really wish we got to see their performance, but I assume we're going to see them when Higashikata and Shijima get to Wara-Ko. The boys feel so ashamed when they have to lie to Shijima's family about winning after Rising pulls out of the competition out of pity. We learn more about Higashikata's past as a child actor and about his emotionally unavailable mother. Throughout this volume, we get to see Higashikata embrace himself for who he is and not as something transparent to be shaped for each different role. The boys start working with Hanamori and she tries coaching them, but they suck at manzai style comedy. They have to learn to be themselves when they're onstage before they can even think about performing on an actual stage.
It's early days for the comedic duo of Azemichi and Taiyo, and they are already putting everything on the line as victory is the only shot of their comedy dreams not being crushed. What unfolds is an interesting tale which delves further into these well-rounded characters, including the terrific rivals, while building upon the main characters and their histories. If this series keeps up this quality, then it will be an absolute favourite of mine.
Our two rising comedians have 30 minutes to come up with an entirely new routine in order to win the High School Comedy Battle (and earn the parental blessing to actually try and be comedians). The results are... mixed. (Of course they get the okay from the parents because the plot requires it).
So now we're on to Manzai comedy (strange term for me) and preparation for Wara-1 Koshien, the High School Manzai Championship. But before we get too far ahead, let's delve into some backstory drama!
In this volume, we see the conclusion of the High School Comedy Battle that the boys entered in volume one - no spoilers here as to what happens though! After that, the boys help out with a school sign-up drive that has them doing manzai comedy for prospective parents. I would definitely recommend checking out this volume! We really get to see the boys grow as comedians.
Thanks NetGalley, VIZ Media, and VIZ Media LLC for access to this entertaining arc!
5/5 stars!
We get to see more of Higashikata and Shijima's stand up routines and struggles in this volume, and I'm rooting for them all the way! I really like the art style, it's exciting and loud but not in your face. I can't wait to see what else they come up with!
The actual skits don’t make sense to me on a comedic level. Not sure if that’s just a cultural barrier or not, but I can appreciate that the characters are laughing. I don’t love the art style when they’re crying and such - too exaggerated - but otherwise it’s ok.

It’s fun too see owtt trying their hardest to win and then not getting it quite yet first try. We see the two mcs balancing school and comedy. They get help by the most unexpected people too! I can’t wait to read more!

This is already losing its spark for me. I don't really find any of the comedy bits funny, but it could be a cultural block due to translation or something.
Volume two is a repeat of volume one with less heart.
Azemichi is a teenage boy with a gift for writing comedy. His shy personality keeps his classmates from knowing how funny he is. He keeps his identity as Everyday Shijimi, a winner of comedy contests, a secret. When a comedy fan at school, Taiyo, discovers Azemichi’s secret, Taiyo does his best to convince Azemchi to perform comedy together.
Taiyo had success as a child actor and Azemichi’s mom and sister are a fan of his. Can the two boys convince Azemichi’s family to let them have a shot at performing comedy instead of concentrating on college entrance exams? They are challenged to win an upcoming comedy contest on their very first try. When the boys get to the contest they realize the routine they had planned wont work. They try to come up with something new in less than an hour and have no time to practice. With the attitude of win big or go home, will it carry them to success or will they flop big time.
Fans of zero to hero manga and sports manga will enjoy this series. Getting to know Japanese comedy styles and performance competitions is interesting too. Drama kids will love this series as well.
I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I genuinely enjoy this manga. It is a nice break from romance and action. I think the plot is interesting as there are some secrets it seems that both characters have. It is a beautiful story about growing and healing. I will most likely keep up with this manga as it keeps my interest.
Book 2 is even funnier than book 1 which makes me excited for the series to continue. The dynamic between the comedy duo is definitely solidifying and things are starting to fall into place. Looking forward to see where it goes!
