Abigail Backworth Maldon, the widow of a drunken husband killed while climbing out another woman's window, is in no hurry to remarry. Determined to salvage the family fortune, she tries to pair her niece with a suitable, wealthy husband. With his title and charm, Kipp Rutland seems a perfect choice. But to her great distress, Abby finds she can't stop thinking of him.
Kasey Michaels is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than 100 books (she doesn't count them). Kasey has received three coveted Starred Reviews from Publishers Weekly, two for the historical romances, THE SECRETS OF THE HEART and THE BUTLER DID IT, and a third for contemporary romance LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (that shows diversity, you see). She is a recipient of the RITA, a Waldenbooks and Bookrak Bestseller award, and many awards from Romantic Times magazine, including a Career Achievement award for her Regency era historical romances. She is an Honor Roll author in Romance Writers of America, Inc. (RWA)
Kasey has appeared on the TODAY show, and was the subject of a Lifetime Cable TV show "A Better Way," in conjunction with Good Housekeeping magazine, a program devoted to women and how they have achieved career success in the midst of motherhood (short version: "with great difficulty").
A highly praised nonfiction book, written as Kathryn Seidick, "...OR YOU CAN LET HIM GO," details the story of Kasey and her family during the time of her eldest son's first kidney transplant.
Kasey has written Regency romances, Regency historicals, category books including novellas and continuities and a few series "launch" books, and single title contemporaries. She has coped with time travel, ghosts, trilogies, the dark side, the very light side, and just about everything in between. Hers is also the twisted mind behind her ongoing Maggie Kelly mystery series starring a former romance writer turned historical mystery writer whose gorgeous hunk of a fictional hero shows up, live and in color, in her Manhattan living room – to melt her knees, to help her solve murders, and to leave the top off her toothpaste. And, says Kasey, she's just getting started!
A widow short on cash decides to set her niece up with a wealthy man. The widow almost immediately (of course) finds a perfect young, wealthy, handsome man who also needs to marry, but she ends up propositioning him herself. What follows is a marriage of convenience that turns into something more. The book's fairly novel for a romance (in my reading experience at least) in that it focuses on making a relationship work after marriage and a previously experienced heroine comes right out and says she enjoys sex and had a good sexual relationship with her deceased husband. (Amazing!) However, why do deceased husbands who actually have sex with the heroines always have to be drunken philanderers? (Argggh! It is okay for a woman to have more than one satisfying relationship! It is!) I did love the hero's comic relief best friend though. He was the best thing in the book.
I'm so glad that the second book in the series is about Kitt, Viscount Willoughby, who is the friend of Merry and Jack from the first book Waiting for You. He's also been in a hopeless unrequited love situation for Merry. He decides he needs to be married before the other couple return from a sojourn in America, not wanting their pity, and starts to view the young debutantes. Edwardine, an empty-headed young lady catches his eye first, but Kipp is soon more interested in Abbie Backworth-Maldon, the girl's chaperone. The Backworth-Maldon tribe is beset by poverty and eccentricity, but it doesn't stop Kipp; he only wants a marriage of convenience anyway. But Abby is exactly what Kipp needs. I do love Ms. Michaels' stories and this was another fun romance. There's clever banter and fun absurdities that entertained me greatly. While I'll always love her Romney Marsh series the best, I'm enjoying the London Friends series a lot.
Abigail Backworth-Maldon is a widow who was left penniless by her worthless, embarrassing husband. His death, not only left Abby humiliated, but also responsible for his whole family. She sees only one way to save herself and her husband's family: marry off her extremely beautiful niece to a rich, titled gentleman. As she and her niece are walking in the park, her niece catches the eye of the very rich and gorgeous Kipp Rutledge, Viscount Willoughby. The fates are with them. Or are they?
This story has several dense, but lovable, relatives, some meddling friends, and some jealous, evil enemies that keep the reader on one's toes. The plot is light, but perfect for a weekend read when one wants a laugh or two and a happy ending.
Kasey Michaels always delivers witty, saucy dialogue, and this book is a great example. This is a "be careful what you wish for" tale that keeps one turning the pages, and looking forward to the next book by this author.
Abby is a 23-year-old widow who rides herd on her deceased husband's crazy family. She is in London in an attempt to snare a rich husband for her empty-headed but beautiful 17-year-old niece.
Kipp, viscount of Wiloughby, has decided it's time to honor the deathbed promise he made to his mother and marry. He decides Abby's niece is "good enough" (one beautiful, mindless debutante is as good as another) and sets out to pursue her. However, after four days of courting the niece, Kipp proposes to Abby. Abby is independent and intelligent and poor, so Kipp is sure she will agree to a marriage of convenience. He likes her independence, as he's sure she'll provide an heir and then allow him to life his life as he sees fit.
The only problem is that Kipp wants to present a "love match" to the world to convince his childhood friends, Merry and Jack, that he no longer carries a torch for Merry. So, Kipp and Abby spend time together, make love and without realizing it, fall in love. There are some bumps in their HEA, but it all works out (of course). Cute and fun!
A very good Regency romance. A marriage of convenience becomes extremely convenient. I always enjoy the lesser players with all their many quirks. A pleasant experience watching as hidden fears, insecurities, and lies are exposed and resolved so delightfully.
I may be biased, but I haven't read a Kasey Michaels book I didn't like and this was no exception. I didn't put it down from start to finish and throughly enjoyed this story. With a interesting, zany cast of secondary characters and an unexpected twist or two I was lost in the story and look forward to the next in the series!
This is an author that I have read a lot of and have added her books to my 'keeper' book shelf. Most I have read at least twice and some even more than that.
A sweet romance of two loveable characters Abby and Kipp. And a plethora of her unlikely and unlike-able relatives. Served with portions of steamy sex.
