Christine Merrill has wanted to be an author for as long as she can remember. But one thing stood in her way: touch typing.
Six weeks spent on an IBM Selectric in her Sophomore year of high school proved that she would never be able to produce one readable page of manuscript, much less several hundred.
Twenty years passed, and she found ways to pass the time: marrying her high school sweetheart; having two sons; and taking an assortment of jobs in professional theater costume shops, including a miserable year and a half spent styling wigs for a certain hamburger-selling clown (who shall remain nameless, since I don't want to incur the wrath of a major American corporation) and a couple of weeks working on a TV movie with one of the sexiest men alive (whose name I'm happy to drop: Mark Harmon!).
During that time, someone invented word processing, and a reliable spell checker.
Christine returned to her childhood dream, only to discover that there was more to the whole writing thing than accurate typing. The next years were spent learning to tell stories that people might want to read, and trying to find someone who wanted to buy them. Her chance came when she won the RWA's Golden Heart Competition for unpublished manuscripts. The winning story, soon to be known as THE INCONVENIENT DUCHESS, was bought by the contest judges, the delightful editors at Mills & Boon, in Richmond, Surrey.
Christine is now busy writing her fifth book, and is more than slightly jealous that her manuscripts get to visit England, while she stays home in Wisconsin
I loved being able to read these Undones! in print format. Each story was incredibly well written. The shorter word count really made the authors tighten up their stories. I found it perfect for reading in bed. I read one a night and ended up getting a good nights sleep for a change.
Lately, I'm strapped for time. This anthology is perfect for ravenous romance readers in my situation, a little sweet, a little spicy and lots of sexy in a short format.
Seducing a Stranger – Christine Merrill – 4/5 – Victoria is a war widow who is very loyal. She is looking for some revenge/understanding regarding her husband’s death and seeks out the only survivor of her husband’s troop Tom Godfrey. Posing as a prostitute she tries to draw him out and make him admit his guilt – but the only guilt he feels is about desiring his commander’s wife, because he is completely innocent. Things get out of hand (and very steamy) and before long, Victoria is going to have to admit her game. A bit of insta-love and a lot of forgiveness, this was a really sweet and sexy little story. And Tom is an absolute gem of a hero – not an alpha. He has that masculine vulnerability about him and his happiness is a perfect counterpoint to the heroine’s guilt.
The Viking’s Forbidden Love-Slave – Michelle Willingham – 3/5 – Aisling is an Irish noblewoman kidnapped by a Viking warrior, Tharand. He has taken her as a slave and plans to give her to the king in exchange for his sister. But along the way he begins to doubt that he’ll ever be able to give her up. I usually approach these with a bit of caution, expecting some degree of rape in a story like this. There are some forced sexual interactions, but no actual forced intercourse. It’s a fine line, but this was not offensive. There was a bit of insta-love and the characters knew practically nothing about one another by the end of the story. So I would have preferred a bit more exchange between them. But it was a good story.
Disrobed and Dishonored – Louise Allen – 3/5 – Jonathan is posing as a highwayman stealing kisses as a bet. When he comes across Sarah, she is trying to think of a way to escape a horrible betrothal. So they agree that Jonathan will ruin her. But they don’t expect to fall in love. This was an engaging story, but it felt flat for some reason. The characters had very little depth, fell in love way too easily and without knowing anything about each other and Sarah reminded me of a child. Unfortunately, we get very little of Jonathan’s viewpoint and I think it would have made the story even better.
A Night for Her Pleasure – Terri Brisbin – 3/5 - Not much to this - length or content. Simon is big and not very sophisticated and he's come to care for the wife of his arranged marriage very much. So he's terrified he's going to be so overcome with lust that he'll hurt her. Elise is very boring - I read this a few weeks ago and I remember next to nothing about her. The problem is somewhat convoluted in the first place, especially when we're just told it's the problem. Perhaps I might have believed it a bit more if I'd been able to experience their growing love and desire or something. And so much of the story is just them sitting around at the wedding breakfast talking about things. It's a bit of a let down. But it is still pretty sweet story.
The Unlacing of Miss Leigh – Diane Gaston – 4/5 – Graham was injured in the war and is disfigured as a result. He is horribly lonely and wants a companion (as well as a woman to bed). So when Margaret mistakenly answers his ad, she initially refuses, but he is convincing. And she rather owes him a debt. So she becomes his mistress. This was a very enjoyable beauty and the beast type story. Graham believes himself to be monstrous, but he’s not over the top in his insecurity really. It’s believable. Margaret was also a level-headed and realistic woman. I liked them. My only complaint really is that this is the type of story that is meant to be a full-length novel. This really could have been so much better if it had more!

Anthology with five stories. Christine Merrill´s Seducing a Stranger, Victoria, a widow needs to know what happened with her husband and tries to trap the one who survived. Tom never forgot the wife of his captain, and now she´s here.
Michelle Willingham´s The Viking´s Forbidden Love-Slave, Tharand has captured what he thinks is a substitute for his Kings slave, and a way to free his sister. He didn´t count on his feelings for Aisling.
Louise Allen´s Disrobed and Dishonored, Miss Sarah doesn´t want the man her father had decided to give her to, and finds an unconventional way to get rid of the unwanted attention. Jonathan, a temporary highwayman helps her out.
Terri Brisbin´s A night for her pleasure, a newlywed couples first night together.
Diane Gaston´s The Unlacing of Miss Leigh, when Margaret answers an add for, what she thinks is, female companionship, she finds her childhood saviour in need of some saving himself. Captain Graham suffered a terrible damage to his face and has withdrawn from everybody. Can he get help?
Loved them all, great short stories with historical fluff & smut.
Collection of five sensual stories: (Reviewed as I read them)
Seducing a Stranger by Christine Merrill
The Viking's Forbidden Love-Slave by Michelle Willingham
Disrobed and Dishonored by Louise Allen
A Night for Her Pleasure by Terri Brisbin In this case, sensual means a historical erotica story. Takes place in 1066. Their romance is touching. It's the author's use of language to describe sex that gets humorous. He has... privy parts, she has... mons, and he wanted to... swive her. lol
I'm generally not one for historical romance but I do love short stories. The stories I read (a night for her pleasure and unlacing of miss leigh) were good. I didn't find that I had any wanting or need to read the other 3 stories, but I quite comfortably read the last two.
I found it refreshing the way that the female (and male, I suppose) characters were naive. There was a different type of self-consciousness then the kind I normally encounter in contemporary romances. I liked it.
Terri Brisbin - A Night for Her Pleasure - Solid satisfaction within genre boundaries. Surprising how much repetition and cliche can arise in such a short length, particularly since the writing is relatively good.
Diane Gaston - The Unlacing of Miss Leigh - Aww, so sweet. Quickly worked out, but in a compelling way. Really liked the main characters.
Looking for something short and sweet, and I’ve found this. But I did not enjoy reading it… maybe not the ideal historical romance for me.
A collection of five sexy stories from five different authors. I do love "The Unlacing of Miss Leigh" by Diane Gaston. I thought that was the best of the group. Really loved the characters. Sweet and divine!
The rest? So-so.. and thank God, they have great ending. HEA! Yay!
The stories were hit or miss, some of them took some getting into and just as I got invested in the characters the story was over. Trigger warning of kidnapping and implied assault for one of the stories.
