When a fleet of unmanned aerial drones disappears, the U.S. Vice President turns to Matt Garrett, still nursing the wounds he suffered in the Philippines. The situation worsens when a terrorist commandeers Garrett's jet and a former Iraqi General with a startling link to Garrett's brother emerges from hiding. Matt discovers that international terrorists have kidnapped the the world's leading expert on nanotechnology, who has enabled the missing Predators to locate, track, swarm, and kill...all by themselves. Meanwhile, the enemy has launched a flurry of attacks throughout America's heartland. The country is on edge as citizens wonder whether the terrorists have the capacity to deal a devastating blow with weapons of mass destruction. But Garrett is beginning to suspect that the true enemy may be all too close to home.

“Rogue Threat” eBook was published in 2016 and was written by A. J. Tata (http://www.ajtata.com). Mr. Tata has published seven novels. This is the second in his “Threat” series.
I received an ARC of this novel through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence and some Mature Situations. The story is about a Special Operation operator, Matt Garrett. He is still recovering from the wounds suffered during the mission described in book #1, ’Sudden Threat’.
Islamic Terrorists are discovered to be planning new and potentially devastating attacks against the US. Garrett is put on their trail. He is also searching for missing drones that it is feared will be used to deliver weapons of mass destruction agains US targets. Two beautiful young women enter his life helping him in his pursuit of Terrorists, but he is not sure if he can truly trust either. They are not the only players in the US intelligence structure that he is not confident in.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 10 hours I spent reading this 338 page thriller. I liked the characters. I also liked the good job the author did of keeping the suspense up until near the end. There was plenty of action and intrigue throughout the story. The cover art does a good job of implying the threat from the missing drones, but the story goes far beyond this. I give this novel a 4.8 (rounded up to 5) out of 5.
A complex plot involving devastating attacks on the US mainland. The aggressors are a very varied bunch, but they are up against Matt Garrett, newly recovered from all the pain following the death of his brother and his own injuries, and burning for some revenge. The maze of intrigue that he has to wade through brings great action and suspense.
Another "stop-the-terrorist" novel...included in this one is the involvement of an organization that reaches the highest levels of government that's OK with the terrorist attacks...the Garrett Brothers heroes must stop the terrorists & ferret out the internal threats as well...decent, but not top notch in this genre
What a fantastic series. Books 3 and 4 await me. The motif of The Rolling Stones throughout coincidently parallels the current spy intrigue of Crossfire Hurricane. Love the patriotic brothers as they honor our country.
I enjoyed this book more than Sudden Threat but not as much as AJ Tata's other series. It is well written full of action and a great page-turner. Highly recommended!!!
Mr. Tata, I salute you. You write a very realistic scary book that is head and shoulders above some other writers. Every situation in your story is more than believable given what we, the dumb public know of international warfare. Excellent book and I look forward to reading all of your books.
Wow the plot of this book is fantastic. I've heard General Tata say that he's worry has always been what is the worth thing that could happen to his men and in this book, he truly explores what's the worst thing that could happen to America. I loved all the action and felt like I was reading a Clancy. My only critique is that there were too many characters to keep track of. I definitely look forward to reading more in this Threat Series.
There's just too much going on, with little benefit from some of the side stories The main characters are excellent and the main story line is a good read, I just wish the book was more focused
This is fiction but one day this could be reality. A crazy man in power and the connections to destroy the thing he cares most about. America must be ever vigilant not sheep following the Shepard.
You let Meredith die? And Peyton just up and dissapears? And Lantini's actions? Well, I have no pony in this race but, my goodness, how about a little more 'feel good' in these stories? Pretty incredible story, almost too incredible. I guess that is why it is called fiction.
An experiment with a short review format which I may use some of my future reviews:
Military thriller concerning a true axis of evil who, in partnership with a French-Iraqi terrorist try to destroy the USA. Standing in their way are a CIA shooter and a Army Special Forces soldier. This is the first book I've read in the "Threat" series. The author has impressive credentials and the amazon reviews appeared to be overwhelmingly positive. It wasn't what I expected to be honest. This book was decently researched, I will give it that. But that alone does not make a good thriller as some of the earlier Brad Thor books demonstrated, before he began to mature as a writer. Far from being written by the next Tom Clancy, the plot of this thriller appeared to be more akin to a Roger Moore era James Bond film updated for the Post 9/11 era and with none of the zany laughs. While the first section of the book is somewhat well executed, and down to earth, the second part goes off the rails to put it bluntly. The terrorist attack which the climax is built around is over the top and highly unrealistic, compared to what other authors like Brad Taylor have come up with. Chemical weapons, UAV's, enough manpower to take over the Eastern Seaboard and topped off with two nuclear bombs, in a genre which requires plausibility, the plot for "Rouge Threat" had none. Characters? Really hope I would find something good to say but nope, sadly not. The cast in this book is let down with some bad execution of standard tropes and conventions. The main antagonist makes the outdated, Bond villain mistake of gloating too long at the wrong moment despite being one step ahead and doesn't take the practical route of gutting the first main protagonist when he has a chance. The female characters aren't much better, fulfilling roles/character traits which have become stale. The main female characters, either incompetent, have the stock hysterical breakdown (where the male character is the one to reassure them), are just plain in over their heads and torture themselves over lusting after the main protagonists. Speaking of the main protagonists, I found their characterization rather unsatisfactory. First Matt Garrett. Full of machismo and a lot of arrogance, he makes some pretty elementary mistakes which complicate his efforts in the book and seemed a touch immature. As for his brother, the secondary protagonist, he didn't have enough defining traits to make him stand out. "Zac" came off as rather bland and a bit of a footnote. Overall, a disappointment. Maybe the other books will be better but this is way out of the league of Thor, Flynn and Taylor. The plot/narrative may be well researched but is laughably ludicrous most of the time and I've seen much more likable, sympathetic characters in other books. Is this by the next Tom Clancy? I think not. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Wow, this book really impressed me. A.J.Tata is such a talent, and you can see why so many readers have given him 5 star ratings for his books. There are plenty of twist and turns in this story, and I enjoyed the complexity of it. This is certainly a book you can immerse yourself in. Matt Garrett is haunted by his Brother Zach’s death in the Philippines. Especially after Zach saved Matt’s life when he was stabbed and almost over run by enemy forces. Even though Matt was recovering in hospital when Zach was killed, it still hurts him deeply that he wasn’t there for his brother. The Vice President has asked Matt to investigate a number of missing aerial drones, which he believes Jacques Ballantine maybe involved in. Jacques is an ex-general from Saddam Hussein’s Republican Guard. Who is now living in Canada running a fishing guide service, and the US believes he doing a lot more than just that. What Matt doesn’t realise is that Jacques would like to seek revenge on him as pay back for Zach killing his brother in the first Iraq war. The US is no doubt kicking itself for handing over Jacques in a prisoner exchange after the war, as they now believe he is the mastermind behind the recent terrorist attacks in Minnesota, New Jersey and Charlotte. In a well-orchestrated series of bombings, a lot of Americans lost their lives. The President would like Jacques eliminated and Colonel Jack Rampart believes he has the right man for the job. Colonel Rampart has a secret Special Forces operator who has been recovering after almost being killed. He was in a coma, and since coming out of it, and training at such a high level he’s become one of the most elite fighting men the Colonel has seen. Since coming out of the coma he can’t remember his past, and they truly believe he can pull this operation off, before Jacques creates anymore terror on the US. If you enjoy Action Thrillers then you will love this book.
Another exciting read from A. J. Tata. While it's an hair-raising and entertaining story, the sad thing is that I can picture some over-zealous politician scheming to do exactly what this story told. While the good guys win (which isn't really giving anything away), would we be so alert in real life? That's enough to keep me up at night for many nights to come.
Good book I didn't know this was book 2. Might have been better to read. Weak ending was a huge disappointment. The story was in detail but ending left me wanting answers. Waiting for book 3.
A.J.Tata has some incredible writing abilities. You are going to be hooked on the Threat series as soon as you start to read one. I have lost a lot of sleep but I so enjoyed this book series!!!! Many thanks, Amarillo Turtle
