The Demon's Angel

Rate this book
The Demon’s Angel is a young adult novel that intertwines myth and reality. Laced with science fiction and a touch of supernatural, The Demon’s Angel follows Neha Exordous as she finds herself in the middle of a war between angels and demons. Torn between what she knows and what she is told is the truth, she realizes that this age-old struggle is far more complicated than a fight between good and evil. Neha was excited to enter her sophomore year in high school. That was until the boy she went out with sprouted wings, and Lucas, the man who raised her since she was a baby, turned into a demon. Neha is far from human. She is an angel, the natural enemy of demons. An angel raised by a demon has never been heard of before, which makes some angels see her as a threat. Neha not only has to prove that she did not know anything about demons, she has to prove that she is on the side of the angels. And she is. So she thinks. GENRE

Neha was a normal high school girl living in Philadelphia and she was just like any other girl, or so she thought. Her parents died when she was a baby and she was raised by her guardian Lucas. Everything changes when she meets the new boy in school Daniel. We soon find out that Lucas is a demon, Daniel is an angel and Neha discovers she’s an angel too.

An angel raised by a demon is an odd thing considering that the two have been at war for generations. Neha is taken to heaven by Daniel to be trained to fight demons and convince the others that she didn’t know she was an angel being raised by a demon. She is seen as an outcast by the angels and has to prove she is valuable but Neha’s upbringing gives her a different opinion on the war between both sides. Will Neha figure out what her new role in the universe will be?

The Demon’s Angel by Maya Shah is a Y.A. novel in the tradition of the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books. Neha is a girl who finds out she wasn’t who she thought she was and has to deal with a truth that she didn’t believe in. I love how complex all the characters are in this story, they are nothing like you would expect angels and demons to be. Maya Shah has taken an old mythology, made it her own vision and turned it into something original.

My only complaint about The Demon’s Angel was that it was a little light on action. For a Y.A novel I would have expected it to be faster paced. This is a character driven book and it does a great job of establishing some fascinating characters. Neha is someone that anyone who has felt like an outsider can relate to and it will be interesting to see how she changes in future books. This is the first in a series and it lays the foundation for what looks to be a fascinating story. I liked that Heaven was a different place then you would expect and some of the angels come across as being shady, especially the lead angel Michael. It’s the same with the demons, they show that they have a good side and aren’t necessarily evil. In Neha’s world everyone is a shade of grey and she isn’t sure who she can trust. Neha sees the world differently and I’m looking forward to seeing where her story will go as she finds out what kind of person she wants to be.

Neha doesn't know she's an angel. And she doesn't find out until she's ripped away from her guardian, Lucas, who reveals himself to be a demon. Though the angels take her to heaven, it's far from comforting. Her only friend is the guy/angel who helped bring her here -- her black wings and the fact she was raised by a demon seem to mark her with a stigma not easy to overcome. Neha is torn between finding a place with her own kind or trusting in the love and care Lucas provided her. Either way might just tear her apart.

I loved the idea of this book, and found the story interesting enough. I liked the characters, and the reading was smooth and easy.

Here's my problem, though: the story fell short of its potential. The writing was incredibly sparse, with more telling than showing, which made it difficult to really immerse myself. Because of the telling, the story clipped by and felt empty. The first part, particularly, seemed like a bit of a black hole filled with people. The wings seemed to disappear at times, even though they needed a jelly to retract them, and Neha sheds her former life with hardly a glance back.

The ending held no revelations, despite the flurry of secrets from all sides. When I put the book down, I was a little disappointed. I wanted more, and the book just didn't quite come through for me.

It wasn't a horrible book, and I didn't consider it a waste of time, but I'd hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for any sort of depth. Light, easy read? Sure. Pick it up. Have fun. I love angels, and as angel stories go, this is certainly an interesting take.

I loved the concept, the idea of this novel. I had a phase of reading anything angel-related so it's only natural that I wanted to be all nostalgic and pick this one up as well. As far as the idea goes, this novel didn't disappoint!

When it comes to the characters, I have to say that I liked Daniel and Liz, two angels, best. Daniel is the one finding Neha on earth and, obviously, he feels protective of her from the start. Not in an insta-love kind of way though! At least it didn't feel like that to me. I like the way he tries finding his path between the ways he's used to and the unusual circumstances Neha finds herself in.
As for Liz... That girl is bad-ass! She's been humiliated in the past, yet finds a way back to being happy and fighting for what she wants and believes in. It's admirable, really.

Because even a tiny pawn stuck in a corner on the board is capable of causing checkmate.

I couldn't really connect with Neha. Okay, her guardian - Lucas - betrayed her, lied to her during her entire life but yet she's more eager to believe the angels. The ones who abducted her to heaven, pretty much keep her prisoner and don't do a thing to answer her questions. Those she believes while writing Lucas off completely.
At first, I understood. But after a while I just... How can she care so little about the person she lived with her entire life that she simply wants to fit in with the angels and barely looks back? And then all of a sudden she turns around, distrusting the angels. It just... Felt off?

Speaking of a sudden turn-around. Liz, a fellow angel, is pretty horrible to Neha at first. Then, poof, let's be besties! No, just no. Things like that need to grow and I felt like it was lacking just that. Growth. Everything just appeared, happened, was without anything really building up to it. Not just Liz' attitude, but also events in general, certain behavior that felt random to me.

It was like he and I were sharing a secret that I didn't know about.

All in all it honestly was a pretty enjoyable read. Despite my remarks, I did fly through the novel and ended up liking it.

3 / 5!

"I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book." This book was fast pasted. Loved the whole angle where she is a changed angel because she was raised by a loving demon. Great read. Loved Daniel. Loved the ending cliffhanger tells us more greatness will come.

Intensely unique

First, the concept of the story, drew me right in. I couldn't wait to read it. An angel being raised by a demon, how enjoyable is that? I am a huge fan of supernatural work, and this one, I found it both intense and incredible. First, Shah, pens a great story. The character Neha is something very remarkable, she has depth and grows as a character, especially when she feels she has to prove herself. She thinks she's proving herself a good angel to the other angels, when in fact she's also proving it to herself. It has the right touch of a great back story, so make sure you read the Prologue. It sets the tone for the entire book, but the story evolves into more. Neha is not your typical teenager, nor typical angel.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It was entertaining, adventurous and questions a lot about what is typically good and evil. The only reason I dropped a couple of stars for the rating was because I felt there could have been a lot more explanation and world building and also because there's quite a few spelling and grammar errors that bugged me a but.

That aside, I really loved the story. Neha was a loveable character yet she is not without her flaws. My overall opinion after reading this is that I'd rather be a Demon and also, there's something else at play in this book, and a lot more to the Angel/Demon war than there seems to be.

I will definitely be reading the sequel to this when it's released.

The Demon's Angel by Maya Shah is a good read (no pun intended). The main character, Neha, is a teenager with all the usual issues and a few extra. Her adopted father is a demon who was sent to kill her as an infant. Her boyfriend just sprouted wings and it looks like Neha herself is an angel. Now the war between demons and angels is heating up and Neha has to decide if she on the side of the angels, all the while discovering who, and what, she is.

This Young Adult supernatural novel is the first title from author, Maya Shah, but you wouldn't know it. She develops her characters to make them come alive on the page.

Disappointing …. if I knew it ended how it did it would’ve been a DNF. I loved the storyline, and I actually enjoyed the book. The problem is there were way too many questions left unanswered, and no SQL in sight like the author just fell off the face of the Earth and left us hanging.
