Really two and a half stars. Contemporary gothic suspense novel written in 1967. Pretty typical plot for the time, but still entertaining.

Engaging without actually being good, this boilerplate Gothic romance delves deep into the Scottish side of Canada, and feels just as second rate as that sounds. Everyone runs around acting oddly, the heroine ignores all red flags, there is mild gaslighting, multiple attacks, and an ending that ties everything up neatly. It is completely digestible and utterly forgettable.

A real gothic mystery from the writer of the tv series Dark Shadows. The heroine had me a little sick of her weaknesses and silly fainting spells but it was a different time for women when this was written. It had everything a gothic mystery should have, though. Light romance, no sex, no bad words, no undue violence, mystery, a dark atmosphere, and the main character in danger of losing her life. A good read!
