My edition looks a little different to this one - the cover art matches this pretty lady:
Diana F+ Sahara
Not a lot here I didn't already know in terms of Diana's history, but some of the "vingettes" are lovely, especially "Lizzie the Antique Shop Spelunker" and "Goddess of the Hunt".
Favourite quotes:
"Many people have a fault of treating people like objects, but Lizzie possesses the fault of treating objects like people. This is just the way she relates to the world." - Sarah Zucker, p103
"..armed with her fragile plastic soultrap. She had moved on from the things she knew to the things she didn't, still equipped with her keen eye for story and her lust to steal the world away and tuck it into her heart of hearts." - Regina Belmonte, p133
This book was included in my Lomo camera package, my first Diana camera. Having no clue about the whole thing surrounding Lomography, this was very interesting to read, and helpful, entertaining and inspiring.
This is hard to rate because the vignettes are pretty mediocre, but the interviews are great and so are the galleries. This book isn't for everyone. But if you're a writer, for instance, or a Diana beginner, it's great, especially for writers who are programmed to think visually or want to write about characters who like photography.
A great little book about the humble cult classic Diana camera. I may be biased because I've got super into Lomography lately, but this was awesome. Some of the photos weren't amazing, but that's kind of the point - it showcases the Diana in all its unpredictable, wacky, mildly annoying glory instead of just cherry-picking the really good artsy ones.
The first two vignettes weren't great, but I quite enjoyed the last three, and I thought they were a really interesting and inspired addition to a book that could very easily have just been non-fiction. It's a shame this book is over a decade old and the Diana Vignettes website isn't a thing anymore.
Certainly a very niche book, especially considering it was only sold with the Diana F+ camera itself.
I got this book with the camera I got recently. At first, I thought it was just a book filled with pictures. For obvious reasons. I was pleasantly surprised to find short stories and information and history about the camera itself.
The whole thing was very creative. It was a quick read for me. The stories were amazing. The information about the camera was super informative and attention grabbing. The pictures were great as well. I loved to see and read every single page.
I fully recommend this book and anything related to Lomography. It seems to be a fun and interesting way to do photography. It may have not been something I would have went out of my way to read, but I'm still glad I read it!
Fun book for Diana-devotees. Most of the pics are pretty dull, but the Detrich collection is enjoyable, and the history of the Diana camera is well told.
How did I get this book ? I was in a second hand book's shop in Tel Aviv, searching some interesting book and found it. At the beginning I supposed that it was about a single photographer named Diana, jej. I knew about the Holga, and watched some lomographic photographs, and I really liked it, but I didn't know there was a complete style about it. Well, after reading this book, and watching the magical pics, I couldn't less than fall in love with Diana. I'm even want to start my own collection !!! For now, I'll buy some Holga lens, and photograph everything around me.
So, it is a very good book for entering you into the Diana's world.
I received this photography book for Christmas as part of the box set that came with a camera I had been coveting for purposes of play. I enjoyed reading the book and the stories within. It’s very likely that I’ll seek out some of the other volumes from which this book is a small part. I especially enjoyed the portion of the book where a short story was written to correspond with photographs or vice versa: where photos were submitted to supplement a posted short story.
It's a nice book, with short stories, interviews, pictures(a lot of them!) and everything you need to know about the Diana camera. I think adding short stories into a camera book is a brilliant idea, even though the short stories are really short and not well-written.
Lots of awesome writing in here. If only I could use adjectives so awesomely :) My favorite short stories are: Time for a Walk, The Goddess of the Hunt, and Manny Royo vs. The Undead. I also adore The Detrich Collection because how could you not?
The short stories in here are pretty crappy (if this book only consisted of the stories, I would only give it one star), but the interviews, history, and photos make it worthwhile.
A really great introduction to the Diana camera universe. Informative, entertaining, and quirky - it embodies the spirit of the lo-fi, retro photography movement embraced by Diana users everywhere.
Really fascinating insight into the camera and its origins, some really nice quirky short stories, and some fab interviews ... and that's before we get even mention all the pics, inspirational!
