Mary Berry is an English food writer and television presenter. After being encouraged in domestic science classes at school, she went to college to study catering. She then moved to France at the age of 21 to study at Le Cordon Bleu school, before working in a number of cooking-related jobs.
She has published more than seventy cookery books (her first being The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook in 1970) and hosted several television series for the BBC and Thames Television. Berry is an occasional contributor to Woman's Hour and Saturday Kitchen. She has been a judge on the BBC One (originally BBC Two) television programme The Great British Bake Off since its launch in 2010.
My Gran and Grandad bought me this book when I got my first house, and I still use it today, mainly because the back has a reference section that includes conversion tables and meat cooking times based on weight.
The first section covers the basic tools and equipment a kitchen needs, then it goes chapter by chapter covering eggs, vegetables and meats, as well as recipes to try. In this way it's not so much a recipe book as a how-to book with recipes that demonstrate your new skills, whether that is roasting a chicken and making stock out of the carcass or knocking up a Victoria sponge.
Every kitchen needs a Mary Berry book, and this is a great beginners book ideal for first-time cooks.
A perfect book for beginners - lots of step-by-step photographs and a variety of easy recipes. This was a god-send for me when I found it! I have never failed one of these recipes, and now I'm a better cook!
