David Abraham Adler is an American children's author. He was born in New York City, New York in 1947. He graduated from Queens College in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and education. For the next nine years, he worked as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Board of Education, while taking classes towards a master's degree in marketing, a degree he was awarded by New York University in 1971. In that same year, a question from his then-three-year-old nephew inspired Adler to write his first story, A Little at a Time, subsequently published by Random House in 1976. Adler's next project, a series of math books, drew on his experience as a math teacher. In 1977, he created his most famous character, Cam Jansen, originally featured in Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds, which was published that year.
Adler married psychologist Renee Hamada in 1973, and their first child, Michael, was born in 1977. By that time Adler had taken a break from teaching and, while his wife continued her work, he stayed home, took care of Michael, and began a full-time writing career.
Adler's son, Michael S. Adler, is now the co-author of several books with his father, including A Picture Book of Sam Adams, A Picture Book of John Hancock, and A Picture Book of James and Dolly Madison. Another son, Edward, was the inspiration for Adler's Andy Russell series, with the events described in the series loosely based on adventures the Adler family had with Edward's enthusiasm and his pets.
As of November 2008, Adler has three sons and two grandsons. He lives in Woodmere, New York.
Another installation in the series of Bones stories, this birthday mystery is just as much fun as the others. This time it is a special birthday gift for Bones' grandfather that has gone missing, and Bones has to solve the mystery and find out what happened to the gift so everyone can sing "Happy Birthday." He does, of course, and the whole family celebrates. In the hands of the clever young sleuth, the mystery is a piece of cake (pun absolutely intended), but the simplicity doesn't detract from the fun of the story. As in the other Bones books, the illustrations are engaging, and the fact that most of them share the page with text helps to integrate them into the reading experience. A fun read for grades K-2, highly recommended.

Adler uses bright cheerful illustrations and a lot of white space. Half the page is text while the other half is a illustration. There are words that are repeated but they are also more challengeing words. There is a lot of dialouge in the text. Children will love the excitement that is behind making a cake and finding the lost birthday card.

Bones and the Birthday Mystery is written by David Adler, and illustrated by Barbara Johansen Newman, it is a story about a young boy named Jeffery who loves to solve mysteries! One day, on his grandpas birthday they were baking him a cake, Jeffrey’s job was to put the icing on it. As he was putting the icing on the cake, he snuck a few licks and it was very sticky! His mom gave him a birthday card to give to his grandpa. After the cake was finished they all packed up to drive to their grandpa’s house, but when they go there they realized the birthday card was missing. That’s when Jeffery had to get his detective gear out to solve this mystery! They looked all over grandpas and it was nowhere to be found so they went back to Jeffrey’s house and still couldn’t find it. Then Jeffrey remembered that the icing was really sticky, and that it must be stuck to the bottom of the cake pan and the mystery was solved!
This book is set up like a chapter book so little kids who are beginners sat reading can improve, with small pictures on each page that are not surrounded by a border since this book is set up like am easy chapter book. The pictures in the book go along with the story that is being told, and the pictures look they were partly computerized.
I think this is q perfect book for young readers to help them think critically about things just like Jeffrey had to when he was looking for the birthday card!
This is a fun mystery in the Bones Mysteries series by David A. Adler and Barbara Johansen Newman. These mysteries are good for the beginning reader who is ready for chapter books. We enjoyed reading about Jeffrey's Grandfather's birthday party. We've finished this series, so now we need to finish the Cam Jansen and the Young Cam Jansen series, too.

Jeffrey Bones is an amateur detective (at ten!) who has to figure out what happened with his Grampa's birthday card. Solving it will be the icing on the cake! (Insert big groan here.)
Cute early chapter book mystery. My kids used to love series, and this one would have been a favorite along side the Pee Wee Scout books on our shelves.
