Fleetwood is a cookbook writer specializing in the foods of Latin America. She runs Iziko lo Lwazi, a nonprofit craft project based in Cape Town, South Africa
This books would generally get a higher rating because the recipes are easy for almost any cook and the variety is interesting if not completely bizarre. The 2 comes from the fact that fully 30% of the recipes are from Brazil, Argentina, Peru Chile and Paraguay. With the word CARIBBEAN front and center, one would think it was a book about Central and South American Caribbean food: Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica. None of those interesting dishes are even represented. So if you are looking for those foods, THEY ARE NOT IN THIS BOOK.
This book should be called: We had to come up with something really fast and didnt have enough stuff to make a South American cookbook, so we threw in random Caribbean and Mexican dishes to confuse you. Good luck!
I gave it the stars I did because some of the recipes use interesting flavors that I would not have normally put together.
To sum up: if you get it for free, don't set it ablaze. There's interesting stuff, but you won't reach for this book first. 😉
Great variety of interesting recipes from the region. Nice photography. Things in this book make you want to cook immediately. My mum keeps asking me to photocopy recipes for her. My eldest son got on my nerves constantly "borrowing" this book so I bought him his own and he is very happy and I have peace in the kitchen. Highly recommend this book.
These seem pretty dated. Also the pictures are unappetizing. It reads like it was written by UK tourists in a hurry. My favourite line “Use plantains. If you don’t have them, substitute bananas.” It was a recipe for plantain chips.
We picked this one up at Borders in the bargain section. The recipes are colorful and beautiful, and I'm excited about trying a lot of new things. I particularly like this series because the beginning of the cookbook has a lot of information about different foods and their importance to the local culture.
Jenni Fleetwood has written many cookbooks. Her style is more home-cook than gourmet and she likes to explain things well. Hermes House cookbooks illustrate every recipe with a photograph and sometimes one for each step in making the dish, so this is a perfect marriage of author and publisher.
