"Gaspard on Vacation" is one of two titles launching the Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa series. While on vacation, Gaspard escapes from his family's endless visits to museums and embarks on his own exciting adventure. He finds a little red kayak--the perfect fit--and takes off to explore the canals of Venice, until an unfortunate run-in with a gondola stops him
The children liked this simple story of a mouse named Gaspard who goes on an adventure in Venice. This story is too simple for me and it doesn't tell enough about Venice other than showing landmarks.
I loved this book when I was younger, the drawings of the setting and those of the characters in particular, and I'm really surprised that it isn't more popular. I mean my parents probably had to read it to me a thousand times and I have much fonder memories involving it than I do with most of Dr. Seuss's books.
I like the reaction of his parents when they found him. It teaches children that sometimes their expectations about their parents reactions are not true. I am not sure if the illustration will catch the children reactions because they use dark colors.
I was either going to give this book five stars or three stars. I liked the story but didn't love the illustrations for the age preschoolish age group it was designed for.
