Rate this book
Get ready to blast back to the past and learn all about the Civil Rights Movement! When people think about the Civil Rights Movement, things like segregation and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech may come to mind. But what was the movement all about, and what social changes did it bring? This engaging nonfiction book, complete with black-and-white interior illustrations, will make readers feel like they've traveled back in time. It covers everything from Jim Crow laws and protests to major milestones like Brown v. Board of Education and the Civil Rights Act, and more. Find out interesting, little-known facts such as how Rosa Parks was not the first person of color to refuse to give up her seat on a bus and how most of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech was actually improvised. The unique details along with the clever and humorous interior illustrations make this series stand out from the competition.

I thought this book explored the history of the Civil Rights movement in a clear and concise way for a 7-10 year-old. Since it is for such a young age, they did a fairly good job to convey the oppression and violence that happened against those protesting and advocating, without being too graphic, but also without eliminating any mention of the violence. The text was fluid in its explanation of more difficult terms and talking about the different aspects of the Civil Rights Movement. While I would not have this be the only book on Civil Rights in my library, it is an excellent introduction for the age it's geared towards.

A great book for an upper elementary and middle school student. This touches on all important events, people, and topics without delving into too much info.

Good overview of the Civil Rights Movement as well as how things still aren't equitable for many different groups of people in America.

Great to introduce a plethora of events and prominent individuals from the civil rights movement but very surface level. There are some truths missing (no Bloody Sunday, for example) but it keeps it sanitized and appropriate for younger readers or unsupervised readers.

If you read with your children, plan to further the discussion with deeper texts such as: A Child's Introduction to African American History: The Experiences, People, and Events That Shaped Our Country by Jabari Asim
