Colin Brake is an English television writer and script editor best known for his work for the BBC on programs such as Bugs and EastEnders. He has also written spin-offs from the BBC series Doctor Who. He currently lives and works in Leicester.
Brake began working on EastEnders in 1985 as a writer and script editor, being partly responsible for the introduction of the soap's first Asian characters Saeed and Naima Jeffery. From there, he went on to work as "script executive" on the popular Saturday night action adventure program Bugs, before moving to Channel 5 in 1997 to be "script associate" on their evening soap Family Affairs.
In the early 2000s, Brake wrote episodes of the daytime soaps Doctors and the revival of Crossroads.
Away from television, Brake had his first Doctor Who related writing published as part of Virgin Publishing's Decalog short story collection in 1996. He then had his first novel Escape Velocity published by BBC Books in February 2001 as part of their Eighth Doctor Adventures range based on the television series Doctor Who. At the time, Brake was quoted as saying how appropriate it was that he was now writing for Doctor Who, as he was briefly considered as Eric Saward's replacement as script editor on the show - a job that eventually went to Andrew Cartmel instead.
Brake followed Escape Velocity with the Past Doctor Adventure The Colony of Lies in July 2003, and then with the audio adventure Three's a Crowd from Big Finish Productions in 2005. His Tenth Doctor Adventure The Price of Paradise was released in September 2006. He has also written an audio for their Bernice Summerfield range, and a short story for their Short Trips range.
I only downloaded UNIT: The Coup. It was a freebie on Big Finish. It is a prequel to a series of UNIT audio adventures. As a taster, it was an enjoyable short story. About 20 mins or a little more. The late Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier from Doctor Who tv series) plays the retired veteran who is now known as Sir Alister Lethbridge Stewart. As a taster it was good. More adult too. On the basis of this appetiser of sci-fi stories, I'll download the next full-length story in the near future.
Silver Lining started off quite like Tomb of the Cybermen but took its own Bernice Summerfield twist by the second half. Quite the well-humoured, fast-paced romp.
UNIT: Coup is the setup for a series arc surrounding corruption within UNIT, itself. Without knowing the rest of the story, it’s an excellent, tight introduction with a satisfying conclusion, using suspense to significant effect. It’s always a pleasure to see or hear Nicholas Courtney in action.
I enjoyed both of these short adventures. the UNIT one simply because it was great to hear Nicholas Courtney, being badass and wise, to boot. And the Bernice one because the angle of her and a Cyberman cooperating is very fun. I knew of this character but haven't read/listened to any of the adventures w/ or w/o the Doc, and after listening to this I definitely wanna hear more!
"Every cloud has a... SILVER LINING" [THAT'S THE NAME OF THE THING!!!]
Silver Lining is another audio play that I listened to a while back and really didn't remember what happened in it. All I do remember was not liking it that much at all. So, here I am today and I can say that it is a lot better than I remembered. Still not great, per se, but not as bad as I remembered. First off, it's just "Tomb of the Cybermen," but slightly tweaked and has Bernice Summerfield in it. That's no fun. I swear every other Big Fibnish Cyberman Story is just another generic copy of the 60s Classic. However, this isn't even their most glaring copy which is a bit troubling. Leave Tomb alone already. Please! Oh, wait... of course, they're making a sequel...
That aside, it's an alright story. The twists are neat I guess and I like how Benny has to work with the Cybermen. It's decent by all accounts, but it still isn't great. 5.5/10.
Review for "SILVER LINING": Originally released as a free CD given away with Doctor Who Magazine #351, which was published 9 December 2004. The Cybermen are my favourite Doctor Who monster and this is a great little tale with a fun twist. Very minimalistic with just two cast members it still has great sound design and cracks along nicely. Now also available as a download via the big finish app it's a worthwhile little listen.
More of a 3.5, but I'm rounding down. The UNIT story is more of a jumping off point for further UNIT stories and isn't overly captivating on its own. The Bernice Summerfield story, on the other hand, does well with the short format and has a lot of humor as well.
Uhhh so I only listened to "Silver Lining", so this review only applies to that. It was a nice short story about Benny on an archaeological thing and ended with a bad pun.
