The newest paranormal romance in the national bestselling Broken Heart series
Everybody makes mistakes-and my first one was named Connor, a heart- stealing Scottish hottie. I thought our night together was the beautiful beginning to a love story, which turned out to be my second mistake. I, Phoebe Allen, lifelong Broken Heart resident and vampire, am now mated to a half-demon.
Thankfully Phoebe's four-year-old son Danny is safely away at Disneyworld with his human father. Because Phoebe's right in the middle of major paranormal drama, helping Connor and his rag-tag group of friends retrieve part of an ancient talisman in order to ward off Connor's vicious stepmother, an uber-demon named Lilith. Phoebe swears she isn't falling for any of Connor's demon charm. But still, he's willing to do anything to protect her and prevent demons from storming into Broken Heart. And her undead heart can't resist a bad boy with identity issues...
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Michele Bardsley writes humorous paranormal romances and funny paranormal mysteries. Michele likes to write, read, crochet hats, drink wine, and eat chocolate!
Michele Bardsley's Broken Heart, OK series is always a fun read for me. They are all full of wacky romances and drama of some sort. Broken Heart's single parents were attacked one night by a tainted vampire. The books in the series each tell a story of a particular mom/dad and their struggles adjusting to their new vamp life, being a parent in their "new" town and finding their mate.
In Come Hell or High Water we get to know more about Phoebe Allen and her Scottish hottie, Connor. {LOVE the brouge!}
Parts of this book had me gigglin' to myself. Esp when she meets Dude, Connor's hellhound, a Chihuahua. "Hellhounds choose their forms and their masters." Dude eats demons and helps look after the two while they're in hell.
Overall, not my favorite of the series, but it offered, for me, what this series never fails to do ... make me smile and provide a quick, light, funny, vamp romance.
Just finished reading Come Hell or High Water (Broken Heart, OK, Book 6) by Michele Bardsley which I give 3 stars. The Broken Heart series is about a group of single parents in the town of Broken Heart, Oklahoma who all get attacked one night and are turned into vampires. Each book is about a different one of the so-called "Turn Bloods". They're paranormal romances because of the HEA at the end of each book, but the series itself also has a story arc.
Come Hell or High Water features Phoebe Allen, mother of four-year-old, Danny and member of the vampire family whose powers include a certain amount of control over demons. Phoebe impetuously mates herself to a Scottish hunk named Connor, who turns out to be half-demon and suddenly finds herself in the middle of a quest to locate an ancient talisman and perform a ritual to banish Lilith, a super-demon, back to Hell.
I've always enjoyed the books from this series, but sadly, I find myself less engaged with each new book. :-( They're a fairly quick, light read with lots of humor and a bit of excitement & danger mixed in, but there are some plot holes and consistency mistakes here and there that bother me (and I'm the type of person who usually doesn't notice these things).
For instance: in Come Hell or High Water we're told that Phoebe is the last female vampire of the Durga family line. However, in the glossary of the Broken Heart Turn-Bloods it clearly says that Darlene Clark (whose book I assume we'll see down the line somewhere) is also a member of family Durga. We're also given some information in the glossary about Turn-Blood, Elizabeth Bretton nee Silverstone. She's supposed to be separated from her first husband, Carlton, and has a seventeen year old daughter named Venice who lives with Carlton in LA. However, in the teaser for the next book - Elizabeth's book - it says that her husband is Henry and that Venice is his daughter by another women, and therefore Elizabeth's step-daughter. In the same teaser there's a mention of 18-year old Marybeth Beauchamp, another Turn-Blood that the glossary has listed as being 19 years old.
See what I mean?
Regardless, I'll probably buy the next book because they're a nice entertaining break from heavier reading, but I'm hoping they edit the glossary next time around. . .
Phoebe Allen has the the worse luck with falling in love. She thought she found her true love being married to a human, but that soon failed. She has everything she needs, or so she thought, until she hires a sexy Scottish cook for her restaurant. One evening, she decides, out of no where, to invite him home for a little hanky panky and ends up mating with him. He tells her after, that she has just committed a mating ritual to a half demon. -Say WHAT??
Now, in a strange twist of fate, Phoebe finds herself married to a demon named Connor, who happened to be of the same demon kind that she kills for living! Did I mention that she "has the the worse luck with falling in love?"
How can she live with Connor and be happy when he tricked her into mating with him? If that's not bad enough, she finds out that her son is in danger while in Disney Land with his human father. Oh wait, it gets better.. Phoebe also soon finds out that she is the last female vampire of her kind, and is being hunted by a crazy goddess named Lilith, who just happens to be her demon husbands stepmother! Phoebe's life has turned completely upside down. Poor Phoebe. Will things finally look up for her, and will she accept Connor for what he really is, even if he is a demon?
I have wanted to read Michele Bardsley books for quite sometime now, and I finally got the opportunity. Right from the first page I was hooked. It wasn't but a few pages in that I knew that this was going to be an awesome book. I absolutely loved the humor in the book, I laughed all the way through it. I also loved the character Phoebe, she lights up the pages with her sarcasm. Fantastic is I all I can say about this book, I loved every minute of it and I can't wait to read another book of Michele Bardsley.
5 Bats out of 5 Reviewed by Raven Kelly- Webmistress of VampireBooks.ca
Since the first book in this series, I fell in love with Broken Heart. Different from most paranormal romances, Bardsley focus is in the humor of it all. The whole concept of the series is already hilarious: small town single parents turned into vampires by accident. Each book focus on one of these turn-bloods (as these vampires are called) and we follow their struggle to take care of their children, keep their normal lives (only with a different schedule, running from sunlight) and, as if that wasn't challenging enough, they have to deal with new found love in the middle of (un)life-threatening crisis.
This sixth installment brings Phoebe's story. She's the mother to a four-year-old, runs the town diner, functions as Broken Heart's demon-hunter in her spare time and never really fell in love. In a very impulsive decision, she takes Connor home for the night uh..in her case, day. He's this sexy Ghillie-Dhu (scottish fairy) who neglected to mention he's also half-demon. Now she's mated to him for the next century and his step-mom, a full-blooded super-strong demon who's not Phoebe's fan, will do anything to get out of hell.
Phoebe is built in a way that's almost too real. She gets scared, she acts selfishly, she does stupid things and she's really impulsive. She regrets many of her actions one second after doing it. I can totally relate. Connor, on the other hand, is Mr. Perfect - if you can ignore he's a demon. His patience is never ending, he's protective and extremely charming. Not to mention, I do have a thing for characters with scottish accents. What else can a girl want?
Bardsley writes from Phoebe's perspective and the whole book seems like a friend telling you a story, it's really captivating and I couldn't put it down.
The only reason this is not a five-star review is because I felt this one got a little confusing with the amount of characters. Some parts I had to ask myself: wait, who's that? Also, I felt that the structure in Broken Heart is changing a lot and leading to a more serious universe. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I hope it doesn't jeopardize the humorous essence of the series. I'll be waiting for the next one.
Come Hell or High Water is the sixth book of Broken Heart Vamp. It tells the story of one of the 11 newly-turned single mom vampires. The lead in here is Phoebe, a vampire who has the power to control demon and Connor, a half demon half something.
I thing i love about this series is how our author manages to creat kick-ass plot where every heroine becomes important to either paranormal world or the the town. I mean, i have met dragons, queens, and etc. Now our lead got accidentally involved with a demon.
So prophecy, prophecy, a lot of actions, some drama, bad-ass powers :) *grin*, and some HAWT stuff which is always guaranteed! yay!
Anyway our heroine is not neccesarily bad. She is real ya know? selfish, a complainer sometimes, can be a real coward and i pain in the ass, sometimes i just wanna slap some sense into her!
But she is human, er, at heart and i understand her fears too. I just adore this series, probably one of my fave series since im looking forward to book 7!
I liked the first few books of this series better. The author has gotten into too much of the back story and that detracts from the romance angle of the book and also burdens the story. This series is getting very convuluted and I'm not s ure I'll continue to read it.
And her undead heart can't resist a bad boy with identity issues..
Heather's Notes I didn't pratically care for Phoebe. I got really annoyed with her throughout the book and that made it hard for me to really like the book. Also it seems to have skipped several years and it made the story feel fractured. It didn't have the humor that usually makes these books so enjoyable. I will probably read the next one but I am not looking forward to it as much as I would like to be.
This was an okay book. At my age, I could have done without the sex scenes (and I probably would have given it 4 or 5 stars if the sex hadn't been written porn). However, the plot was good and the characters well-written. I had read one of the other books in this series years ago (I'm the Vampire That's Why). It appears this series isn't about just one main character and her true love but instead, each book features a different couple.
This book centered around a female vampire named Phoebe and her half-demon half-Irish Fairy Connor. Along the way, Phoebe becomes involved in a prophecy and her unlife takes a turn she never expected. To be honest, though, I liked some of the non-main characters better than I did Phoebe.
It was an entertaining book which is why I gave it 3 stars. I may buy some of the other books and hopefully the stories will have more plot and characterization and less porn. :)
The romance between the two wasn't all that great. Conner seemed a bit too emo for my liking. I did, as usual, enjoy the WTF Bardsley has going on for this series and its paranormal world.I so enjoy how it's a mash-up of a lot of different and familiar mythologies and beliefs. Nice amount of humor and seriousness to it all. It also kept me guessing, for the most part, about how the story would roll.
The concept and characters are really cute and held a lot of potential. Everything just moved a bit too quickly to really sink in, even for a light and silly paranormal romance. I didn't have a clear concept of who Connor really was, and I struggled to like him for most of the book.
not typical book I read I really like fantasy ,sci Fi depend on myood ,but they are usually on a more serious note. This book light hearted ,funny .basically human turned vampire but instead of giving up when life knocks u on u ass u get up & kick some but in a funny way .She has a side kick that has some bad ass powers that she's half in love with that helps her out of some jams. .so if u have shitty stressful week this is the book that's just entertaining enough to keep u interest & make u smirk
Review I was very much looking forward to reading COME HELL OR HIGH WATER by Michele Bardsley. It is the newest novel in the BROKEN HEART series that she writes. Each novel focuses on another inhabitant of the small town, Broken Heart, Oklahoma. It's a town where single parents thrive and a large amount of those parents were turned into vampires, on the same night, by a vicious attack.
COME HELL OR HIGH WATER focuses on Phoebe Allen and Conner Ballard. Their romance begins right away, with a midnight tryst. When all is said and done, Phoebe finds herself mated to a half-demon. Finding about his status isn't as hurtful as finding out that Conner lied to her, and seduced her for a specific purpose.
But, there's no stopping the path that she is now on. It seems that Phoebe might be the only person who can help Conner stop the destruction that evil demon Lilith, is bent on wreaking. Tagging along on the journey is Jennifer and Scrymgeour, Conner's sister and his hellhound. Along the way, they acquire the help of a prophet, Astria Vedere. Thus ensues a little hilarity, a little more romance, and demon fighting galore.
In all of the other books, it is clear that the Consortium is protecting the newly turned vampires of Broken Heart. In fact, they dispatched their own members to 'turn' the victims of an attack, who would have died otherwise. Then they helped the rest of the town adapt to nighttime living, as well as erecting a forcefield that keeps Broken Heart's secret hidden. But, Bardsley shows a different side to the Consortium, in this book. Phoebe is left in doubt of their honesty when she discovers that there is a lost Vampire Family, that has never been mentioned. This secondary plot, along with the prophesy of Astria, Phoebe's uncertainty about Conner, and the battle with Lilith kept me engrossed to the last page. 4/5 for plot
The premise of a whole town full of single parents struck me as very unique in a novel, when I read the first in the series, I'M THE VAMPIRE, THAT'S WHY. In this book, Bardsley does a great job of expressing the dilemma in which Phoebe finds herself. On the one hand, she loves her son very much. But, there is a niggling doubt about whether living in a town of vampires is really in his best interest. Conner turns out to be more than just a demon with an agenda. Of course, he did deliberately make Phoebe his mate. However, his motivations are not selfish, and it is clear that he has feelings for her. 3.5/5 for characters
There are a few Scottish endearments in the book. Several of the Ancients and Conner's hellhound have unusual names. But, as I am familiar with the series, I've already come up with my own ideas on how the names should be pronounced, and I didn't feel as if it detracted from the book. The pace of my reading was never awkward, and overall the language flows well. 3.5/5 for language
Bonus Cover Points: 4.5/5 The cover of COME HELL OR HIGH WATER was similar to that of the others in the series. For, a paranormal romance, I thought that it avoided any cliches fairly well. There was no embracing couple or man chest. Bardsley's covers have always been slightly off-beat, echoing the tone of her books. These are no stock photos; the cover are drawings, not pictures.
Final Call: 11/15 Recommend

I have enjoyed this series quite a bit over the past year and a bit, but I have to be 100% honest when I say I didn’t overly enjoy this particular book.
Phoebe isn’t one to act on impulse, but after bedding the hunky Scottish help from work, she finds herself mated for 100 years to a half demon who seems to be keep one too many secrets from her. The two then take us on a journey to the underworld and beyond, introducing the readers to a whole new variety of characters and creatures who all find their own nook in this great series.
I really enjoyed the character or Connor, who was mysterious, dangerous and had the sexiest accent ever. He was so sweet at times, whilst other times he left you tingling with anticipation as his demon half came forward. He came entangled with a brand new group of characters who were so captivating and entertaining.
While the story of Connor and Phoebe was quite different from previous stories in this series, especially with them mating within the first few pages and the introduction of the demon world into the series, I found that it lacked the usual BOOM that the books in the series brings along with them. I think the biggest disappointment was that it seemed to be loosely held together with a string of sexual encounters that, while well written, seemed rather forced and dull at times. I felt that that was the main focus of this one novel and it just didn’t suit the rest of the series all that well.
I found Phoebe to be rather whiny at times two, making me thing I was reading a YA book filled with a lot of angst. Usually this wouldn;t have bothered me so much, but this has always been a series that has been a light, fluffy and happy read for me, and so the sudden change in book and expectations was a small let down.
In all, the book tied well with the series when it came to characters and plot, but I found a few of its own personal characteristics to be rather disappointing and lacking in areas. 3 out of 5 for this book, and I liked it but I don’t see myself reading this again.
As much as I like this series. There's been some blunders in the plot in some of them. I did like this one, but I found the female lead Phoebe irritating and extremely self-centered and disliked her "poor me" attitude. She was very impulsive when it came to her attraction to Connor at first. She's been a vampire for awhile and KNOWS when you have unprotected sex with ANYONE that it bonds you for 100 years. I understand heat of the moment and to be fair he did kinda tell her since he was "other" it wouldnt take. Sort of a white lie there buddy! Still...she should have paused and thought for a minute. lol. She constantly goes on about how she loves her 4 year old son Danny and wants what best for him. She basically uses him as a crutch for a lot of things...mainly when she doesnt wanna face things like a woman! Then she gets all melancholy when she starts to see herself as an idiot and selfish..especially when it comes to Danny then opts to leave him with his dad permanently he's better off. Pity party anyone? Now, we dont see a lick of him in the whole book. Yes, he's with his father in Florida but I kinda thought we should have seen him and gotten to know the little guy. Connor...what he does to her isn't cool. He involves her in some scary stuff. Well...honestly she would have been in it anyways because its a prophecy. Connor's kept things from her and lied a few times. I get she's pissed at him but she cant stay away. What I did like about the book was that it wasnt necessarily always set in Broken Heart...but sometimes hell or other places. Made it kinda interesting. Dont get me wrong I might complain a lot about the characters but I liked the book and Phoebe DOES pull her head out of her butt eventually. I found Connor to be sweet even if he went about things a bit wrongly. He genuinely liked and cared for Phoebe even before sleeping with her. He grew fast to love though before she did. :) I recommend.
The Setting -- has a bit more variety to it this time than just Broken Heart, Oklahoma. The vistas of Hell and Tulsa – totally different settings I swear – are visited. It’s still the same quirky places we know from the other books, but with a bit more variety considering Connor’s demonic upbringing.
The Characters -- are always a treat. Phoebe resonates with that urge any girl has to just throw caution to the wind, except you gotta remember the consequences; if you’re sixteen and breaking a rule, or if you’re a 25 year old vampire doing the “horizontal bop” with someone you think you know. I continue to like the various character struggles in the Broken Heart books. Phoebe struggles with decisions about her son and his future, Connor has not only Phoebe to worry about – but other people who may die because of his choices, and other characters who may only be supporting the stars but are no less real and charming.
The Plot -- is charming – probably one of my favorite Broken Heart books! Okay, at least until Must Love Lycans come out… I liked how the normal progression of the romance was sped up in this one and how it dealt with consequences and choices. Yes, I’m finding moral points in the book – it’s not anything to hang your hat on, but I liked how the romance was wound around facing the consequences of a spur of the moment decision and the characters took their choices seriously. As always, it’s quirky, it’s fun, it has me laughing and not wanting to put it down.
I’m only sad that there’s not ten more books to read after this one – like, right now!
Come Hell Or High Water by Michele Bardsley, sixth book in the Broken Heart Vampires series. Phoebe is at the centre of this latest humorous instalment, though you do get the familiar characters from the previous books in the background, so you get to keep track of them too. Phoebe has a son, Danny who is four years old. Danny is away at Disney World with his human father. Its a good job he is too, because Phoebe is in the middle of a large paranormal drama at Broken Heart, Oklahoma. she is busy helping to retrieve a piece of talisman for Connor. Connor needs the talisman piece to help ward off his awful stepmother Lilith. Lilith is of course non-human, she is in fact a demon. Phoebe is adamant that she will not fall for Connor and his charm, but of course, she does just that. Think the cover's for the books are brilliant and of course give you the idea that these are not serious books. The books are a light hearted look at the residents of Broken heart, Oklahoma, and the residents just....well....just happen to be undead!
*Again a note of warning , these books are aimed at adults so the content may not be suitable for young teens*
Phoebe is one of the single parents that was turned two years ago after Logan's spree. Since she is of family Durga her powers lie in fighting demons. Her life was normal, as much as the life of a vampire can be. But then she slept with Connor. Now, not only is she married to him, but he's a half demon who needs her help to save the world from demons.
Connor spent his entire life fighting to be good, trying to resist his demon side. Of course that doesn't stop everyone from assuming the worst of him. The prophecy wasn't the only reason he married Phoebe, the much important was the fact that he was told that Phoebe was going to love him.
Connor was great, I love heroes that are dark, tortured, but Phoebe was extremely irritating. She is selfish, stupid and incredibly annoying.
The plot itself didn't draw my attention, and too many things were happening at the same time. And the "big battle" was anticlimactic after all the drama leading up to it.
I love these books. They are easy to read and a lot of fun. I feel like I need to take a trip and stumble upon Broken Heart myself so I can be a part of this cool community. I will even take the everyday horror and perilous situations they are always in. This is book number 6 so it may be safe to assume there are at least 5 more books to come since there are 11 Broken Heart Turn Bloods. In this book Phoebe, one of the only demon hunter vampire's in Broken Heart, hooks up with Connor. This is a huge deal since doing the deed ensures a hundred year mating. So when she find out Connor is actually half demon and he mated with her to save her life she is both horrified and touched. He needs her help in keeping his step-mother Lilith (which from Buffy and Supernatural we know is a big baddie) trapped in Hell. While their connection is a little more one sided in the beginning the attraction is there to make them together hot hot hot. Another great read and I look forward to the next book!
Everybody makes mistakes-and my first one was named Connor, a heart- stealing Scottish hottie. I thought our night together was the beautiful beginning to a love story, which turned out to be my second mistake. This series is a guilty pleasure for me. It's pretty much a run-of-the-mill paranormal romance series with some crazy kooky urban fantasy action thrown in. The tone is heavy on we-were-meant-for-each-other romance, but with a light, sassy feel to it. There's also a no-nonsense vibe that appeals to me. The setup is ridiculous (a bunch of single parents in Broken Heart, Oklahoma were simultaneously turned into vampires), and there are legions of supernatural characters thrown together, but somehow it works for me. Maybe because the action is so quick-paced.
This is the 6th book in the series. It features Phoebe, a demon-wrangling vampire and single mom of a 4 year old who's on vacation with his dad in Florida, falling in love with Connor, a half fairy/half demon. There's also some trouble with locking up a nasty mean villainous demon (Lilith) forever.
Phoebe Allen is one of the Broken Heart Turn-bloods, running a diner and raising her four-year-old son. Tricked into mating with Connor, a half-demon, Phoebe soon finds herself in the midst of a prophecy and trying to keep a demon from breaking free of her bindings.
Another fun volume in this saga, even if certain things didn't quite make sense for me. Another vampire line is revealed (and it will be fun hunting down that Ancient) and Phoebe becomes quite powerful, with her becoming a Talisman that can break bindings. I don't remember too much about Phoebe from prior books, but she's pretty kick-ass. Connor is interesting as well as pretty devious.

I thought our night together was the beautiful beginning to a love story, which turned out to be my second mistake. I, Phoebe Allen, lifelong Broken Heart resident and vampire, am now mated to a half-demon.
The plot was fairly straight forward and I knew pretty much how it was going to end part way through the book. And none of the characters are that well developed. If you prefer the more complex, grittier plots of urban fantasy you probably won't enjoy this. However I found that it was the perfect book for a snowy day - a quick light read.
This one wasn't one of the better ones of the series, but still an enjoyable read. Phoebe somehow manages to find herself unexpectedly mated, as she tries to adjust to that fact she finds out that her new mate is a demon and the only reason he mated her was due to a prophesy. As she deals with this delightful fact she learns more about vampires and others that are out there that the consortium didn't even know. Slowly she is seeing Connor's side of things, but still isn't sure if she can trust him. With all the new knowledge Phoebe finds herself right smack in the middle of the demon war and it is up to her to find a way to end it.
Maybe a 2.5 - this was better than the last couple, so I'm glad I read it (thank you, C.!) I may continue with the series. Because it has been a while since I read one of these I had trouble remembering some of the too-many characters and some of the back story, and while these can stand alone, they make a lot more sense if you've followed the entire story arc. The colloquialisms were much worse than I remembered, and supremely irritating (to say nothing of dating the story). Funny that I can read these but have not been able to tolerate more than a single title of any of Ms. Bardsley's other series.
This is a very fun, cute paranormal romance - it is definitely mind-candy. There is no taxing themes or heavy plot lines. It's all in good fun and fine as long as you can ignore a few of those holes that crop up from time to time. (I think the author needs a continuity checker - a few were big enough to twist an ankle in…) But overall I liked the characters of Phoebe, a demon hunting vampire, and Connor, the half-demon, half-fairy, all-Scottish hunk - they played well off of each other and I loved his hellhound.
I wanted to start the new year off with some fresh vampire literature. This book is an easy read that is fun & interesting. The main character,Phoebe, a vampire...are you surprised..is emersed in paranormal drama! She has just mated herself to a Scottish demon/pixie for 100 years...& she didn't know he was demon! Now we have a ticked off vamp! Oh..& she has a kid,too...can't see how the kid plays in all this. She sleeps all day & is up all night....hello..can any one spell SCHOOL!! His father is human so we'll see!
Phoebe Allen is coerced into making love to a Scottish hottie, Connor Ballard. He told her that they would not be bound for 100 years but he lied to her. She found out after that he was on a mission to find a tailisman that will help keep the demon, Lilith, in the Pits of Hell forever.
The have quite an adventure getting the talisman and meet some interesting new people and have fun finding each other and falling in love?
