Will the Real Me Please Stand Up? 25 Guidelines for Good Communication

Rate this book
This powerful study in human growth explores communication as the lifeblood of every human relationship. Customer 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning how to 'be' your true self with others.., The title describes exactly what it delivers.. Helping people show their 'real' selves. I'm a Clinical Psychologist, and I recommend this to clients who struggle with social anxiety/social phobia.. but also to any clients who are struggling with low self esteem, or social insecurity at any level.. I think it's an excellent book, written simply and clearly, with straightforward suggestions to effect change, and challenge yourself to be your true self with others. 5.0 out of 5 stars Who am I? June 9, 2004 I started reading this book only a day ago, and I can already see a monumental difference in the way I am communicating with others around me... fearless and loving are two words that I can describe my feelings toward others now... and in only one day... unbelievable! Seeing as I have always been fearful and bitter toward most other people. This may be the most "perspective changing" or possibly "life changing" book I have ever read, that remains to be seen, but I am already ordering other books from John Powell. If you have been lonely, depressed, afraid to speak in front of others or voice your opionion for fear of being rejected... wait no longer...... BUY THIS BOOK NOW! YOUR LIFE IS WAITING FOR YOU! The ancient Greeks philosophy has been condensed into two words... "KNOW THYSELF."This book will help you find the real you.

John Joseph Powell (aka John Powell) was a Jesuit priest and author, and brother of Rita Donlan and William Powell.

He received elementary-school education at the John B. Murphy public school in Chicago. In June 1943, Powell graduated from the Loyola Academy in Chicago. In August 1943, he entered the Society of Jesus at Milford, Ohio. In the fall of 1947, he began a three-year course in philosophy at West Baden College, and enrolled in Loyola University, where he took a Bachelor of Arts degree the following June. He began graduate work at Loyola in 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1956.

Powell worked at West Baden University (1961-1965), the Bellarmine School of Theology of Loyola University (1965-1968) and Loyola University (1968-2001), where he became an associate professor of theology and psychology. Powell was a proponent of humanistic Catholicism and wrote many books mostly dealing with psychology and Catholic theology, and conducted spiritual retreats along with his counseling work. He later retired in Michigan and allegedly died with Alzheimer's disease.

well wow! Is it clarifying enough if I say I give 7 stars instead of 5 to this book??!

Wow! I am breathless, speechless and so happy with such a book! If I would have ever written anything it would have been this book! Actually this Author's books are all amazing but this one in English : Will the real me please stand up? and his other book happiness is an inside job were just too amazing! yet I have his other books as well that till now I don't know how strong they are yet!

This book basically talks about the art of communication: with yourself and with others.
It covers all the areas I have ever wondered about, in every single page I find a new, effective, basic, logical, applicable info! well maybe 2 or 3 BIG infos in one single page!

At the start you will doubt most of the things (though they are not knowledge or science from outer space! You most probably have heard that some things are GOOD others not all your life)but I will say it again : NO OTHER WAY FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION THAN THIS!

As I said it covers all the aspects you need, so I really recommend you all to read this book and even study it and come back to it from time to time....there would be some obstacles for some people who:

1. Read in a shallow way.
2. Have very little 'experience' in communication in ppl.
3. ppl not giving a good deal of importance for communication in their life and do not know it's effectiveness.
4. People who are not experienced in being honest with THEMSELVES.

Though each of those will get the absolute benefit if they really want to.
Lastly so sorry for this review I am writing it while I extremely sleepy so forgive me for any shortcomings and have a nice journey going through the pages of this very important book :)

And as usual I have to do this which is thanking the Author for what he offered us: Thank You John Joseph Powell...

Peace

I borrowed this book from Sean in hopes of understanding more about good communication. As a communication graduate, some of the ideas reminded me of what we studied in college! It was nice to read it in Christian context as well! I believe this was the first book that made me write down quotable quotes (exactly 92 of them) in my notebook because I only borrowed it.

Good points, crucially the book tells you how to listen better. The questions to ask the speaker to gain more understand and how it is important to refrain from judgement and advice giving (in many situations) and of course to avoid interrupting, changing the subject etc...

Bad points - who wants to go around sharing their feelings all the time? Sometimes our feelings are wrong, immature and we need to grow up and put things in perspective. Our boss may have upset us but we have heat, food and water and aren't in Syria or the middle of WWII so what good will it do for us to go around sharing our feelings and is it fair to burden others with such petty matters?

The tools are useful in frank 1-2-1 discussions with close friends, family, therapists and perhaps long term colleagues if a situation has arisen otherwise I disagree with the central premise that we need to be sharing our feelings all the time. I prefer a more stoic approach in line with the poem IF.

This book was so refreshing and eye-opening to read. It talks a lot about the barriers we use when talking to others, the masks to hide our real selves, and how to remove them to better communication. How to be a better listener and how to learn to share your feelings with others. I learned a lot and realized a lot of things about myself. Definitely a 5 star read! Would recommend this to everybody!
