Group Fifteen operative and ex-MI6 officer Charlie Cooper is working undercover as a political negotiator. Attending a conference surrounded by diplomats, businessmen and lobbyists, nobody would suspect what he really does for a living. Also in their midst is Aisha, a Saudi activist whose protests against human rights abuses have made her an enemy of her country’s regime.
It isn’t just Cooper visiting Cairo under false pretenses. A hit squad has been sent to eliminate Aisha and their reputation precedes them. Cooper knows all too well that these men mean business and is given the order to take them out. But when he is told to use Aisha as bait, he starts to question what he is doing.
The hunt is on and the sandstorm is heading their way. Can Cooper eliminate the assassins before they reach Aisha? Can he keep her safe from harm without any means of escape?
Mark Dawson was born in Lowestoft and grew up in Manchester and Chicago. He has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, "The Art of Falling Apart" and "Subpoena Colada" have been published in multiple languages.
He is currently writing two series. Soho Noir is set in the West End of London between 1940 and 1970. The first book in the series, "The Black Mile", deals with the (real life but little known) serial killer who operated in the area during the Blitz. "The Imposter" traces the journey of a criminal family (think The Sopranos in austerity London and you'd be on the right track).
The John Milton series features a disgruntled special agent who aims to help people to make amends for the terrible things that he has done. Mark, as a child of the 80s, will freely admit that he watched a lot of The Equalizer in his youth.
The fact that John Milton and Ziggy were in this book is just made the story good I had a goofy smile as soon as they were introduced 😂🤭.
On a serious note for an introduction to a Cooper series this was good I’m not sold on Cooper’s skills though, he is Number 11 but then I feel like Milton took the shine away from the MC, Cooper seemed like a supporting character ,I guess that was dependent on the mission but still I’m not sold on him , I’ll have to wait for the next book
Apparently this is a new series spin off, but to be honest, I'm a bit confused.
Charlie Cooper is Number 11 in The Group. For those of us that have followed John Milton, we are very aware of The Group and their numbers. What confuses me is that in this novella, John Milton is back in The Group as Number 1. So, we are talking a while ago because lots and lots has happened since John was Number 1.
Why is that important? It isn't really, it just confused me. Why start a new series so far in the past? And not to get too deep on this, but in the current timeline when John is fighting against the people trying to kill him from The Group, is Charlie involved? Obviously, they met and worked together so they are aware of each other. Ugh, I'm making this too complicated.
Let me just say this. This was a very short story that introduced us to Charlie Cooper. He seems like a nice guy. The story was not too complicated and the storyline had a quick resolution. I listened to this on audio and while I generally like David Thorpe, I could NOT STAND the way he did the voice of Ziggy. Again, Ziggy is a character that we have come to know and love in the John Milton series and he NEVER sounded like that in my mind.
The introduction of a new character in the Group 15 saga is a pleasant experience, akin to a trusted friend introducing you to their good friend, and surprisingly, this person is certainly worthwhile to know. These books are usually used as a set up for an even larger reveal in the main Milton saga, this is shaping up to be something special. I like Charlie, he's a personable guy, not as dower and sober as Milton, and I'm referring to his personality, not his drinking. This story is a nice intro, nothing too elaborate, it sets the stage for whatever is to come but leaves enough to be fleshed out in the future. Cooper is well qualified for his position in the Group, coming from the intelligence side of the spectrum rather than the military side. It's a contrast that I'm sure will have a great impact on the upcoming Milton novel since he's out in the cold once more and the mole in the Group is making life miserable for our favorite alcoholic. I'm looking forward to reading more about Charlie and seeing exactly what Dawson has in store for one of my favorite characters. As always, the results speak for themselves, and they speak very well.
Not Quite a Milton Story but its Milton Adjacent with Group 15 Operator 11, Charlie Cooper
Milton gets to play a role here but as lead agent, A taciturn trainer as the Group's #1 to Cooper's #11. This is Cooper's story and likely the beginning of a new series by Dawson within the Group regime. Even Ziggy has a cameo role. Cooper may be trained as an agent but his MI6 experiences aren't too far behind him that he's entrenched in the Group. He's on assignment in Cairo attending a conference when he inadvertently shares an elevator with an assassin from Saudi Arabia who tortured and killed a source Charlie had cultivated. The experience left Cooper shaken somewhat and his surprise brought up old, well memories. He notified Control who sent Smith, the Group's #1 that lead to more information than Cooper knew about the old nemesis.
Good Group 15 material for fans of Milton, he's here still in his prime as #1. Should be an interesting series if Milton in his John Smith persona and Ziggy continue to make appearances.
I wonder where the author got the idea of an international conference in Egypt from? Just a joke - he's always taking things from the real world. However, there are often badly thought-out details in these books. I know the author reads all of his reviews, so I'll detail this one. **Spoiler alert** The ramming of a car in a sandstorm with 50 feet of visibility simply doesn't work - especially when it rolls three times from the impact. I even worked out the details but deleted them from the review. Am I nit-picking pedant? Yes, but these reaction times are something I've been trained in, so they stick. Happy to discuss at the next SelfPublishing show, or by email. I also thought £2.99 was a bit much for the length.
Introducing ex MI6 officer – Charlie Cooper. Set in Cairo, Charlie, now working for Group 15 Intelligence, adopts the role of an unassuming/retiring type negotiator when he attends a conference of diplomats and business men that is also to be attended by Saudi film maker Aisha who is a public enemy to the Saudi Arabian hierarchy. An enemy of the Saudi regime because of her stand against human rights abuses in her home country. There is a Saudi hit squad looking for Aisha to eliminate her. As well as the storm brewing in the conference, there is a major sandstorm about to hit Cairo, and Charlie must complete a task set by his superiors to get the dirt on a US Senator who despite being a goody two shoes to the public has a dark side. A casual encounter at his hotel sets Charlie on the trail of the Saudi hit squad and there are many twists and turns as the story unfolds as Charlie becomes engrossed initially in an unsanctioned case. He is joined in Cairo by other operatives from Group 15 and together they track the hit squad as the Saudis attempt to dispose of Aisha before she reveals all at the closing ceremony of the conference. That is when the sandstorm hits, and all hell breaks loose with the Saudis attempting to capture Aisha and Charlie determined to have revenge against the leader of the hit squad. A well composed story with plenty of action with twists and turns as the story unfolds. Moses
In this short novella focus shifts from John Milton No 1 of Group 15 to No 11. On a job in Egypt ex MI6 officer, now No 11 Charlie Cooper runs across an old adversary who is part of a hit squad in country to terminate an outspoken women's rights advocate. As a massive sandstorm barrels it's way to Cairo the lines are drawn and a deadly game begins. Charlie Cooper is an easy to like protagonist and probably the most relatable of Dawson's leading persons. The action was clear, quick and concise with a certain grim individual making a cameo appearance. This was a little on the short side and I look forward to finding out more about Charlie Cooper soon.
As I am writing this I just realized Mark Dawson is the most read author of all the books I have read. Over 30 books now and what I always have appreciated is how easy his stories read through. I start a full book and before I know it I’m already a third of the way through. He consistently introduces characters but throughout his series’ he adds layers to those characters. This short story is no different and I encourage others to seek out the John Milton, Beatrix, and Isabella series.
( Format : Audiobook ) "What shall I call you?"" Whatever you like. "
Mark Dawson is a pleasure to read, clean, crisp writing with slow growing rounded characters, interesting plot lines and plenty of feasible action. Sandstorm introduces the reader to a new character who had moved from MI6 to Group 15 and also includes an appearance of the old favourite, John Milton, Set in Cairo at an international conference, there is a woman to save. an enemy to kill and a sandstorm to endure.
A quick read novella and, despite my ,not liking the narrator, David Thorpe, recommended.
A new character in the John Milton and group fifteen universe. Milton makes a cameo, but I can't place it in the timeline. This is a novella and therefore pretty short. There is one quick mission, which is pretty straightforward. What I like about Mark Dawson's books compared to some of the other spy thrillers is the focus on spy craft instead of constant action scenes with massive shootouts.
Charlie Cooper is the main character here, altho John Milton & Ziggy also appear. It is a short adventure, but with all the suspense we expect in a Dawson novel. Cooper is undercover when he runs into an old nemesis known for his brutality, and as the killer of Cooper’s former asset. Milton comes on scene as no.1, but plays a small role as Cooper gets his man. Looking forward to more!
Mark Dawson is the an exceptional author who takes you on a journey with a new Group 15 character, Charlie Cooper, number 11. He is on a mission when he gets sidetracked. Charlie meets Ziggy and John Smith, number 1. I recommend this book because it is intriguing and exciting. It is a fantastic read. I look forward to the next book. Happy reading!
A good read, but just very short..more of a novella. Its a story about espionage involving assassins. A new series for Dawson's focusing on Charlie Cooper who is in the MI6 world of John Milton. I thought the character was fine and some of the other characters in the story were very good as were the situations and details of the spy scene in the Middle East that was the setting for the story. I like Dawson's world enough that I'll probably check out the next installment of the series.
"Sandstorm" by Mark Dawson features John Milton, a captivating hero who used to be a dangerous assassin but now wants to do good things. He's like a modern-day knight, fighting bad guys to save innocent people, and readers will cheer for him as he overcomes challenges and makes tough choices. Milton's journey teaches us about bravery, redemption, and the power of choosing what's right, making this book an exciting read.
Injustice can stop people having a choice or a voice
Coopers mission was to be a delegate at the conference do the job to the end but it didn't go quite to plan recognising an assassin from his past distracted him from his mission. A thriller that directs you one way yet he felt it was his duty. Number one was sent to do the deed until the sand storm hit then it was like blind mans bluff.great book fantastic story teller Mark Dawson takes you on the mission too... Recommend
Cooper is a good character, with a lot of fight in him. He’s at a trade conference in Egypt when he see an assassin and wonders who is going to died. He goes to check out the room of one of the assassins associates and the associate returns and a fight breaks out. The associate is killed. Then the real action start. Cooper goes after the assassin, who is after the human right activist. The book is interesting and is a quick read
Not a bad read but not as good as most of the other Mark Dawson books, but that could be because its a novella and not as much space to develop the story so it felt a bit rushed. i read Scorpion last and it was terrible, not written with the same pen i thought. But this is more like the real thing.
This was excellent series to begin with Milton being No.1 and Cooper No.11. So the plot was excellent and Cooper proved to Milton he could handle the job. With Cooper able to get his revenge against Aziz was a win win! Mark excellent job as always !!! 10 stars plus!!!! Thanks, Carl Clause
Great new character but I have to admit it was a bit strange to have Milton as a secondary character. The storyline was interesting and the plot built to an exciting and suspenseful ending. I definitely recommend adding this book to your too be read pile.
I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.
Have yet to and in reality don’t anticipate any time soon not getting thoroughly engrossed in a Mark Dawson novel….. The characters, the plot and the locations all come together to make the most enjoyable reading.. Looking forward to more Charlie Cooper and Group, stories. Thank you Mark and keep up the excellent work 🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was so excited to read this and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved being introduced to a new character/hero and was just excited to see a couple of guest appearances from some OGs too, lol. I’m far too old to use that language but I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to book 2.
Compelling and fast paced novella about a British agent who is tasked with stopping a really bad guy who works for the Saudi regime. This Saudi agent tortures and murders people who have displeased those in power. None of this seems far fetched after the terrible TRUE story of the murder of Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, by similar agents.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It took no time to read and I was introduced to a new ‘killer’ in the group of 15. I didn’t read in sequence and John Milton appears, as fearsome as ever. On to the second book with Charlie Cooper, the guy who doesn’t argue when he is told kill he does. Strange world! It was a bit like a short story.
The premise of this book is extremely interesting as more Arab women have come to realize they are so badly mistreated in so many ways. Do wish Dawson had taken the time to further explain that more. Charlie Cooper is a great agent and I look forward to reading more Charlie Cooper adventures.
This is the first I have read by Mark Dawson. The story is fine although I was expecting a twist at the end which never arrived. I also didn’t realise it was only 150 pages which makes it quite expensive. I will buy the next in the series but that’s only 128 pages perhaps by the 10th it will be a one page story!
I have enjoyed Mark Dawson’s other books and was delighted to try out s new series. It’s going to be an interesting one for me. It was fast-paced but as this is a relatively short novel I wasn’t sure it was the ideal launch for a series. That said, free on Amazon Prime Reads and so no complaints.
A look at early days group 15, an appearance by Milton and some other familiar faces. Derring do in the Egyptian sands. A great quick read, the introduction to what I’m hoping might be a new series 🤞🏼 Charlie Cooper may not be Milton but he’s a good second
