my favorite thing to do is to look for relatively obscure books because sometimes there are some great hidden gems among them. this manga is one of those. it was enjoyable and has great potential but it was very evident in the first volume that the potential was a budding one at that point. i’m gonna continue to see if it really gets great especially since this has been animated.

This first volume of Code:Breaker wasn't necessarily bad, but had very little that made me want to continue reading.

The mystery surrounding Rei and what Code:Breakers and Deviant Breeds are should, in theory, have inspired me to want to know more. The difference between Rei when he's trying to act like an ordinary high school boy and Rei when he's being a merciless killer is remarkable – he's so hard to read that it's tough to say for sure whether his small kindnesses towards dogs and children were true kindness or inspired by something else. His vague explanation about Code:Breakers, that they're “nonexistent” and can't be punished by the law, imply that he's working for powerful people, but this first volume only shows readers the barest sliver of whatever is backing Rei's actions. At this point, it looks like he gets ordered to go out and kill people, with no restrictions put on him. If other people die while he's going after his true targets, well okay then.

Of course, Rei is no ordinary assassin – he has that hand of fire, after all. There are indications that Sakura may unknowingly have some connection to the organization Rei works for, and she may also have special abilities of her own . At this point I am...still only mildly interested.

Part of the problem, I think, is that Kamijyo lets readers know some of what was up fairly early on, and then doesn't move things much further for the rest of the volume. The basic template is this: Sakura bursts in on some bad guys who laugh and indicate they will do Bad Things to her. There is a quick demonstration of their willingness to do bad things to other decent people (or animals). Rei appears and kills all the bad guys, painfully, after saying “An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth. And evil for evil.” Sakura can do nothing but feel horrified and outraged at the murders he has just committed. It was somewhat repetitive, so, if I do continue on with this series, I hope that Kamijyo shakes things up.

And also lays off the emotional manipulation a little. I sniffled a bit after the scene with the first quivering dog, thought Kamijyo cheated with the introduction of the second quivering dog, and was completely unmoved when the drug-addicted guy was dragged on-page and dropped a cellphone featuring a photo of his formerly happy family, complete with adorable munchkin.

One thing I did like about this volume was the way Kamijyo poked fun at the potential for romance between Sakura and Rei. Sakura's intense focus on Rei and determination to keep him from hurting others is frequently mistaken by her classmates for romantic interest. When another guy tries to fight Rei for Sakura's affections, Sakura puts herself bodily between them. Everyone around them thinks she has feelings for Rei and is trying to protect him, when, in reality, she's worried that Rei might kill anyone who tries to hurt him. The mismatch between what everyone thinks is going on and what's really going on is worth a laugh.

At the moment, I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series. I think it has the potential to grow more interesting, but this first volume didn't really grab me.

I saw the anime for this forever ago and always wanted to give the manga a try, especially after learning the mangaka was a woman. It's a really fun start to what is a pretty dark manga with some humorous moments

Untuk vol. 1 - 26 (tamat) :

Gambar : keren, baik adegan pertarungan maupun tokoh-tokohnya~

Cerita :
Di bagian-bagian awal : seru nih!
Pertengahan : ini maksudnya apa ya...
Mendekati akhir dan akhirnya : apa-apaan~
Secara keseluruhan : (╯°

Maksudnya sih satu : "berteman dalam mengalahkan kejahatan". Tapi prosesnya itu... *tariknapasdalamdalamsiapngerant*

Dan bendera serpis kipas berkibar kencang~ ( ̄  ̄|||)

Tipe bacaan yang cocok jika hanya menginginkan adegan aksi saja ^ ^

This was quite nice to read in one reading. Some parts of this were cliche and stereotypical, but overall, the book was a pretty entertaining read.
I might see if I can access more volumes of the series online, since my library is closed right now, so it was kind enough to make me want to read more.
If you liked death note, I feel like this discusses similar themes, with what justice means and who is allowed to carry out that justice and morals and stuff like that. That's the parts of the book anyway that I found the most compelling.
I have to say that I was expecting something very different when I picked this book up: code breaker is in the title, so I was expecting more of a hacker or spy situation. I also have to say that the name code: breaker doesn't make sense, since it has nothing to do with the whole premise of the book. May be explained in later volumes, though?
I was also very frustrated with the whole teenage drama that was going on in the book too. Like, I wish that Sakura's friends would just knock it off and act more mature.
That is to say: this book was good, but not great—purely middle of the road for me.

Code Breaker T.1 (/26) by Akimine Kamijyo (né au Japon en 1975) 192 pages – Pika édition – 02 Février 2011 –

Looking for series to give to a friend, I keep finding things I'm not sure she will like but that I really enjoy. I guess there are worse things in life.

I'm slightly annoyed that the girl who is supposed to be really skilled at martial arts keeps being rescued by the boy. She should be more self rescuing!

The book is a bit cliched but nonetheless, I loved it. The anime was well adopted too. However, I loved reading the book more than I did watching the anime.

With Code: Breaker, we have a fairly typical urban fantasy that never really hits any high points in this first volume. The main characters are irrational and poorly written. The story is inert and has far too much tell over show. And the illustration work is very unimaginatively 'seinen'. Honestly, I was bored.

Story: Sakurakoji is the perfect girl at her high school: highly interested in martial arts, beautiful, lively, and smart. But when she witnesses thugs being burned alive at a park - she sees one boy at the center of the conflagration. A boy who shows up at her school the next day and acts quite oblivious to her accusations. But soon she will discover he has a strange power and even more chilling mission.

What Code:Breaker tries to do is create an edgy, morally ambiguous tale. What we have, unfortunately, is a a nearly misogynistic story of the perfect girl overreacting constantly and creating scenes with her 'suspicions'. it got old watching this supposedly smart and proactive girl being lobotomized by the mangaka.; I began to wonder if the story was written by a 12 year old boy as a Marty Stu.

The characters were odd, unlikable, and irrational. Anti heroes can be fascinating (e.g., Death Note) and make you want to follow them. With this story, I was kind of hoping the thugs succeeded and took both main characters out and ended our misery. This is standard shounen-manga fare here - fan service, stupid 'smart girl', and mysterious guy with super powers. Marty Stu ensues.

Wow - pretty dark stuff in this series. Basic premise is that young female student, Sakura, witnesses a murder while traveling home late one night - a young man about her age calmly setting several men on fire with a strange, blue flame. But when she investigates the murder site the next day, there is no sign of any murders. And who should be the new transfer student that arrives at school that day? But the boy she saw commit the murders (Rei). Sakura lives in a world very much like our own reality - gangs, murders, drugs. The difference is that she would risk her life to try and do good by others and uphold the law in the process, and the mysterious Rei holds himself accountable to no laws and kills others if he feels they deserve it. So far, we have only seen Rei kill murderers, gang members, etc., but volume one concludes with the police showing up to help during a rough fight and Rei turning his flames on them so that there are indeed no witnesses to his brand of justice. However, we'll have to wait for volume 2 to see if Sakura is able to prevent the innocent officers from also being killed...and also to see how the story progresses. Volume 2 promises to show us more about Rei's secret organization and give us more background on Rei himself. We get hints that Rei might be a decent guy in his own way, but the glimmers are so tiny in volume 1 that you almost feel like you've imagined a moment of kindness rather than actually witnessed one. And I'd like to see what it means that Sakura is a "deviant species" that is immune to Rei's strange blue flames....

Akhirnya setelah Samurai Deeper Kyo bertahun-tahun lalu...

If I have to read about how “delicate” and “frail” everyone thinks Sakura is one more time I think I’m going to throw up. It’s like they’ve never heard her speak because she is very blunt, kind of crude and she doesn’t even try to hide it, yet she somehow has her whole class fooled into thinking she’s some delicate flower. It’s still a good start with lots of potential and I love the trope of the pretty girl being an absolute martial arts monster, but it’s the first volume and I’m already over everyone’s crush on Sakura. And of course because she doesn’t show any interest in boys, even friendship (because the boys in her class only want to date her not be friends), the moment she shows any interest whatsoever in the new transfer student everyone immediately assumes they’re dating. Even when the dialogue really has to be shoehorned into that misunderstanding.

I already own the second volume so we’ll see once we get more into the Code: Breakers part I’ll feel compelled to finally finish this series.

Really underwhelmed by this one. An excerpt from my review below; the full review can be found here: http://www.playbackstl.com/comic-book...

"If Kamijyo played his hand right, Code: Breaker could work as a philosophical battle between Rei and Sakura, between wreaking Biblical vengeance (“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and evil for evil,” as Rei puts it) and preserving the rule of law. But that battle never really takes because in Code: Breaker’s world, there are no shades of gray: in this first volume, Rei kills nothing but the very worst of the worst, cartoonishly evil gangsters who cackle as they stomp on old people and (I shit you not) kick defenseless puppies. In that context, you can’t help but root for him to burn more and more guys alive, Sakura’s protestations be damned."

This reminds me of a mystical Full Metal Panic. It's both funny and serious. The funny parts comes from social ineptness by the main character Sakura Sakurakoji for example she wakes up in the park after witnessing her classmate Rei Ogami kill a bunch of thugs there the night before. She gets to school late and Ogami is acting like nothing happened.
Sakurakoji: Aoba, I never went home last night. Could you cover for me by saying I slept over at your place?
Aoba: E-eh?! Wha--?! Why?!
Sakurakoji: If you want a reason, then ask Ogami!
So of course the whole class thinks they spent the night together.
Rei is not as likeable as Sousuke but that's probably because he keeps killing people and has no remorse at all. Sakura is a great as Kaname tho.

I actually finished this series and it was okay, filled with lots of actions and comdey. I got attached to loads of characters in this story. But
although I did like the ending, I still found myself being a little sad about it. Maybe because it wasn't what I would have liked it to be. I gave it 2.5 stars because how the series closed the whole thing up has a big impact on how I will feel about it overall.

Currently in the midst of this series.. and I must admit it took a while to get there. The beginning of this manga is dreadfully dull but I continued in the hopes that it would get better later on, and it did! So just bear it and read on. For the first volume, though, it could have done better to draw more readers in.
