I calculated the total rating from the individual ratings you’ll find below. Total average was 2.83 stars, which was rounded up to 3 stars. Because it’s so much fun, I’ve calculated the average for each sections, too, which you’ll find below each section.

I'm going to do individual ratings of these, because there's such a vast array of stories here. They're all weird as fuck, though, just so you're prepared. Also, it would make sense to write this in German, wouldn't it? Nah, I like English better. I'm not translating the titles, though.

Die schönsten Märchen aus Westeuropa :

Der gestiefelte Kater (Charles Perrault): 3 stars. The guy wanted to eat the cat. And for some reason people are afraid of a cat. Oh, and there’s a cannibal, too. The more you know.

3 Wünsche (Johann Peter Hebel): 4 stars. Can’t argue with that moral.

Der Zauberlehrling (Joseph Jacobs): 2 stars. That was just dumb and badly plotted.

Die Schöne und das Tier (Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont): 3 stars. I do like it, but the beast constantly asking the girl to marry him seems a bit manipulative. Also, the sisters are freaking horrible.

Seltsamer Spazierritt (Johann Peter Hebel): 2 stars.

Scarpafico (Giovanni Francesco Straparola): 1.5 stars. Well, that was just ridiculous from start to finish. And what the hell kind of moral is that?

Die Geschichte von den 3 kleinen Schweinchen (Joseph Jacobs): 3 stars. So, apparently, the “smart” pig’s siblings die. I thought they fled to their brothers supposedly superior house, but no. And the pig eats the wolf. What the hell? By the way, you can actually build durable houses made of straw, so suck it, Joseph Jacobs.

Kannitverstan (Johann Peter Hebel): 1.5 stars. How fucking dumb can you be?

Der Wettlauf zwischen dem Hasen und dem Igel (Ludwig Beckstein): 1.5 stars. Their bet is about booze. That is fucking hilarious. Less hilarious are the incredibly misogynistic remarks. The rating would be higher if it weren’t for those.

Der kleine Däumling (Charles Perrault): 2 stars. Am I to assume that the Ogre just melted or something?

Der Wacholderbaum (Ludwig Beckstein): 4 stars. Perhaps not for children, but pretty awesome otherwise.

Jack und die Bohnenranke (Joseph Jacobs): 3 stars. Meh.

Die schönsten Märchen aus Osteuropa :

Blaubart (Charles Perrault): 4 stars. Pretty cool.

Der Türke, der Italiener und der Armenier (Griechisches Volksmärchen): 4 stars. Approved.

Jelena, die Weise (Aleksander Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew): 1.5 stars. Would have been 4 or 5 if she hadn’t ended up marrying her creepy stalker.

Stojscha und Mladen (Serbokroatisches Volksmärchen): 3 stars. Apparently, dragons aren’t fireproof. Who knew.

Von der Schafhirtin, die Zarin wurde (Bulgarisches Volksmärchen): 4.5 stars. I can live with that.

Der Sack mit der Pest (Serbokroatisches Volksmärchen): 1.5 stars. Ugh.

Das Märchen von Iwan Zarewitsch, vom Feuervogel und vom grauen Wolf (Aleksander Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew): 2 stars. There isn’t even a usable moral here. The Wolf does all the work.

Babajaga und Wassilissa die Wunderschöne (Aleksander Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew): 3 stars. I don’t like creepy puppets.

Von dem Bauern, der gewandt zu lügen verstand (Russisches Volksmärchen): 3 stars. What?

Die weiße Ente (Aleksander Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew): 2 stars. Of course the guy wouldn’t recognise the swap.

Der unsterbliche Kotschei (Aleksander Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew): 3 stars. Meh.

Väterchen Frost (Aleksander Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew): 3 stars. Right. Okay.

Richter Schamjak (Aleksander Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew): 2 stars. Weird non-existent moral again.

Die schönsten Märchen der Brüder Grimm :

Rapunzel: 3.5 stars. Tangled is so much better.

König Drosselbart: 2 or 4 stars. I can’t decide if this is a tale warning against pride and being obnoxious in general (in which case 4 stars), or showing you a way to “subdue” your wife (in which case 2 stars).

Allerleirauh: 3.5 stars. I’m not entirely sure if she ended up marrying her father or a different king.

Tischchlein deck dich: 3 stars. There’s nothing majorly wrong with this one, I just don’t particularly like it.

Schneewittchen: 4 stars. Snow White is very naive, but she’s 7 to 14, so you can’t really blame her.

Der Wolf und die sieben jungen Geißlein: 3 stars. Poor wolf.

Vom Fischer und seiner Frau: 3 stars. I don’t think I fully understand the ending.

Rotkäppchen: 3.5 stars. Always with the wolves, man.

Hans im Glück: 4 stars. I’m kinda torn about this one. On the one hand, I like the message of not being too weighed down and dependent on your possessions. On the other hand, we live in an extremely materialistic world. Also, Hans and his mom are poor peasants, and everybody needs to eat. And, anyway, Hans is such an idiot, it hurts.

Aschenputtel: 4 stars. I like the versions without a fairy Godmother much better. Also, her father is an ass.

Die kluge Else: 2 stars. What the hell was that?

Dornröschen: 2 stars. This is just a series of avoidable events, tbh. That, and bad parenting. Also, what the hell happened to the kingdom in those 100 years? Did the whole thing fall asleep, or just the castle? Why did no one invade?

Das tapfere Schneiderlein: 3 stars. I do like how cunning the tailor is, but he’s also very haughty.

Frau Holle: 4 stars. I can live with that.

Rumpelstilzchen: 3 stars. Moral of this story: Don’t jump around in the forest yelling your name when that’s your only bargaining chip.

Brüderchen und Schwesterchen: 4 stars. Pretty typical fairy tale, but at least it’s not that sexist.

Der Meisterdieb: 4 stars. He may be a thief, but at least he’s smart.

Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot: 4 stars. Acceptable, as a whole.

Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten: 2 stars. Booooooooooring.

Der Froschkönig oder Der eiserne Heinrich: 3 stars. The frog is an ass. But so is the princess, so never mind.

Von einem der auszog, das Fürchten zu lernen: 3 stars. I wasn’t paying attention, but I’m too lazy to go back and listen to it again.

Hänsel und Gretel: 2 stars. Hänsel and Gretel are dumb, and their parents are horrible.

Die schönsten Märchen von Hans Christian Andersen :

Des Kaisers neue Kleider: 2 stars. I never really got this one, to be honest. It’s not a sign of intelligence to pretend to be smart. Which you could take as the moral, I guess, but still.

Das häßliche Entlein: 3 stars. A suicidal duck/swan is perhaps not the best bedtime story.

Der standhafte Zinnsoldat: 2 stars. I don’t think I much care for Andersen’s fairy tales.

Das kleine Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzchen: 4 stars. Depressing, but I kinda liked this one. Perhaps Andersen isn’t so bad, after all.

Die Nachtigall: 3 stars. I wasn’t really paying attention, and I don’t care enough to go back.

Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse: 1.5 star. Yeah, no, I don’t get Andersen.

Die kleine Meerjungfrau: 2 stars. See here.

Das Feuerzeug: 1.5 stars. Ugh.

Conclusion: I’m a little disillusioned now. I mean, I knew there was a lot of murder and death in the Grimm fairy tales, but apparently it was common in others, too. I don’t necessarily mind that, but I didn’t know there was so much sexism/misogyny. I suppose I should have known, what with how old some of these are. Anyway, from the average ratings one can deduce that I enjoyed the Grimm fairy tales the most, and Andersen’s the least. However, there wasn’t the same number of tales in each section, so who knows how accurate that is. Maybe I’ll learn to better appreciate Andersen one day.

Neben der gelungenen Auswahl besticht diese Sammlung vor allen Dingen durch die schönen und druckgraphisch gut gemachten Illustrationen.

All fairy tales are worth at least 4 stars, but the illustrations made me give it 5 stars (actually I wanted to give it around 4.6 stars). Some stories are well known princess tales and others are extraordinary tales that contain a lot of weirdness. I loved all of them! Most of them had a great length to use as a bedtime story!
I would recommend this edition for everyone who's searching for a book with fairy tales or collects them! :)
