Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

The one where Saiyans leave everybody else to dust, and the one where power levels - not just the numbers, but the concept of power overall - at long last forevermore cease to be a meaningful distinction. Frieza stands as a terrifying foe even now... but his power is rather undermined by how quickly and plainly illogically both Gohan and Vegeta can continue to keep up. I can see why he feared the Saiyans enough to destroy them in the first place.

A couple fake-outs about that, too. Gohan gets a power-up, only for Piccolo to show up before he can use it. Piccolo throws off his weighed cape and starts to fight seriously, only for Frieza to transform again before we get to see. Vegeta gets his enormous power-up, only for Frieza to transform again... bit anti-climactic, overall.

I guess this is also where the Namek Saga begins to really build up its reputation as a story arc that dragged on forever. This one final battle takes more than three full volumes. And yet at the same time, for as long as it takes, it feels... rushed. Frieza has a whole four different forms that he pulls through very quickly, with little to no screentime for the middle two.

A lot of negatives to say of this one, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it anyway. It's to Toriyama's credit that he could work with all of this and still continue to entertain us so well.

The Dragon Balls are collected, Shenlong the Dragon God is summoned, and this time THREE wishes are available - something to do with the Dragon Balls being larger/Shenlong appearing in his true form? But with Freeza on the way and mad as hell, what can the gang do - and will they be able to defeat him?

As expected, the big fuck you to the reader Akira Toriyama throws in towards the end of the last volume gets reversed pretty quickly at the beginning of this one. Without getting into spoilers, it’s an almost slapstick sequence of events that’s actually quite funny in its absurdity. And the whole Ginyu Special Force is revealed to be the joke it always was so, bravo, Toriyama, it was right in front of us the whole time but you kept us guessing anyway - they weren’t that serious a threat!

It does mean though that Son Goku is taken out of the main story once again but I’m not mad. I understand Toriyama’s decision to use Goku sparingly as he’s clearly the audience favourite and putting him in here and there, rather than all the time, only makes his appearances that much more special. Plus you know he’s the secret weapon who’ll turn the tide in the fight against Freeza so Toriyama’s keeping us from getting bored with Goku.

Once the Dragon Balls are activated by Dende, the tension REALLY ramps up. This time Kuririn and Son Gohan are given three wishes but with Vegeta and Freeza separately rushing to get their wish for immortality in, they’ve got to urgently decide what to do.

Bringing Piccolo back to life was a masterstroke - instigated by Piccolo of course but still. With him back to life, the Dragon Balls on Earth return so they can bring the others back to life again, and now he’s joined the ranks against Freeza, it’s looking like a possible victory for the good guys. I did laugh at his entrance though - his pose was very, ahem, “badass”.

Freeza’s no pushover though and has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. He deploys one in this volume but there’s definitely more on the way. The fights in Dragon Ball have been increasingly excessive but I think the fight against Freeza will be the most insane one yet!

Volume 9 is a completely thrilling chapter in the Dragon Ball Z saga with Toriyama skilfully building up the dramatic pressure, piece by piece. A wonderful read and a superb comic.

This one was so awesome, the team continue to fight Ginyu and sort of defeat him after his body switch and meet Dende and bring back Picollo back to life on Namek but then the dragon disappears because Grand elder has too and Frieza is pissed and so its an all out battle between the 4 - Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo and Vegeta and Frieza meanwhile Goku recovers! This volume was so awesome and has so much action, hard-hitting one and is like watching a movie, and is so engrossing and thrilling and just the best and especially the threat of Frieza is just wow! The scale of action is epic and its gonna get better! The art has never been better!

Gohan and Kuririn get the Dragon Balls and with the help of the native Namek boy they figure out how to use them. But Vageta and Freeza are hot on their heels. Now it's everyone vs Freeza.

Pretty good stuff.

A wonderful showcase of strength as the gang continues to stall for time while Son Goku heals from his wounds. What Gohan and Piccolo display in terms of power pushes Freeza to go through his different stages.

Previously on Dragon Ball Z

(I) Goku has arrived on planet Namek and kicked butt in the beginning but now his body got switched by Captain Ginyu.

(II) Freeza has all the dragon balls but needs the incantation to summon the dragon and heads to the Elder's house.

(III) The gang realized that Ginyu is Goku and now they need to help their father and gather the dragon balls.

That is what you missed on Dragon Ball Z!

In this volume, we immediately get sucked back into the fight with the gang vs. Goku (Ginyu). They realized that Goku is possessed by Ginyu and luckily since Ginyu cannot control Goku's body they are able to beat him up and Vegeta takes care on that end of the bargain. He figures this is his chance to kill Goku and Ginyu makes the connection that he can kill Vegeta by switching bodies. His plan almost worked except Goku was two steps ahead of him and got in the middle of the way making him switch back to his original body.

To make sure that Ginyu could never switch again, Goku throws a frog in front of Ginyu as he attempts for the second time switching with Vegeta and because he is now a frog, he is no longer have the speech to speak his magical power. After that terrible beating thanks to Vegeta, Goku enters the chamber to get cured because the gang is going to need all the power they can gather in order to fight off Freeza.

While Goku is resting, Kuririn and Gohan go on the mission to find the dragon balls and once they find them hidden in the ground, they try to summon the dragon but with no luck. Kuririn runs off to ask the elder and instead meets with Dende again who carries the message that the incantation has to be in namekian language. Once they get back to the dragon balls, Dende summons the dragon and it looks like a demon compare to Shenlong.

Freeza detects that the Dragon is summoned and rushes off to make sure he gets his wish but he fails on that achievement. Gohan resurrects Piccolo because if he is alive then Kami-Sama/God is alive too and the dragon balls on Earth is resurrected too. Then Gohan's second wish is to transport Piccolo to the Planet Namek to help destroy Freeza and he was going to make the wish for Vegeta to be immortal but by the time they were going to make the wish, the Elder had passed away and destroyed the dragon balls.

Now Freeza is pissed and wants revenge for them ruining his plans and starts a horrific battle that almost kills Kuririn and Gohan. Piccolo is trying to reach Gohan and encounters Nail who is feeble on the ground barely alive. He tells Piccolo that he is weak because is half of Kami-Sama making him use only half of his true strength. Piccolo has no time to fuse with Kami and he reluctant with Nail because he believes it will change his personality but in the end he needs all the strength and becomes one with Nail.

Piccolo arrives on time and now with the entire gang they try to delay Freeza in order for Goku to recover and kick Freeza's ass. Meanwhile all this lovely drama is happening we get a glimpse of the different layers of Freeza who originally looked like a wimpy alien boy. Then he becomes this 10 feet tall monstrosity and that is not even his true form and I am afraid to wonder what he looks like when he reaches full power, will the gang be able to delay Freeza or will he killed them one by one? Stay tuned until next time on Dragon Ball Z...

I hope by next volume Goku wakes up healed and is able to give a can of whoop ass to Freeza and end this storyline already. I enjoy writing these reviews but because it takes too many volumes for major events to occur it feels like a drag to write the same thing over and over and since Goku is practically like Superman it can be tedious. I believe part of the reason why I am reading countless volumes as if they are candy is because I am trying to wonder when does Goku become a Super Saiyan with his iconic yellow hair that we know and love? I do not remember exactly when it happens and if I am not mistaken I believe it is Vegeta who first gets that ability and then Goku. Hopefully that transformation can be performed soon.

At least this one was exciting. I'm so ready for the end of the Freeza arc because I hate it. :p Vegeta begins to wonder if Goku is the Legendary Super Saiyan because he's so far surpassed anything they've known a Saiyan capable of; but his heart is too soft. Ginyu had switched bodies with Goku but both are having difficulty controlling the bodies they now possess. With some trickery, Ginyu is turned into a frog. With the Ginyu Force defeated, Goku goes into a bubble to heal for a few hours. Or 40 minutes? I can't quite remember the oddly specific time Vegeta gives him. The Dragon God is summoned with Dende's magic words but the the wishes work different here. Despite getting 3 wishes, they can't wish back a massive amount of people like Shenlong allows for; they settle on reviving Piccolo and bringing him to Namek. Annnnd Guru dies so no more wishes! Freeza is understandably pissed and with some goading goes to his second form which is devestatingly huge and powerful. He insta-decimates Kuririn which causes Gohan to go into rage-mode and unleash all this untapped power, surprising even Vegeta. Apparently though Dende can heal so Kuririn and Gohan end up being ok! And Piccolo arrives, having assimilated the body/spirit of Nail the warrior Namek and ultimately increasing his own power. The volume ends with Goku vowing he'll hurry his healing process and Freeza promising another transformation.
An exciting volume especially compared to the last couple but I'm over the build up and just want the smack down.

Seriously, this manga pushes up my general book rating for this year - a lot.
This is my totally not-guilty pleasure, and I dearly hope the next arcs will be as good as this one - though my experience tells me great things cannot last forever ;).

Ginyu is a man... err, creature of one trick, it seems, and it's absolutely delightful to see Goku utilize it against him. I was reminded of Throg from Marvel, and I think that similarity is intentional.
Namekian dragon balls are finally gathered, Namekian dragon is evoked - and it grants three wishes. Seeing Piccolo fight for his home planet, firmly and irrevocably on the side of the good guys, was very rewarding. I mean, we knew his relationship with Gohan changed him more than the kid, but it was lovely to see this confirmation here.

Freeza continues to surprise everyone but himself; after all, he is called the most powerful warrior in the universe not for nothing. With Goku still regenerating after his stunt with Ginyu, Freeza faces against Gohan and Kuririn and Vegeta, and the three of them are clearly no match for him, even after going through several of the Saiyan "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" cycles.

This was a great read. This series continues to get better and better. This is an absolute thrilling ride. I really enjoyed the action and battles. In this volume, I got to see how good of a fighter Gohan is as he faced Freeza. Also, I really liked Freeza's transformation. It was interesting and different. I can't wait to see Freeza get defeated. I wonder who defeats him anyways. I am really happy to see one of my favourite heroes of the series come back. I can't wait for Volume 10. Overall, another enjoyable read.

I completely forgot that Freeza transforms! Finally, I get to see him in action. This is what I've been waiting for. A familiar face also returns which I'm really happy about. Gotham shows glimpses of power that I wish would come out more but he's surprisingly still four years old.

Earth’s days are numbered Indeed.boo, the Indestructible dijin of Inconceivable power, has been swinging around earth like a wrecking ball, knocking down everything In his path and turning everyone Into snacks. And that was before he transformed from a childish blob Into an evil fighting machine. There’s no telling what destruction will rain down now.The universe’s ultimate champions are desperately scheming and training to find a way to stop this abominable bouncy ball.Gohan is undergoing a bizarre training regimen with former lord of the lords. But the old guy keeps nodding off.Meanwhile trunks and Goten are perfecting their fusion dance In the room of spirit and time to become super saiyan Gotenks.A level 3 super saiyan power combo with extra special hair. But how can they make a dent In a monster that keeps bouncing back?If only there were a way they could bring Goku and vegeta and their other friends back to earth.Don’t miss the thrilling conclusion to this colossal manga classic.

Goku being one of the main characters and one of Akira Toriyama’s main priorities In the story Is constantly under pressure and thrown Into the toughest of fights. And on top of that he Is a father of two young warriors and married.Vegeta a father of one with a wife as well. These two have a lot on their plates trying to defend the world and develop/train their children to be better than them and take charge one day.Goku and Vegeta are very strong rivals and are always In competition with each other. And It isn’t always healthy or peaceful most of the time they clash heads. But that’s what makes It great. They push each other to their own limits and strive to do better than the last day.
Akira Toriyama’s style Is truly one of a kind. It's fast paced with not too much description or words.A touch of dialogue In between the cut scene’s here and there.Short and simple for the most part.Toriyama's art style Is very live and jumps out right at you.Every page you flip you get a different sense of emotion and direction with what the book Is trying to portray.Even though It might not be as deep as It seems on the surface the more you analyze the characters facial expressions and movement’s the more you’ll start to understand his message.
My personal theory on what toriyama’s drive and purpose of writing these books Is too simply keep the dragon ball name and brand alive for as long as possible.Raising the value and hype factor with each book put out will put the dragon ball family In a good place. It’s already spoken of In all parts of the world. So why stop now.keep climbing the charts and feeding the fans and see where It takes you In the end.
I’ll just say this.If you have a deep love for cartoons. It can be old or new ones you’ll fit right Into the dragon ball world and get a feel for how we do things over here.Just by flipping through the books It’s going to feel like your watching a movie but It’s directly in your hands.a home movie for less the cost. One thing I wish toriyama would do more with his work Is provide some sort of a background check or preview of some the characters who are often left In the dark.It can be somewhere on the first page tab anywhere really.Just a quick breakdown for first timers before everything starts to get crazy and the newbies get lost.

Freeza is terrifying.

Honestly up to this point I didn’t fully understand his constant inclusion of the hall of fame Animanga villains. Yeah he is very clearly strong and a threat. Similarly he is still a great antagonist and a great vehicle for stake escalation. But in this way, so was Vegeta in the previous arc. As I have pointed out with previous volumes I do enjoy his characterisation, especially with how expressive his character design is. But still, I didn’t fully understand the praise around him.

But in volume 9, appropriately titled “The Wrath of Freeza”, he starts to live up to the conversations surrounding him. Of course this is most notable in his raw power and intensity in battle, but I find him most terrifying in his sadism. His pleasure while torturing Gohan who, while a powerful fighter, is still a literal child. His character design in his transformation adopts a joker-esque smile that is genuinely chilling. Even the fact that he enjoys toying with victims he feels are lesser than himself, and obviously this is all post-genocide of an entire planet.

A planet that is the home to the now returned Piccolo. THATS RIGHT, THE FUCKING GOAT IS BACK! Piccolo has returned and literally in his first panel back alive he delivers one of his best moments so far with “so this is home…” looking over a fallen Planet Namek.

I love how he gains power in this book through assimilation with Nail, a dying Namek warrior. While this speaks to themes of teamwork through their merging, it also adds a lot to his character as he starts to become one with his culture as a way to get more powerful.

Overall this is a very sparatic set of thoughts because I’m writing most of it very much after reading, but I needed to put my thoughts down before moving onto volume 10 ! But yeah, this is really REALLY great stuff and the Freeza Arc is really shaping up to be special. Even if I don’t care much for the Ginyu battle conclusion presented at the start of the book, everything afterwards is excellent escalation and I continue to be addicted.

Verdict: VERY HIGH 9

Despite myself not interested in Dragon Ball Z I do have a large amount of respect for the franchise.

As I said before in my review of Dragon Ball, this kickstarted the trends for later Shonen manga and that's something to admire about the entire Dragon Ball series. Shonen manga series have taken elements from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot. I feel like I was a bit too old when I was first introduced to the starters of Shounen and Shojo. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were introduced to me a bit too late after I had started reading & watching series like InuYasha, Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass.

Again, I still think it's an admirable franchise despite my personal feelings towards it. (I don't hate it but I didn't love it either) It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. There are many things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.

While I don't love Dragon Ball Z, it has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.

I have the three-in-one collection so this will be for volumes 7-9.
I'm really enjoying the storyline on Planet Namek. Ever since the team got to Namek I've been so excited to learn about the planet, and the Namekians, and the new enemies. I love the Ginyu Force. They remind me of Team Rocket from Pokemon but actually powerful. Every time I finish reading I am furious because I want to read more.
I also really want to read the original Dragon Ball.

Goku verses Vegeta Round 2! Well…sort of! The action is intense and simply mesmerizing! The Dragon Balls are collected and to everyone’s surprise there are not one but 3 wishes!!! So much happens in this volume that I want to recap without spoiling information. I will say we finally get to see Freeza start to open up on just how deadly he can be. We see Freeza transform into his second stage and it is very imposing! I think this volumes most mind-blowing aspect is the fact that the cover has absolutely nothing to do with the contents of it…but if that is the weakest aspect, then it tells you just how great of a book your handling. Fun and intense in a way that will keep you glued until the very end of the book. I will say that Krillian gets off one of the most enduring attacks of the series (Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z) to this point and it is worth mentioning!

This one’s great. I love how Vegeta still can’t be trusted, but he will rely on the Earthlings when need be. The only difference is, he’d never save them. I love Piccolo so much, and it’s so good to have him back in the action. Freeza’s introduction is so strong, the animosity of his panel illustrations are so simple yet so terrifying. But there’s still that convenience issue all the time. Kuririn gets impaled and it’s a tense moment, which is completely undone by Dende’s magic healing ability which is only just now mentioned. Grrrr, why doesn’t Toriyama commit to anything? Why does Freeza need four forms?

My wife said I'm as handsome as this guy on TV, and it makes me so mad because I'm definitely not. I'm just objectively not, she's definitely wrong.

To be fair, I set her up, I ASKED if she thought he was handsomer than me. Now, I asked because I expected her to say Yes, or at the very least some version of, "Probably in a room full of 100 women, more would find him handsomer, yes," but she just straight up said that I'm handsomer!

There wasn't a right answer. If she'd said No, I would've said, "So I'm ugly." If she'd said Yes, well, here we are.

I can't believe I married such a liar. Or possibly someone with some kind of undiagnosed visual problem.

I made it! Finally we get some action with Freeza! And hhooooooo booooyyy! He's not someone you wanna mess around with! I love the unwary alliances and constant goodness if Goku. This might seem weird, but we don't see Bulma at all. Now I know she isn't a fighter, but she is on planet Namek with everyone and you'd think there would be an update one her from time to time. Either way though, it's a good volume. I am excited to continue on and see where this goes next! An even bigger battle I'm assuming. Goku! Get out there! Also, love, LOVE what they did with Piccolo.
