From USA Today Bestselling Author, Danielle Girard! Her Debut Novel. Death was his art. She would be his masterpiece. They called him Leonardo-a master skilled in the art of murder. One year ago, Cincinnati was his canvas. A scalpel was his tool. And women were his works-in-progress. FBI profiler Casey McKinley was one of them, a victim of Leonardo's twisted genius. She has the scars-and the nightmares-to prove it. For Casey, a new city means a life far from the one she left behind in Cincinnati. In San Francisco she finally feels safe. Until a series of eerily familiar slayings plunges her back into Leonardo's game. Now she must catch this clever killer before he can unveil his ultimate masterpiece. Only this time she'll play by a different set of rules-hers. "Scary fast action. Hard to put down. Lock your doors and turn on the lights. This has one terrifying villain." "Well, it's 4:00 am and my heart is racing...This was a real thriller all the way through." " I lost sleep reading this book, I could not put the book down. Wow! This was a very well written book that was full of emotion, suspense and very thrilling! The characters are all great! I loved Billy and how he wasn’t a pushover and how much he challenged Casey. I also thought that she and Jordan worked great together! I really enjoyed this book even though the killer (who was so dubious and a very well written character), was truly evil and his kills were heinous. It’s always hard to read about the murders of young innocent children. I listened to the audio version and it was hard to stop listening, I just couldn’t wait for him to be found and dealt with. I finished it in less than 24hrs. I’ve never been great at writing reviews and I’m afraid that I’m not doing it enough justice. I definitely highly recommend this book, if you’re into reading about evil psychopaths and gruesome murders. I’m very excited to have found this author and I’m really looking forward to catching up & listening to all of her books. As always, Happy reading and listening! 💜📚🎧
Let me start with this: five-star reviews for third-person narratives are very rare for me.
𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝑓𝑖𝑣𝑒-𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒.
This was SO damn good. Fast-paced, suspenseful AF, original as all heck…I highly *highly* recommend this to anyone who likes crime and mind blowing psychological thrillers all rolled into one.
I found myself a little squeamish at times—this one packed a punch—but what a thriller it was!
Savage Art, the first of many literary treats by Danielle Girard. Savage Art sets the standard for chilling serial killer thrillers. The story line is original and the characters are well defined. The story who hold you interest for the beginning to the surprise ending. I have also read and recommend the 12 other novels written by Girard. Included in the group are; The Rookie club(5), The Dr.Schwartzman series (4), and 3 stand-alone novels; Chasing Darkness, Cold Silence and Ruthless Game. All 12 are extremely well written and have established Danielle Girard as one of thunderstorm tellers of our time. I am looking forward to her next creation.
This was so good, suspenseful and riveting. Though you don't learn until later his name, you know who the bad guy is and during the book you get insights into his thoughts, plans, reasons for doing. Agent McKinley was a brilliant profiler, she was working on the case when she became a victim of the very serial killer she was hunting. The attack left her broken. Nearly a year later, same same but different murders start happening to kids and the inspector in charge calls on McKinley for help, convinced it is a serial killer, McKinley realises it's her same attacker back again. What entails is the race to discover the identity of this man before one of those closest to them becomes the next victim and the killer disappears again. Everything you could want in a thriller like this. My only bug bear was McKinley's obsession with the man's shoe size. With all his disguises, it never occurs to her that even that was faked? I found that a little hard to take
Could have done without the bury your gays trope... Not to mention, the crappy display of parenting.
Nevertheless, I was enthralled by the fast-moving plot. Moreover, Casey wasn't simply the cookie-cut-out female whom every man within 10 miles instantly falls for. Naturally, that fact only increased my empathy for her as she was chased by a madman.
Danielle Girard is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! She needs to write faster though, because I have managed to get through all of her books this week and it seems most others will be inferior!
Savage Art is an appropriate title. Fast paced story. You feel yourself in every situation. So suspenseful! Had to read the story in one day! Won't let me rate it 5 STARS
This is the first Danielle Girard book that I have read and I will certainly be reading more. What a good author. I noticed that it was written in the year 2000 and that she has written many more since then, so that’s some good reading to look forward to. Savage Art had me gritting my teeth at times and screwing my eyes up at the things that the murderer was doing. The story is mainly about Casey McKinley, she is a FBI agent, an expert profiler and 1 year ago was involved in the hunt for a cruel and vicious murderer whom they called Leonardo, unfortunately she became a victim but cheated death when she was saved by her husband. However, her hands were savagely mutilated and she could no longer shoot a gun or even do everyday things and she now has a full time helper, Billy, although she has moved to San Francisco and her husband and 12 year old daughter still live in Cincinnati. Casey is paranoid that Leonardo is still out there and when there is a series of young girls found murdered after being abducted in broad daylight and bearing certain hallmarks she believes that it is him. The police ask for her help even though they know of her incapacity and she is unsure of herself. She absolutely trusts nobody but does become involved in the case. The horrors that are to unfold bring everything back to her in the most devastating way. I found this a truly gripping and thrilling book. Well written, great characters and brilliantly plotted, a real page turner. I am disappointed that this is a stand alone, because I really liked Casey McKinley and that she could be the centre of a cracking series. Maybe the author should have think about that. Anyway, full marks for Savage Art! 5/5
WOW - Danielle Girard does it again!! This book definitely kept me on my toes throughout the entire book. FBI Agent McKinley had been on the trail for The Cincinnati Butcher, a serial killer, for quite a while. Little did she know that he was now hunting her. The Cincinnati Butcher was responsible for many deaths, starting with his own mother. He would place the victims with dolls and various body parts were removed from the dolls as well as from the victims. He would also place a tattoo on their bodies with his signature, Leonardo. Agent Casey McKinley was able to survive his brutal attack and torture, but with life changing physical challenges. She resigned from Bureau because of them. What were her injuries and how did they affect her career with the FBI? As the bodies keep piling up, SFPD Det Jordan Gray is tasked with this killing spree. He asks for help from former Agent McKinley. She doesn’t want to relive the horror of the torture she endured from The Cincinnati Butcher. Det Gray is adamant that he needs her help, because as a profiler, she knows this man better than anyone. How many bodies will there be? Will McKinley get over her fear and help the Detective? This book was so riveting that it was extremely hard to tear myself away. The plot was genius. The character development was very engrossing. The scenes were very descriptive. The reader could relate to both the protagonist and the antagonist. I found myself actually hating the antagonist. You definitely will not be disappointed with this book. I absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to read the next one!!!
So its no surprise that Danielle Girard is my Queen and absolute favorite author ever, so its only natural that I start getting all of her physical books, and start the backlist. And what better way to start than with her very first book Savage Art. And holy fuck y’all. The fact that this is a debut blows my mind. The writing is absolutely impeccable. Its suspenseful, disturbing, had my anxiety high and at times my stomach in my throat. From the very first chapter, Girard puts us inside the mind of the killer, hiding in a closet, which at this point has me checking my closet all the time before I go to bed, because thats how creepy she made this man. Girard knew the assignment and did not come to play. Get this book. Read with the lights on, and check your closets.
I’m so mad that I started this back in May and just now finished it. But in my defense, life happened, and reading for pleasure took a back seat. But NO MORE! When I start a DG novel, I will finish it right away!
Savage art was the debut novel that came out in 2000 I was recently released. I had the pleasure of Danielle sending me a copy to read and review. All I can say is what the hell did I just read? This made me think of all of the episodes of ID channel do I watch and seeing everything come to life. The writing was second to none, and the book was character-driven in such a fantastic way. What an amazing story with an unbelievably amazing ending!! This book had me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last page. You have to go to your library or Amazon and pick up a copy of this book. Highly recommend!!! You have to read this from the prologue to the epilogue. After reading all 399 pages I am left speechless. Absolutely giving this 📕📕📕📕📕. My favorite crime thriller of all time!!!!
A gripping and suspenseful story with graphic scenes that will keep you glued to the pages. The horrific descriptions of the serial killer may be difficult for the feint of heart.
This story kept me holding my breath as the killer is on the loose and going after the main character, Casey McKinley, FBI profiler, who was already tormented and severely injured by the killer’s hands previously. Children’s lives are being taken by this monster in a cruel and unthinkable way. Now the killer is once again coming after Casey but now he also wants her daughter.
Will Casey be able to defend herself and her daughter from this killer’s grasp? Will the killer be stopped before he kills any more children?
This story does not stop. There are a lot of moving pieces and characters in this book, but they all come together to greet one heck of a thriller. Casey has been put through the wringer by the serial killer she profiled and her path to recovery is not going so well.
This story delves into the killers POV, Casey’s POV and also includes some other strong characters such as Jordan a police inspector and Billy (the MVP). The planning and work to solve the murder is complex and the descriptions vivid. I enjoyed being with Jordan and Casey as they solved it and the complexity behind all the pieces the killer put into play was intriguing.
This is my second book from this author and I am a fan😎
I really enjoyed this book. Between surviving a brutal attack, not knowing who the attacker was other than a size 10 shoe and the isolation and self pity Casey leaves her family and the FBI. She has hired Billy, a therapist, who pushes her to do her exercises. She is still in the valley of self pity when Jordan Gray, SFPD asks for her help. From that point, Billy sees changes in Casey, a spark of life coming back. Casey works with Jordan to find a child serial killer when things seem too familiar. Can this man they are hunting be the same one who brutalized her? Read this book and sit back for a good ride. Fear, determination, anger and love for their families push Jordan and Casey forward. Would you have the strength and determination to fight a man who nearly destroyed you?
I loved this book! It was a defiant page turner with very well developed characters. This book will be in my top 10 favorite books for 2021.
Casey was a top FBI profiler with a record for catching who she was after without a miss when the killer she was profiling for past her Surveillance team and was able to get to her and cause more damage than her family and co workers could imagine making her leave the bureau. Now more than a year later Da Vinci is back ! Casey has to decide if she can face this monster who is now killing kids and regain herself in the process.
This is a terrifying book, with suspense that just keeps coming. One of Danielle Girard’s best works. It is a stand alone novel with all new characters. The excellent descriptions of Casey McKinley’s struggles to overcome her physical and mental limitations are so good you actually feel them with her. The cleverness and ongoing evilness of the killer heightens the frustration felt by Casey and the police throughout the whole book. It wasn’t until the end that I was finally able to relax and take a breath. What wonderful ongoing suspense. You will be reading this with many lights on.
This is a good book if you want a predictable detective story where you can get the killer's perspective. It is not in depth when it comes to the kills but enough to make you squirm. I wish the story would have more in depth characters because it felt like an episode of a cop show in the middle of the season, this felt as if there were more books previously that I missed. The ending was also anti-climactic, this killer has been at large, and the FBI could not stop him for years, then he's captured within 5 minutes? It really does not make sense for this "mastermind" to be defeated so easily. It could have led to future books if anything instead of rushing the ending.

This is the third book of Danielle Girard I have read in a row. She has not disappointed me. I am thrilled she has written a bunch more books and I am off to read them. She his an excellent writer. I need not talk about her plots just know she has them all worked out well. I am so happy to have found a new Author. I was getting desperate to find a new great Author I read every day so I do have to search hard to find a new reality to live in. Thanks Michelle! On to your next thriller....
This has to be one of the creepiest, murder mystery I've read so far. I've read 10 of her books. Liked them all. This one is terrifying, as it revolves around a serial killer, clearly a madman, FBI agent and children. I couldn't put it down. It's like a 10 hour read, even if your a fast reader. You still have to sleep. The ending, your on the edge of your seat, willing her to move faster. Once again, another good read. I recommend you get the audio book as well. Well done, Danielle Girard! Kudos
This was such a gripping read! I thought this was such an easily bingeable story with a strong heroine & a truely despicable villain, and I had to keep reading to find out what happened to everyone involved.
I didn’t particularly like Casey at the start of the story - she’s still recovering from being injured in the hunt for a serial killer & she’s pushing away everyone who loves her. However, you can see the FBI agent in her start to come back as she gets involved in Jordan’s case, and I really enjoyed the working relationship that developed between them.
What a great author! I will be reading a lot more of her work. This one will pull you in and take your breath away before it's over. FBI agent Casey has a horrifying encounter with a serial killer. She is separated from her husband and daughter, and no longer works for the FBI. She has a daily struggle living with the scars and damage done by the killer. Now her daughter has come for a visit and so has the killer.
As usual reading Danielle 's books keeps you invested until the very end.The characters are realistic and intense. The excitement that I get from reading her books is sheer pleasure, although the subject matter of the story is really gross and horrific! But I love the feeling of not being able to put the book down, because I am so excited about what is about to happen next! I am onto my next book written by Danielle😁
I've read most of this authors books. This was her starter book and I couldn't put it down. She made each of the characters jump out of the page to make you not want to put the book down. The story line is not just a police thriller but a look into each character 's internal struggle with thier own fears. If you have never read Danielle Girard 's books 📚start now!!!! Highly recommend!!!!!!
No one has me scared to death more than Danielle Girard’s thrillers! Thank God I read and listen to the audio version of my books if not I would never be able to get up out of my chair since I can't put her books down. I am often find myself saying ” What is wrong with me reading these books!” My muscles tightening and l holding my breath I think this is well worth the read!
My first medical thriller. Since I don't enjoy thriller movies, I have avoided this type of book. Boy was I wrong! This story got me started on the "Do No Harm" collection. The combination of biology with psychology is very appealing to me, and the author did a masterful job of weaving a suspenseful story using just enough medical terminology to make it believable, while not so much as to detract from the story or to make it too difficult for non-science professionals to follow.
I’m so disappointed by this book, I’ve read other books by the author and loved them. I was honestly never this confused while reading a book, this is a standalone but I felt like it was a part of a series that I never read before. There was just too many characters and things happening that I couldn’t keep up from the very beginning. It could have been an amazing book I know but it was just too complicated to understand anything…
I didn’t give this book a five star, despite the fact I loved the suspense and ending twist. As with all of this authors books, the number of pages never reflects the actual number for the novel. Instead there are sometimes as much as 50 pages of introduction other next book. This to me is very annoying. I like to read the last page, feeling satisfied I read the book and reflect on the story told.
