The rich tradition of country cooking, the distinctive taste of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, and the heritage of rural America are all elegantly captured in Jack Daniel's The Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook. Included are more than 350 recipes, stunning full-color photographs, and stories of the people, places, and traditions of Middle Tennessee.
This is not a cookbook for beginners or corner-cutters. Each recipe takes time to prepare and many of the directions are implied. In some instances entire steps are skipped. These are recipes shared by real cooks who’s ancestors have been making these dishes for generations. They probably learned the recipe while tugging on their grandma’s apron and what seems automatic to them needs explaining to someone meeting the recipe for the first time.
So far the Grilled Lemon Chicken (p. 120) is our favorite, with the Black Label Sirloin Roast (p.107) coming in a close second! Unfortunately, the Macaroni & Cheese Puff soufflé (p.111) thudded rather than puffing. It tasted yummy and my mate said he would love to see it again for dinner, providing I make it “puff” next time. The thing is, making it puff is dependent upon understanding the directions. Apparently, “light bread crumbs” means crumbled fresh bread (not dried or toasted). Dried bread crumbs are too heavy.
I can't wait to try some of the truly delicious-looking recipes in this book. I think you need to be an experienced cook to follow some of the recipes though - the 'method' section is distinctly lacking in many areas and it seems to me that many of them are 'suggestions' that are open to interpretation.
Never mind that though. Who knew that Jack was so versatile? I've used it on ham before but honestly...
First on the list - Jack Daniel's Brownies and Glaze...om nom nom!
Edited to add: the brownies were flaming amazing! Second batch will be in the oven tomorrow... But I was right about the method section - it near enough read "get ingredients together, heat the oven to this temperature, make brownies". I worked it out though...:D
Not every recipe includes Jack Daniel's liquor. This collection contains typical recipes from the folks of Tennessee from breads and soups to main dishes and deserts. Historic photos are embedded throughout the book.
