The Pen and the Inkwell

This is a fable about humility. We can take credit for things and have healthy self esteem, but ultimately our gifts are from God and should be acknowledged as so. This story would not appeal to non Christians, of course, but to me it is one of Andersen's best.

I have arranged my takeaway thoughts into a haiku:

"It’s more flattering
Throwing stones at rivals when
You’re both merely tools."

This is one of my favorite stories by Hans Christian Andersen. It's a short one and full of awe that we are all instruments used by God. It says so, right there in the writing, which while surprising, is not quite as rare as you may think to find Christian references in fairy tales. The Grimms mention in Hansel and Gretel that they prayed to God and trusted that God would take care of them. They did that sort of thing in quite a few of their fairy tales.

"How foolish it would be for the violin and the bow to boast of the performance, and yet we men often commit that folly... we are only the instruments the Almighty uses. To Him alone the honor is due."

Andersen makes a fantastic case for humility and service.

This book is about an author's pen and inkwell and about how each of them believe they are special because of how the author uses them to share stories that people love. The inkwell is boastful that just a single dip allows the author to bring to life a half page of characters with delightful descriptions. The inkwell continues that he has no idea how those stories of heroes, maidens, and knights just come right out of him. The pen agrees, stating that the reason inkwell cannot know how he comes up with those stories is because it is truly the pen's responsibility for thinking up grand stories. That night, the pen and inkwell are used to write a review about a violin performance the author has seen. The violin and the bow both try to take credit for the performance, but the book contends that all inspiration comes from "the light of the Eternal Master."

This one was really not for me. Maybe reading children stories as an adult isn’t the best thing to do for some people.

I personally found this story to be very boring and uninteresting. I really had hard time reading it because I just couldn’t get into the story.

The story is pretty quick read, but that’s the only good thing about this story for me personally.

The writing style in this one was very generic which every fairytale has.

School for kids: 18:109—SAY: “If the sea were an inkwell for the words of my Lord, the sea would be drained before my Lord’s words would be spent even though we brought the same again to replenish it.”

The pen and the inkstand are those who believe that their contributions should be recognized. But this short story reveals the reality. The artist who can convey the message best gets the praise even if the pen and the inkstand are essential contributors.

Jeg elsker H.C. Andersen!
