Crossing the Danger Water: Three Hundred Years of African-American Writing

Rate this book
The most comprehensive collection of writing by and about African-Americans ever to appear in one volume

Never before has such an impressive and far-reaching mix of writings by African-Americans been gathered together into a single anthology. Combining an extensive selection of poetry, prose, speeches, songs, documents, and letters dating from the pre-Colonial era through today's best and most well-known writers, this anthology offers a testament to the pervasive influence of African-Americans on the political, creative, and cultural development of the United States, even well before its inception.

This is a wonderful and comprehensive introduction, and a great reference for African American history. I would suggest it as a must-own for any student of, or individual interested in, African-American history. Why is this such a great anthology? Because it includes everything, all kinds of sources - "This anthology represents an attempt to bring together writings - meant in the largest sense to include fiction, autobiography, poetry, letters, journalism, songs, court decisions, documents, and manifestos - that reflect the African American experience of the last three centuries."

Awesome!!! A must have on the bookshelf of any reader who has even a casual interest in African American literature. A compendium that contains samples (but entire stories, articles, poems, etc., not snippets) of writings that whet the appetite.

A fantastic read! A lot of pages, a lot of days to read this book, but well worth it! It has opened my eyes wider to wonder in some many ways that are undescribeable. So many of these writer did cross the danger waters and made it to the other side. I would recommend this book to anyone!

This book, collection of historical writings, was first introduced to me by Mr. William E. Young. This book walks us through African-American history. A great book to have on the book shelf.
