Moto Hagio (萩尾望都 Hagio Moto) is a manga artist born in Ōmuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, though she currently lives in Saitama Prefecture. She is considered a "founding mother" of modern shōjo manga, and a member of the Year 24 Group (24-Gumi). She helped pioneer modern shōjo manga, modern science fiction manga, and BL manga. In addition to being an "industry pioneer", her body of work "shows a maturity, depth and personal vision found only in the finest of creative artists". She has been described as "the most beloved shōjo manga artist of all time."
Moto Hagio made her professional debut in 1969 at the age of 20 with her short story Lulu to Mimi on Kodansha's magazine Nakayoshi. Later she produced a series of short stories for various magazines for Shogakukan. Two years after her debut, she published Juichigatsu no Gimunajiumu (The November Gymnasium), a short story which dealt openly with love between two boys at a boarding school. The story was part of a larger movement by female manga artists at the time which pioneered a genre of girls' comics about love between young men. In 1974, Hagio developed this story into the longer Toma no shinzo (The Heart of Thomas). She was awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1976 for her science fiction classic Juichinin iru! (They Were Eleven) and her epic tale Poe no ichizoku (The Poe Family).
Moto Hagio was truly ahead of her time. Her artwork is stunning, and its beauty both complements and contrasts the dark themes she explores in this story. Describing the story as heavy would be an understatement—it's intense and disturbing. What happens to Jeremy is horrific, but Hagio never sensationalizes his trauma. Instead, she shows the insidious nature of his abuser's psychological and emotional warfare, convincing Jeremy that he is somehow to blame and should be ashamed of being sexually assaulted.
In contrast to the story's disturbing content, Hagio's imagined Boston feels almost picturesque. Her vision of England also feels fairy-talesque, drawing inspiration from various eras and images associated with the UK. I found it amusing that no one remarks on Jeremy's American accent, or that we are repeatedly told the UK is colder than Boston.
I first read this when I was but a sad sprog, and it left a lasting impression on me (i even created a playlist that i could listen to while reading this). Hagio shows profound empathy in exploring Jeremy's psyche, alleviating the story's relentless darkness through beautiful imagery—often of landscapes—and touching interactions that serve as reprieves in a story centred on abuse.
A word that would adequately capture this series is haunting, so read at your own discretion.
I love the Manga classics; Hagio Moto, Yasuko Aoike, Riyoko Ikeda, Osamu Tezuka. 70s Manga is the best and I have noticed that there is a certain something that lacks in todays manga. It's because generally everything is so cut and dry now. In a manga nowadays there is no tension, nothing that scares you to the pit of your soul... two characters meet and fall in love almost instantaneously.
This story is a love story, but it's also a story of deeply sustained abuse. It's the story of a boy who is affected psychologically by the abuse he harbored at the hands of an older man.. it is the story of rape. Except it's not romanticized. There's no falling in love with the man, in fact you really just come to hate this man. It's about the long drawn out aftereffects and how such chilling effects can haunt you for the rest of your life.
It's also a manga about redemption. Anything that the 69' era mangaka come out with is probably the most brilliant thing you will ever have read so despite it's disturbing subject matter.. it's brilliant.
The first volume of this series was pretty disturbing. However, the 3 star rating is not related to the subject of the story but rather to Jeremy's reasons.
One thing that made it hard to really sympathise with Jeremy was the fact that he so easily believed Greg's lies and deceits. I can somehow understand that since he was young and naive. But really... what chances would his mother, Sandra, have with a man sleeping with her son? What would make Jeremy think that by giving in one time and sleeping with Greg, it would appease Greg and make him marry Sandra? That it would be a one time thing, for that matter?
I've read a summary of the overall series and this nightmare is far from over for Jeremy. It was quite sickening to read how Greg took advantage of him.
On to the next volume.
Later Edit: Since the other volumes are not listed on goodreads, I'll read on and rate the series here. Bumped it to 4 stars. Currently reading volume 10.

Reviewing the entire series here. I feel a bit conflicted.
There are good parts and some not as good parts but I believe the series as a whole could have been both shortened and/or had a clearer intent in mind. Sometimes it felt a bit aimless. First part detailing the abuse of Jeremy at the hands of his stepfather is masterfully portrayed. Then the story sort of varies in quality. The middle of the story sags quite a bit compared to the strong beginning, and the twisted relationship between Ian & Jeremy as portrayed in the final parts of the manga just goes on and on, with unneccessary side plots/characters that don't bring much to the story.
Recommended especially for the first part. Easily one of the most painful, cruel and intense things I have seen in manga. The final part is interesting, but meanders too much and could have been shortened with no loss.
Zankoku na Kami ga Shihaisuru is dark, disturbing and soul stirring. Made me felt like I have read a full fledged fleshed out novel rather than a manga. Every scene is carefully crafted and I could keenly feel every emotion of the characters. I watched with aching heart how Jeremy spirals downwards the depths of hell and witness his pure mentality turned warped and as the poison from his so called parents darkens his soul and heart. It's sad Jeremy is so damaged now that he can't even forgive himself enough to love or be loved.
This manga series is artfully done in terms of visual and also in the delivery of the story. While I agree that this manga is pretty old (year 1992), yet I still find the artwork pleasing to look at. There are many special pages with beautiful metaphorical artwok that delivers strong message and feelings to its readers. I find myself staring at these pages taking my time appreciating and feeling its message within the evocative visuals. It's no wonder this mangaka won prestigious award for this masterpiece of hers. Not only her art deserves recognition but her story has so much depth. It's like I am reading a novel instead of a 2D art story.
* This is a review on the whole series. To me this series is worth 5 stars.

This is a complex manga that deals with serious issues (murder, drugs, child abuse). It's a pretty tragic story, but the characters always struggle for something better and therefore it rarely feels hopeless. It's an older manga (from 1992) and it shows in the drawing style, but it didn't feel outdated at all. I actually really liked the drawing style. It's a bit annoying that in the beginning it implies that men become homosexual because they "try it out" and become "hooked" on it. But other than that there isn't much I didn't like about it. I still haven't read all the volumes, but I'm close to the end now and have high hopes for a happy ending (I'm at ch 78).
This is an awesome manga. Sometimes a little sick but it is very emotional and you can almost feel Jeremy's pain in the story. It has about 85 chapters all i have read them all and even reread some chapters. I loved reading it but it is not yet complete. I'm currently waiting for more chapters to be updated. For me personally it's a must read. Well only for those people who can stomach some of the disgusting things it shows.
I cannot explain how much I love this manga. One of my favorite mangas of all time. One of the best I have ever read. Haigo Moto is seriously a genius.
I read a different edition from October last year to May 22,2025 this year but I have decided to post my reviews of the other edition on this edition over time. Parental advisory: Abuse, violence and brief scenes of nudity. I was skeptical of reading this story since it was stated as a "darker version of "The Heart of Thomas" " on Wikipedia. Volume 1 starts at the beginning of Jeremy's mother's funeral. Jeremy accidentally killed his mother when trying to murder his stepfather. The rest of volume takes place in Boston Massachusetts in the United States before Sandra's death and ends with Jeremy moving to England with his mother - his first meeting with Ian. A Cruel God's Reign is much darker and explicit compared to "The Heart of Thomas" but unlike Keiko Takemiya's "Kaze ki no uta" (The Poem of Wind and Trees) the abuse scenes are kept to a minimum and aren't shown in great detail. Jeremy is also aware the treatment he receives from Greg is wrong and abusive unlike Gilbert who for most of his story believes Auguste loved him. Like Eric from Hagio Moto's earlier work "The Heart of Thomas", Jeremy has a manipulative mother (Sandra) who uses her earlier grief of losing his father to coax him into doing what she wants. He doesn't seem to understand that his mother is a manipulative,"love crazy" and obsessive person very much like Eric's mother. This is becoming a pattern in works I've read by Moto. Her female characters never take accountability for anything they do. It's starting to become annoying. Jeremy is a sweet and caring child who would do anything to please his mother so even when his mother's latest lover starts abusing him he refrains from discussing what happened in greater detail to his mother in order not to upset her. Sandra met this man (Greg) the same week they had engaged. She even give a precious item that reminded her of her late husband to a man she barely knew. After Greg tries to sexual assault out of nowhere in his car,Jeremy tells his mother that Greg isn't a good person and tries to let her know this man was abusive to him. Despite this his mother decided to ignore what Jeremy was trying to warn her about and decided to try to kill herself in retaliation to Greg breaking up with her after Jeremy refused his advances. Even though there are signs of Jeremy being abused Sandra chooses to ignore her son's changes in behavior and live with this rich man. She even tries to guilt Jeremy for not wanting to move to England with her and Greg. This woman is despicable. Jeremy decided to visit Greg in a hotel a second time after this man refused to see Sandra in the hospital. Greg starts a cycle of manipulation and abuse towards Jeremy while Jeremy who feels ashamed of what is happening continues to shut every out. His girlfriend Vivi refuses to understand what Jeremy is going through despite how much he tried to tell her he didn't want to see this man. Her insecurities of not being pretty enough was more important to her than Jeremy's safety. Vivi should have realized something was wrong when she tried to have intimacy with Jeremy when ended up having a slight anxiety attack. I want to see Jeremy take his revenge and I want a good ending for him. He deserves it(so far).
Jednak polecam go osobom starszym i o mocnych nerwach, bo dosyć mocno “ryje banie”. No i trzeba zarezerwować sobie trochę więcej czasu, bo jest dosyć obszerna.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaark! but omg the art style is so beautiful! And it's handling themes such as rape, child abuse, sexual abuse and suicide with such delicacy that I have not seen in a manga for a LONG time. There is NO 'rape = love' plot and the abuse is handled VERY realistically with traumas and after-effects and how it trickles out to affect other people in Jeremy's life.
I'm not sure if this will end up being a BL/Yaoi later with another character in Jeremy's life.
The author really has done her research on abuse and it handling it in a very dark, yet strangely beautiful way. I only want the best for Jeremy, but I feel things are only going to get worse before they get better.
"Mi sta dilaniando in mille pezzi.
check online for full trigger warnings- rape, sexual assault, abuse
don’t consider it a bl, it is more of a psychological. revolves around Jeremy’s trauma after being sexually abused by his stepfather and dealing with the aftermath of causing his death as well as his mother’s. reading it can be very upsetting as you go through Jeremy’s thought process as he continues to battle with his morality and guilt
i had to stop reading a couple of times because it simply was too much, i felt nauseous at times while reading this, it’s a very brutal and raw portrayal of SA, and it never feels exploitative. jeremy is one of the best protagonists in manga, and how hagio managed to potray his emotions is breathtaking. the story is very empathetic towards him (and rightly so), especially towards his anger at the situation he finds himself in, you can just feel it, you feel every emotion he feels. very good writing and art, the imagery was brilliant. an amazing piece of art, truly. really excited to read more stuff by moto hagio
This is easily one of the best manga I have ever read. I am just going to review the series as a whole (no spoilers) because I honestly can't really differentiate what happened in each volume since I read though it a little while ago. So I follow this list on another website called "twisted beyond repair: heart wreckers," because, in case you haven't noticed yet, I like really messed up stories. This manga was at the top of the list and had like 9 stars, but I kept putting off reading it because I just really did not like the artwork. But damn, let me tell you, this story is so worth it. It does cover very very very dark themes, so it is definitely not for everyone, but it takes these dark issues realistically. You actually see the characters trying to cope with their trauma, and the result of years of abuse. Also, I would recommend not reading the summary, because the summary includes a lot of plot points that are better if they come as a surprise.
This was recommended to me by a friend and it introduced me to an amazing mangaka. She's like a film director with her choice of cells which really squeeze the intense emotions running through this story. Although it seems to tail off and then rush towards an ending, the first 3/4 are a tour de force. T Though very harsh and disturbing because of the subject matter, it's handled bravely and well, without restraint. It's definitely a classic and doesn't feel dated. Hagio Moto is a master.
It really stuck with me. I feel as if many of the readers who aren’t familiar with Hagio Moto’s work don’t understand that this was never meant to be a “yaoi”. I also feel like Jeremy’s naivety is the result of how his mother raised him and how he cares for Sandra. I dont know how this manga ever made it seem romantic, or a yaoi but it isn’t.
