Freelance children’s writer and editor, based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Anna Claybourne writes children's information books on all kinds of topics: science experiments, ancient history, the human body, things to make, the environment, robots, evolution, art, fashion, Shakespeare and many more - as well as retellings of myths, legends and Shakespeare plays, and rhyming stories.

She studied English literature at university, but has always been interested in science, technology and art and design as well. She loves making and crafting, especially sewing, and her house is full of fabrics, craft materials, tools and books. Other interests and passions include camping, cats, outdoor swimming, news and politics, and music - she plays the trombone and has played in many different bands and orchestras, including performing live on a John Peel session in 2002 with Scottish band Ballboy.

Anna was born and grew up in Yorkshire, but has also lived in Canada as a student, Iceland as an au pair, and Costa Rica as a conservation volunteer, where she saw tarantulas, tapirs, monkeys, sloths, crocodiles and giant katydids. She now lives in Edinburgh with her two children and two cats, Skye and Socks.

"Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home." ~ Anna Quindlen

Not all people will say yes to reading plays written some centuries ago with the kind of old language that might make even native English speakers feel a little bit uneasily challenged. Introducing them to young(er) readers?

A set of 'good luck' might not cut it.

What might help is giving this book a shot.

The ten William Shakespeare's plays in it are retold by Anna Claybourne in a style that is shorter and easier to read for young readers. Each part is accompanied by inspiring illustrations from Elena Temporin.

Its content also has a nice overall balance.

Those ten plays come from three out of four groups of William Shakespeare's works: five from the Comedies, three from the Tragedies and two plays from the Romance group. They were clearly chosen with young readers in mind.

After all is read and done, it still has more to offer!

There is the synopsis of all but two of the other 28 Shakespeare's plays (according to my edition) in the end of this book. Altogether, they are nice layers of introduction to these great literary works which might even benefit the not-so-young readers as well!

[★★★½]

My children ate this book up! They were able to follow the stories well. Each story was about 15 pages long with illustrations on some pages. Reading these stories was more like reading a fairy tale.

Well worth the read.

Updated: This book needs to stay in our continually reading section. The kids love this book. We read from it regularly. Jared said, "I love reading Shakespeare mom!"

I'm currently doing a read-aloud Stories from Shakespeare with my eight-year-old, and it's bloody marvellous! Apart from smallish text on dark-coloured ground on some pages, that is.

He is loving it, so long as I do plenty of funny voices, with hilarious lovestruck swains and scary ghosts and imperious kings. The stories are engaging, short enough, and well-written, distilling the essence of the story without losing unnecessarily much in the modern-language rewriting.

As soon as we'd finished Romeo and Juliet, he turned to me and said, "You know what would be cool? Romeo and Juliet, with guns."

So guess what we're in the middle of watching now?

(His first comment, shortly into the movie: "Everyone's a poet in this, aren't they?")

This is a great collection for children and adults, to introduce them to Shakespeare. The illustrations are beautiful, and the stories are understandable for children but without losing the essence of the original to oversimplification. My 9 yr old son has spent hours enjoying this book.

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

Who doesnt't know Shakespeare?
And from those who know I bet not everybody knows all or read his books/plays, except those plays/stories that very well known such as Macbeth, Cleopatra and Anthony, Midsummer Night's dream (my favorite) or the famous Romeo and Juliet.
This book is just like an introduction to some of shakespeare works, consists of 10 stories (the author made it very short yet you can still feel the essence of those stories) and some synopses of his plays.
This beautifully illustrated shakespeare book is suitable for school kids that want to know a glimpse about shakespeare's work without having spent much times.
For me, well i like the original version better.
But then again, to refresh my memories I felt that this book quite helpful.

I love the Bard. So it was very difficult for me to dislike him in a story format geared towards kids.
Now the unfortunate part about this particular book is that the 'Kids' reading this, must be at least a 5th grade reading level. The reason I say that this is unfortunate, is because that Shakespeare can be introduced at a much younger age. That had been my hope with this one, as Usborne usually does try to cater the subject to a broad spectrum. This was not the case.
Having performed in Shakespeare, having worked with kids on Shakespeare, and having read all arguable 39 titles by the Bard, this was a disappointing read, esp. if the author was trying to make Shakespeare appeal to younger audiences. Even as an adult who loves the Bard was bored.

I love the summary in plain English of Shakespeare’s plays. My favorites are Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummers Nights Dream, As You Like It, The Comedy of Errors, and Much Ado About Nothing.

This is such a great introduction to Shakespeare for kids. It was interesting the choices of plays they chose to retell.

This book was very good. The stories were very accurate, given the fact that they had to be simplified. Very nice, and very easy to understand.

I got this book to see if I might be interested in Shakespeare stories but I wasn't. The book was great just some parts for me were hard to follow but I did like the illustration on every page of what is happening. From time to time when I need a story this book is good but thats probably because I got this when I was 10 and now im 15 with way more knowledge. But then again, now we read like half the stories in school as a class reader which is kinda cool.

This is a great book for getting to know Shakespreare plays. It has short versions of ten of the storys and then has a synopsis of the rest of his plays at the end. I really enjoyed some of the stories and may even look at reading the whole version of a couple.

This book has EVERY play by Shakespeare. It is true that not all the stories are written completely, but if you would like to get an idea of the plot of one of Shakespeare's plays, then reading this would be great.

this was a very Fun read :^) it added a sort of area to the stories that you can't quite get from just reading a play through the images and the descriptions :^)
