Heaven's Design Team #8
Heaven's Design Team, Vol. 8
God created the heavens and the Earth -- but, little-known fact, he outsourced the animals to the office of Heaven's Design Team! This hilarious and educational manga features weird real-life animals and puts even some humdrum critters in a strange new light.
On the seventh day, God rested. But it turns out He started getting tired long before... In fact, when it came time to design the animals, God contracted the whole thing out to an agency... Heaven's Design Team! They love their work -- the giraffe, the koala, the ping-pong tree sponge(?!) -- but their divine client's demands are often vague, and the results are sometimes wild in more ways than one. Then there's prototyping and testing to worry about, not to mention Ms. Pluto's penchant for grotesque and Mr. Saturn, who just wants to make everything look like a horse... But in the end, all creatures great and small get their due!

Ok so it does end on a cliffhanger. It's not just an 8 volume series. I saw somewhere that this series was only planned for 8 volumes, but clearly not. Is it going to continue? Or has it been cancelled?

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!
Do you remember being a kid, going to the library, and picking out a handful of books about random topics from the nonfiction section? This manga series brought back all those memories for me. I used to read all kinds of informative books about stuff like spies, cats, medieval times, whatever I was feeling like learning about at the time. When did I stop doing that?
The reason this series makes me feel like that is because of how this series works. It’s about the angels in heaven who design the animals based on prompts from god. In each chapter, they have 2-5 prompts they have to fulfill. If there are a lot of them, they sometimes combine them, so that one animal has multiple qualities. Then they submit the designs and see what the design team says. If it works out, then the animal gets completed and put on earth. If not, they have to adjust their design.
This series doesn’t really have any kind of big story or anything. It’s just these angels designing animals. That’s why it feels so much like reading kids nonfiction books. Each chapter ends with an overview of the animals they invented, giving you real world facts about each animal. I was so excited each chapter to be able to read all the fun facts about the animals. Many of them I then felt compelled to look up more about, because either I learned something new about them, or didn’t even know that animal existed at all.
This series made me feel like a kid again, discovering new and exciting things at the library. Ever since I’ve started working at a library, I occasionally pick up kids books to read, because they’re just so fun. Sometimes I read silly little picture books. Other times I head over to nonfiction and see what subject catches my eye. I cannot recommend doing this enough. You might learn something new, or you might just find a little joy or nostalgia.
One of these days I’ll eventually get around to the animes for all these manga I keep reading. This is yet another one that has an anime. I would love to watch these silly angels invent animals. They’re all so stupid and hilarious. The one guy only invents horses, the one lady has an obsession with gross animals, the bug team is just one angel who cloned himself in order to have faster productivity. My favorite is the lady who leads the design team. She’s very blunt with them when they make something that has huge flaws, and will not budge despite their pleading to please please please let the pegasus pass.
If you want to have a good laugh and learn random fun facts about animals, definitely give this series a try. It’s very silly and I love it so much.
Have a nice day/night everyone!

This is a really fun manga. It’s educational, and utterly ridiculous at the same time. I enjoy trying to guess the animals before they’re revealed during the final approval. The real animal facts are also great. It sucks that this is the last volume (from what I found online, the series is on hiatus, and there are not enough chapters available to make a full volume) especially with that cliffhanger at the end. I’ll keep it in mind, and hope to continue it in the future.

A couple of the topics covered seem to be reaching (viruses, for example), but it was still fascinating. Nice to see a bit more of Mars and Ueda, who have been underutilized characters for most of the story so far.

These are always a fun read. I liked that we got the platypus in this one. Venus also did a great job with bats.
