Bethenny Frankel has a knack for making healthy food taste delicious. That knack, which started out as a hobby and was enhanced with formal training, has elevated her to national prominence as a celebrated natural food chef, the creator of the phenomenal new Skinnygirl Margarita, and The New York Times best selling author of Naturally Thin.
Frankel, who calls herself a "health foodie” and attended the National Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts, focuses on sharing with others her knowledge and passion for healthy living. In addition to her monthly column in Health Magazine, she is regularly featured in national publications from The New York Times to the weekly entertainment magazines. She’s also a sought-after guest on national news and entertainment television, where she brings her expertise and irresistibly candid and funny take not only to food segments but to any conversation about living healthy and living well.
Frankel’s wit, wisdom and humor came to national attention when she was named first runner-up on NBC’s “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.” Network executives saw a personality they couldn’t ignore and put her center stage weekly on Bravo’s hit series “The Real Housewives of New York,” now in its third season. Though technically not a “wife,” she has emerged as the star of the series, with a huge network of fans, a job as national spokesperson for Pepperidge Farm's Baked Naturals® and Deli Flats(trademark), and her own spin-off series now in production.
Naturally Thin: Unleash Your Skinnygirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting debuted this year on The New York Times Best Sellers list and stayed for an astonishing for 18 consecutive weeks. Frankel’s second book, The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life will be released January 5, 2010, just in time to support “new year, new me” resolutions with delicious, practical, effective recipes and lifestyle tweaks. Skinnygirl Dish showcases Frankel’s renowned “fix-ology” . . . her ability to take calorie-rich foods and revamp them to create healthier versions without compromising flavor.
Her skill as a fixologist applies to cocktails too . . . she has just this fall launched The Skinnygirl Margarita, a bottled, pre-mixed beverage made with clear tequila, lime juice and only a splash of citrus liqueur, which drastically reduces the calories of the traditional cocktail. All natural and lightly sweetened with agave nectar, it has only 100 calories in a full 4 oz. serving.
As the go-to blogger for all things reality and lifestyle, Frankel wields her pen like a sword, ensuring that readers will get the unvarnished truth along with common sense, expertise and a healthy – always healthy – dose of humor. She is on a mission to democratize healthy living, making information available to everyone she can reach through her appearances, books, columns and blogs.
Frankel lives in Manhattan with her dog Cookie. She will be marrying her other love, Jason Hoppy, this spring and they will welcome their first child in early summer.
I read diet books like someone who has 500 pounds to lose, not just 5! I picked this one up because I love Bethenny and she was reading it herself. Bethenny is so damn skinny, it's hard to believe she eats anything at all, but the book is full of good and practical advice. It was a quick read and I picked up a few good tips.
**not that deep I just love this woman and would listen to her read itemized receipts of Home Depot or financial statements (most boring things i could think of) if i could
I heard an interview with bethenny where she tells that she has UNLOCKED the mystery of staying thin. So I wanted to hear the secret. Turns out it’s a lot of portion control - a lot of CONTROL - and lean meats and vegetables (shocking). Also you can have anything you want - Just two bites (I’m not kidding) - more control - and then make up for your sins by eating more lean meats and vegetables. So as it turns out - there’s not secret. I mean I didn’t think there was but I wanted to hear waht she had to say. She does a really good job of rephrasing an age old tale. Limit limit limit!! Control control control!! The trick to staying naturally thin? Eat two bites of absolutely amazing food and then fill in the gap with vegetable soup, salad, lean meats, vegetables. Sigh. Back to starving myself to stay “naturally thin”. Or maybe not starving because my existence is not based on my looks and I like carbs.
While this book has good information and insights, there's way too much fluff. If I remember correctly, you could start reading in chaper 7 and not miss a thing.
I chose to listen to this audiobook at work and it nearly got me some looks from my co-workers. There were passages where I laughed out loud - couldn't help myself! As a New Yorker, I loved not only Bethenny's accent but the phrases she used that I had forgotten in my 20+ years in the Midwest. Now I know why my Nebraska friends used to look at me as a curiosity based on some of the phrases and references I used when I first moved out here.
This much aside, the content of the book was very much common sense, but it was refreshing to hear advice that wasn't faddish or "based on latest scientific research" (a.k.a pseudo-science). Bethenny told us what our grandmothers told us or what our girlfriends should tell us. I wrote down all her "rules" in my work calendar and plan to refer to them from time to time. I completely recommend this book - not just for anyone looking to lose weight, but as fun reminders as we ladies age and see extra pounds pile on out of nowhere. Additionally - as a vegan it was important to me that her "rules" applied to my diet as well. They are adaptable to everyone. Also - big plus that she's a yoga fan, too!
I read Naturally Thin 10 years or so ago. One of the few “diet” books out there that has stood the test of time. I put diet in quotes because I would say that this is more of a philosophy around food and eating than what people typically think of as diet.
This book is an adaptation of the themes in Naturally Thin reworked for audio.
She does reference fasting at some point and is fairly brief about it. There is a lot more research out there now about fasting, specifically intermittent fasting and Autophagy. I would read Gin Stephens books and/or listen to The Intermittent Fasting podcast. I’ve been IFing since April 2019. I love IF. And I think an intermittent fasting regime combined with the ideas in this book are perfect for one another.
I love that there is now an audio version of Naturally Thin. This book is great! Very reasonable, mindful eating explanations and helpful ways or “rules” to learn and keep in mind to enjoy food and not go overboard. I listened to it twice and probably will cycle through it many times.
*audio book* i really just wanted to know what her books were like bc i am watching RHONY and they are talking abt them but it was actually good with some good tips and she wasn’t promoting unhealthy habits so that’s good
