First grade story about the big red dog, Clifford, on his way to the Halloween parade and what happens along the way. It has short sentences and colorful artwork on each page. There is a word list at the end.

Despite what it says here on Goodreads, this book was originally published in 1999, not 2000. It's aimed at beginning English readers who are already familiar with Clifford. This was apparently written to tie in with the short-lived PBS series, Clifford the Big Red Dog. The artwork more closely resembles the simplified style of the series, and not the more delicate work of the original books from the 1960s and 1970s. (There's also a circle on ghe cover urging you to watch Clifford on TV).

I love Clifford. I was given, or bought through Weekly Reader, three of his books. I think I sold them or gave them away in the 1980s, and regret doing so. So, my love for Clifford colors this review somewhat.

The book has a nice balance of silly and a serious message, in which hard work brings rewards. The kids of the neighborhood work together to make Clifford's entry in the town's Halloween parade very special.

Granted, they really didn't have to work hard, since this was the shortest Halloween parade in the world. Still, a good time was had by all -- except for the normal-sized tan dog on page 27, who seemed to be seeing Clifford for the first time.

I loved Clifford as a young child myself and I am so excited that the books are becoming popular again for my kids to enjoy. They fell in love with Clifford because of the new Clifford movie. Anyways, once again Clifford is up to his fun antics that make kids laugh everywhere. The illustrations in this book are colorful and go along with the other books in the series. Clifford is still the big loveable big red dog that is the size of a house. This book is adorable and my kids really thought it was so much fun what he was for Halloween. I highly recommend adding this to your list to read for Halloween.

I actually own this book and used it to teach opposites to my students around Halloween. In this story, Clifford is trying to decide what he wants to dress up as for the Halloween Parade. While he is deciding he takes notice of all the other children in the neighborhood dressed as different things. During my lesson, I created little bats with two words presented in the story (some that rhymed and some that did not rhyme). I had two trick-or-treat bags, one with a happy pumpkin face and one with a sad pumpkin face and had students decide which bag to place the bat. If the words rhymed they went into the happy face, and if the words did not they went into the sad face. This is a great story to teach opposites and also engage audio, visual, as well as kinesthetic learners.

We all guessed the costume, naturally, but it was a good early reader.
