Cooking the Dutch Oven Way

Rate this book
In this expanded 2nd edition, Woody offers over 180 recipes and includes a new section with recipes for a healthy heart. The original book entered six printings since 1977. This edition is newly designed with a glossy four-color cover. The Dutch Oven has been used for centuries to cook for large groups and families at home and on the trail. If used properly, the Dutch Oven can be used to cook for individuals. Using a Dutch Oven takes finesse and fire-side savvy. It is more than just a pot. You can bake in it and fry in it. In addition to meats, fish and wild game, you can prepare vegetables, breads, cakes, pies and mouth-watering desserts. With a unique temperature control chart and sections on the selection, use and care for the Dutch Oven, this cookbook is a valuable resource.

I am a complete novices Dutch oven cook so this book was appreciated. It's a fast read with good simple to follow basic information. Some of the recipes I don't see myself ever trying it has a Game section on how to cook up game birds and animals such as coon. I do appreciate the menu suggested list but wish it had more Gluten Free options. But now I have the basics I can play around with my own recipes.

Loads of recipes, helpful photos; and ways to use a Dutch oven, not just on an open fire, but inside a standard home oven.

I was hoping to find some good recipes for camping. I didn't find any that looked appetizing. I did take away a couple ideas - pizza in the dutch oven, quiche in the dutch oven, baking bread... but I won't use any of his recipes...

I also disagreed with his briquette requirements for various temps. I think it needs to be doubled!
