The tasty gingerbread man is on the run after the baker heard a voice in his oven screaming 'Let me out!' He duly did so and off went gingerbread man!
Singing 'Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man.' A hungry young man joined the baker and his wife in the chase and as momentum gathered, a cow, a horse and then a fox joined the chase. Frightened of being eaten, Gingerbread man just wanted to avoid them all so he raced on and on.
None of them could catch him but the fox proved helpful as he assisted gingerbread man, who could not swim, in crossing a wide river. But the alliance between gingerbread man and the fox grew difficult as the fox had his eye on eating him and ... well it is all there beautifully illustrated by Anje Rieger for everyone who wishes to read the sad ending!
I have read this so many times this week that I can recite it word for word. Good thing its enjoyable to create different voices for all of the characters when reading it aloud to small children. (They also absolutely love when the gingerbread man gets eaten at the end?)
