Are you as clever as a fox? Or perhaps you're as sharp as any spike? If so, this book will be a piece of cake! Clever rhymes from Brian P. Cleary and humorous illustrations from Brian Gable present similes and metaphors. When it comes to grammar, this team is not as slow as thick molasses. Oh no, they're as bright as polished pennies! Each simile and metaphor is printed in color for easy identification in this gem of a book. Read it aloud and share in the delight of the sense―and nonsense―of words.
I thought this was going to be more of a story, with a plot and characters, but it’s really more of an informative text. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not as fun as I thought it would be. That’s my fault though. As an informational text, it’s very entertaining and I’m sure it’s very useful. Similes and metaphors can be a hard thing for a child to get their mind around, so it’s great to have fun and to the point books like this with easy to understand language and pictures to really cement the knowledge.
I read this book in my YA lit class, and I saw it mostly as a joke and something I could read really quickly, but I was pleasantly surprised. I think it definitely has a place in an English classroom for helping students understand simile and metaphor. The really cheesy rhymes make it easy to remember the lessons taught, and it sure beats doing worksheets.
This would be a great book to read to children to teach them the difference between similes and metaphors. This book not only gives examples of each of them but also gives a definition of them. I think that children will be engaged in this book because of the illustrations. I thought that the use of bright colors in the illustrations was fun.
As with all the others in this series, I got these to share with my children as a fun and cute way to discuss language and have not been disappointed. They are cute and engaging for kids.
This author is amazing in teaching English in a fun manner. I'm still trying to learn who the animals and creatures in the illustrations. How interesting to learn that similes and metal are used in daily advertisements
This is another fun book in the Words are CATegorical series by Brian P. Cleary and Brian Gable. It offers a very simple and interesting way to describe the difference between similes and metaphors. I like that the book doesn't try to do too much and sticks to the one topic. The similes and metaphors are often commonly-used phrases, but combined with the cartoonish illustrations, they are funny and fresh. The narrative rhymes and our girls thought it was funny. I'm not sure if our girls will retain what they've learned, but it's a great introduction. We really enjoyed reading this book together.
This book does its job--clearly explaining these forms of comparison to kids and differentiating between them. The examples are silly as are the illustrations. They won't be the first books kids go for, but when used to teach, these are going to be fairly popular.
I'm getting pickier about my nonfiction... Part of Cleary's "Words are CATegorical" series. Good for teaching similes and metaphors. The similes all work well; it's the metaphors I might need to explore a little more. Good for the concept introduction.
